DBS eyeing Indonesia assets but not China bank stakes: Update

DBS Group <DBSM.SI>, aiming to expand beyond its home base of Singapore, is open to buying Indonesian assets that offer good returns but is not interested for now in Chinese banks where it can only get minority stakes, its chief executive said.

Piyush Gupta, chief executive of Southeast Asia’s largest bank, also told a media briefing in Taipei on Monday that lower interest rates in Singapore were having a negative impact on the group’s net interest income, but not a dramatic one.

GMG Global says eyeing foreign rubber firm in SE Asia

Singapore-listed rubber producer GMG Global (GMGG.SI), said on Wednesday it is in talks to acquire a foreign rubber company in Southeast Asia and embarking on a new rubber-related project in Africa.
 
GMG did not provide more details on the acquisition target or the African project.
 
The statement came after its stock was suspended around midday following a 23% surge, which triggered a trading query from the Singapore Exchange.

Temasek eyeing benchmark sterling bond sale: Reuters sources

Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL) is looking to sell sterling-denominated bonds, its first issue in the British currency, to diversify its funding sources, people with knowledge of the deal told Reuters.

Temasek plans a benchmark issue, industry jargon for an issue equivalent to at least US$500 million ($690 million), and is in the process of sounding out potential investors through UBS (UBSN.VX), Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) and HSBC (HSBA.L), the sources said.

Hedge fund Algebris heads to Asia; eyeing Singapore and Hong Kong

London-based hedge fund manager Algebris Investments LLP is in talks to set up a base in Asia over the next few months, joining a slew of Western managers driven to the region in search of higher returns and a friendlier regulatory environment, two sources said. 
 
Top officials from Algebris — backed by activist investor Christopher Hohn — visited Asia on a reconnaissance mission earlier this year but had yet to take a call on whether the new office will be located in Hong Kong or Singapore, said one of the sources.

Google Eyeing Location-Based Mashups, but Says Privacy Is Paramount

Google sees value in using location-based services, such as Google Latitude and Google Buzz to connect to disparate Web services and provide recommendations, but the search engine believes it’s important to mitigate the potential privacy scares associated with such services. To do this, Google product manager Steve Lee said making such services opt-in is crucial. There would also have to be a mutual understanding between the friend providing the recommendation from an app and the recipient of the recommendation for this to work.

Google Plugging Privacy Holes in Google Buzz, Eyeing Stand-alone Version

Google said it is plugging more privacy flaws in Google Buzz and is mulling a version of the social service that is not integrated with Gmail. Google told Business Insider it is working on two more controls with regard to Google Reader, which along with Twitter, Flickr and YouTube connects with Buzz. These came in response to an angry blogger who found her personal info was made accessible to an abusive ex-husband through the connection between Buzz and Google Reader. Google is also considering a version of Google Buzz that does not run in Gmail, according to Search Engine Land.

Enterprises Eyeing New Communications Solutions, Analysts Say

Businesses will continue expanding their use of such technologies as VOIP and UC over the next few years, according to In-Stat and DellOro. By 2013, 79 percent of U.S. businesses will have deployed a VOIP solution, In-Stat said. By 2014, revenues generated in the UC space will outpace those in the larger enterprise voice market, DellOro group said.
