Each year, Fortune magazine comes out with its list of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For." And this year, IT companies are well-represented on the list. Four of them even made the top 10 including: No. 4, Google; No. 5, NetApp; No. 10, DreamWorks Animation and taking the #1 spot as the best company to work for is SAS. So what makes these companies so great? Host Ashley Daley breaks it down; And speaking of jobs to fill. This month, Google announced that CEO Eric Schmidt is stepping down and co-founder Larry Page is taking over as chief executive. Almost immediately, Google announced a 6,200-person hiring spree; Starting Feb. 2, Apples iPad will host a tablet-only newspaper called The Daily. The digital publication will be created by News Corp and cost readers 99 cents per week; Google has penciled in a big Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet demonstration at its Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., for Feb. 2. The new OS build, named Honeycomb has been "redesigned from the ground up" to fit the larger screens populating tablet computers; On Friday, Microsoft issued an advisory on a Windows security vulnerability after exploit code for the bug went public. The bug, which lies in the MHTML protocol handler, can be exploited to cause data leakage. Specifically, it would be similar to that of server-side cross-site-scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities, where for instance, an attacker could construct an HTML link designed to trigger a malicious script and somehow convince the targeted user to click it. The online encyclopedia first went live on Jan. 15, 2001, and is now among the Internets most visited sites even bigger than eBay; On January 12th, Apple took to New York City to announce the worst kept secret ever, that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. The smartphone will be available for pre-order on Feb 3rd and for purchase on Feb 10th. Ashley breaks down the similarities and differences of features on each carriers iPhone; Technology giant Dell announced it would consolidate its Public and Large Enterprise business units into a single organization. The company said the creation of a single Public-Large Enterprise business unit is designed to enhance Dell’s position as a provider of open, capable and affordable IT technology solutions and services; Earlier this week the company also launched the Vostro 460 tower for small businesses, the first Dell SMB desktop PC to offer Intels new “SandyBridge” quad-core processors. The 460 supports a variety of Genuine Windows 7 operating systems, has a 350W power supply and an up to 150W graphics card, among other features; Now, with more and more SAP systems getting connected to the Web, the security landscape for many organizations is changing. Just how much and what those changes mean will be highlighted at the upcoming Black Hat DC conference by Mariano Nuñez Di Croce, director of research and development for Onapsis. Black Hat DC 2011 will run from Jan. 16-19 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City hotel in Arlington, Va.

Join host Ashley Daley as she catches up with Eric Lundquist, live from the Consumer Electronics Show floor in Las Vegas. Eric lets us in on predictions for 2011 and the top new product releases for the year, such as the Motorola Atrix 4G, the Motorola Cliq 2, the Motorola Droid Bionic, and the Motorola Xoom tablet, which is based on the Android 3.0 version optimized for tablets. Samsung, meanwhile, will launch this year a WiFi-only Galaxy Tab, the Galaxy Player, and the Infuse 4G, an AT&T handset with a 4.5-inch screen. Also big this year; tablet PCs. Going into 2010, netbooks were all the rage both in the consumer market and the enterprise. But as soon as Apple introduced the iPad tablet and several similar devices followed it, netbooks lost their value to customers around the world. The industry is getting an early indication of how strongly buyers are interested in tablets during this years CES. Verizon Wireless is also making big announcements at CES. It announced a suite of 10 forthcoming 4G LTE devices including smartphones from HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung; tablets from Motorola and Samsung; a MiFi from Novatel Wireless and a mobile hotspot from Samsung; and two notebooks from HP. Mac owners can now purchase programs for their desktops and laptops with a single click, just as you can buy songs on iTunes and games in the App Store for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Apple has set January 6, 2011 as the launch date for the App Store, which will be available in 90 countries with free and for-pay software in categories such as education, games, graphics and design, lifestyle, productivity, and utility. On the developer side, Apple says developers will set the price of the applications and get 70 percent of the revenue. They also do not have to pay for hosting, marketing, or credit card transaction fees; Yahoo announced it will be cutting about 4% of its workforce, which would equate to around 600 jobs. The company also said its planning to shut down several "underperforming" and "non-core" Web properties as it continues a years-long turnaround effort. According to a Yahoo spokeswoman, sites that could be affected by the moves include Delicious, a so-called social bookmarking service; the venerable Web search sites AltaVista and All The Web; and Buzz, which aggregates news stories from around the Web and lets people vote on how important they are; Next summer, Google will be rolling out its Chrome Operating System into the mix with the likes of Windows and Apple OS. Chrome OS is based on Google’s Chrome Web browser. Instead of storing most programs and files on your computer itself, the Chrome OS will mainly run programs from, and require you to keep your data in, the cloud. In effect, it turns your entire computer into a giant Web browser, instead of treating the browser as just one among many local programs. Another cool browser being released soon is RockMelt. Weve mentioned them before. In the first-ever browser where users will have to log in, RockMelt will automatically open Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, and keep it right at your fingertips; And lastly today, we give you a quick peek at the cover of TIME magazine, where the publication named Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerburg as its Person of the Year.

As a year dominated by social media comes to a close, Searchmetrics, the provider of search analytics software, reveals its insights and predictions for the search engine optimization (SEO) landscape in 2011; According to a new survey by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri, Apple’s iPad is killing print newspaper subscriptions. Around 84.4 percent of the survey’s 1,600 participants said they use their iPad to follow breaking news and current events. The Institute’s Program Director and Digital Publish and Research Project leader Roger Fidler wrote in a Dec. 9 statement, "These findings are encouraging for newspaper publishers who plan to begin charging for subscriptions on their iPad app editions early next year, but our survey also found a potential downside: iPad news apps may diminish newspaper print subscriptions in 2011.”; If youve experienced a power outage, you know how frustrating they can be. But just wait until you hear how big of a pain in the wallet they are as well. CA Technologies conducted a study through a series of interviews with CIOs, IT directors, and IT managers from 200 companies spanning the financial services, manufacturing, retail, and public sectors. This week, Google rolled out its long-awaited and delayed Google eBookstore, offering hundreds of thousands of paid titles and more than 2 million free titles, totaling 3 million-plus works. What differentiates Google eBooks from those services is that there is no dedicated device for the books to run on. Google encourages users to search and pay for hundreds of thousands of titles from publishers and read them on their desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones, as the content is tethered to the cloud, not specific devices; Facebook has been raising concerns over security ever since it went public, especially for those of you who use applications, such as Mafia Wars or Farmville. The main concern is that these applications are then sending your information out to third-party companies. Facebook has felt the pressure and during the next few weeks, the social networking site plans to roll out a new application dashboard to mobile users. According to Facebook, the dashboard will give mobile users a detailed view into what information they have shared with different applications and Web sites, and the ability to adjust those settings "on the go." In addition, the Applications and Websites section of its privacy settings will display a full list of applications being used and when these apps last accessed their information; Analysts say 2010 saw little growth and a lot of movement to rent or lease talent rather than hand out full-time salaries and benefits. Some see 2011 in the same light: Plenty of work and business for contractors, consultants, and managed service providers. According to Janco Associates, business and analytical skills coupled with technology experience are highly sought-after skills; At the Gartner Data Center Conference at Las Vegas this week, Unisys and Rackspace rolled out private cloud offerings that combine cloud computing efficiencies, cost savings, and scalability, with the convenience and security of managed hosting services. Then, Oracle on Dec. 8 launched Exalogic Elastic Cloud X2-2, a new-generation Java application infrastructure for virtual machines. The announcement was made at OracleOpenWorld Brazil in Sao Paulo. Elastic Cloud X2-2 is the cloud middleware expressly designed for Oracle’s SPARC Exalogic, which is the company’s new hardware platform for cloud systems. Its sister product, Exadata, is the SPARC database server.

As you log into your Facebook account, youll soon notice the option to switch to the newest edition. The social networking site has revamped the profile pages, which features a strip of your tagged photos across the top of the page now, instead of under your profile picture. The pages will also allow users to summarize at the top of each page who they are by listing where youre from, where you live now, what you do for work, and what you like. Facebook will be gradually rolling out this new redesign over the next year, but each user has the option to switch to it immediately if they like; The New York Times is reporting that Facebook is rumored to be renting space on Madison Avenue in New York City. The social networking site already has a small office in the Big Apple, but is said to be upgrading to as much as 150,000 square feet, which could suggest that Facebook may be planning to employ as many as 600 people in New York City, expanding its sales and operations departments on the East Coast. Currently, Facebook has 15 open positions in New York City; And if you were following the buzz last week about Google supposedly shelling out $6 billion dollars to purchase the site Groupon, the latter has turned the offer down. The Chicago-based localized shopping Web service apparently decided that its best move is to remain independent for the time being; Google is still on the move though, recently acquiring two other companies: Widevine and speech synthesis startup Phonetic Arts. Regarding Widevine, Google is looking to bolster is YouTube Web site with video optimization and digital rights management technology. Then theres Phonetic Arts, whose software samples human speech and tailors it for computers; WikiLeaks is on the run. With mounting government pressure from France and the United States, hosting and DNS providers are backing away from the site, forcing WikiLeaks to keep moving in order to stay online. On Dec 2, U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman issued a statement that asks what "Web service providers will do in the future to ensure that their services are not used to distribute stolen, classified information." This move by the senator has made many companies nervous, including some like Amazon and Tableau Public, which have since cut ties with WikiLeaks.

Web pundits are lining up to sound the death knell for Google TV, the marriage between Web- and channel-surfing that spawned some pricey hardware products from Logitech and Sony. TechCrunch noted that Sony has dropped the price of its Google TV-enabled Blu-ray player from $399 to $299. PC Magazine learned Sony also pared its Google TV set prices. The 46-inch, Google TV-enabled Sony TV is now $1,199, down $200. The 40-inch set is available for $898, a $100 discount.<br><br>
Its been almost 10 years since the 911 emergency service has been updated, but according to several news sources, the FCC is proposing a few more changes. First, the new system would allow people in need of urgent assistance to contact 911 via text message or video streamlined directly from their mobile phones. About 70 percent of 911 callers are dialing from their cell phones, so the move makes perfect sense.<br><br>
For those of you who just cant get enough of Apple and were hoping to take home the Steve Jobs doll this holiday season, well, youll have to settle for the Apple iPad instead. Apples law firm has ordered the Chinese Manufacturer M.I.C. Gadget to cease production of their action figure immediately, claiming the company has not consented to the use of Apples copyrights and trademarks. M.I.C. Gadget had created and sold out its first production run of 300 dolls.<br><br>
Christmas is the season of giving, and Hollywood is hoping you also give back this holiday season. A few of your favorite celebrities are actually dying a little for the cause, including Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Dave Chappelle, to name a few. And by dying, I mean each celebrity will be sacrificing their digital lives meaning theyll be giving up Facebook and Twitter. And in order to get them back, fans will have to collectively donate $1 million. Sounds a little crazy, right? Well, Wednesday also happens to be World AIDS day, and all proceeds will benefit Alicia Keys charity, Keep A Child Alive, which finances medical care and support services for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

Apple has released an update for its devices. The new iOS 4.2 boasts features such as AirPrint, which allows wireless printing for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, in addition to stronger security and device-management capabilities. On the consumer side, iOS 4.2 offers AirPlay, which allows an Apple mobile device to stream multimedia to an Apple TV or supported speakers. And lastly theres Game Center, which turns the various i-Devices into a multiplayer-centric gaming platform, matching players to new opponents and displaying top scores; Google has just released Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office to help users build Office documents, save them to Google Docs and share them with other users. The Cloud Connect plug-in is Google’s attempt to bridge the gap between Office and Docs; On-demand sales performance management (SPM) provider Xactly announced that Xactly Express is now available on Force.com, Salesforce.coms enterprise cloud computing platform. Xactly can now provide small to medium-size business customers the incentive compensation management functionality of Xactly Express on a comprehensive Cloud 2 foundation, regardless of whether the customer is currently a Salesforce CRM user. Xactly Express is available for test drive and deployment on AppExchange 2, according to a company release; Business people will attest to the fact that when you’re in a time crunch, there are few things more important than finding a parking place preferably an inexpensive one when you really need it. Well, IBM thinks that solving that problem is important enough to award its highest honor for innovation to a California-based startup, Streetline, which does exactly that. Big Blue on Nov. 18 named Streetline the winner of its Global Entrepreneur of the Year award. The finals of the international IBM SmartCamps competition were held in Dublin, where the company has a large development and manufacturing facility.

Pretty soon your mobile phone will also be able to moonlight as your mobile wallet. Thats right, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have teamed up to create a new mobile commerce network, calling it ISIS. It will work by using near-field communication technology with short-range, high-frequency wireless technology to enable the encrypted exchange of information between devices at a short distance. The tri-network venture has a customer-base of over 200 million and expects to launch in “key geographic markets” in the next 18 months; Facebook has announced a new unified messaging system that provides users with e-mail. Users will also have the ability to communicate with one another on the Web and on mobile phones regardless of whether they are using e-mail, text messaging, or online chat services. The new service encourages users to sign up for an e-mail address ending in @facebook.com, but of course will not be mandatory; With 2011 right around the corner, what do you all believe will be the key business trends of 2011? And what are the technologies to watch as we enter the new year? Google has paired up with 3 airlines: Delta, Virgin Atlantic and Air Tran to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi during the holidays. The deal will last from Nov.20th- Jan 2nd! Now for those of you flying those airlines and wishing to connect– simply search for the Gogo Inflight network and connect your device. Were all spending more and more time online these days and now today there’s a new web browser that will allow you to spend all of that time in just one spot. Its called RockMelt. Rock Melt will live in the cloud like Google, allowing anytime anywhere access—and its a first of its kind browser where users will have to log-in. The new browser is in beta version, but they are allowing users to sign up for a test run, by visiting www.rockmelt.com; Google is giving every single one of their 23,000 employees a 10% raise, starting January 1st. And not only that, every Googler is also getting a $1,000 cash holiday bonus, and Google is paying the taxes on it, so they keep the whole amount. This is a big move by the software giant to retain its talented employees and keep them from going to work for the competition, such as Facebook; We first told you about the RIM tablet, named the Playbook a month ago sited its rumored release to be this Nov. As it turns out, a RIM rep has confirmed that the tablet computer will not be released until early 2011.

Cisco is releasing new software called SocialMiner to help companies see and keep track of what consumers are saying on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as blogs and other online networking environments. Not only will the new software allow companies to track these conversations, but it also allows companies to join in on them and respond to those comments; Come Nov. 8, IBM will be rolling out a new version of Lotus Connections, called Lotus Connections Next, and will supposedly cut out the social media noise. New features gleaned from IBM’s Cognos business analytics unit will be applied across the myriad recommendations, ratings, rankings, and reputations capabilities in Lotus Connections Next; And of course, what would our lives be if we didnt discuss Facebook at least once today? The social networking site is releasing its new Single Sign On feature. This will allow users logged into Facebook to easily log into applications that support SSO with a single click meaning youll no longer have to enter your user name and password a million times to access each app. Signing in once will sign you in to all of your participating apps. Facebook SSO is available now on Android apps such as Groupon, Loopt, SCVNGR, Yelp, Flixster, and Zynga Poker, with SSO for iPhone apps available soon; Google, Yahoo, and Bing have some fresh competition. Launched Nov. 1, a new search engine site named Blekko promises a new, curated form of search customized by its users. Blekko users can create slashtags, which help them search only the sites users want. This cuts out the spam of irrelevant information and links associated with classic search engines.

Ray Ozzie, the outgoing Chief Software Architect at Microsoft, released a goodbye memo in the form of a blog post this week. In the nearly three-page post, Ozzie looks back at his past five years at Microsoft, and both praises and criticizes the progress the company has made. We have all of the juicy details; MySpace is getting a make-over, and we give you a sneak peek at the sites new features; Barnes and Noble is releasing an e-reader, named the Nook Color. The device will be launching November 19. We have all the details and product specs; Apple has twice delayed the release of the white iPhone 4 and according to a new report, Apple fans who have been holding out for the white smartphone will have to keep waiting until Spring 2011; Yahoo mail is getting its biggest redesign since 2005 to make it a message hub for its 279 million users. At the center of the revamp is a plan to make communication systems much more compatible with social media such as Facebook and Twitter; Apple has released two new versions of its Mac Book Air laptops and lowered the price tag for the devices. eWEEK Labs editors recently reviewed the new devices.
