Law and religion: Faith in courts
As the season of goodwill fades, an old problem returns: religious disputes that draw in secular courts
PULSES rarely race in Shaughnessy, a genteel, old-money district of Vancouver where mature cedars shield mansions with giant drawing-rooms. But the splendid Anglican church there, which draws worshippers from across the city, is the centre of a dispute that arises in many countries: how should judges rule in religious rows? Usually such quarrels involve worldly goods and rival claims to be the true believers. They quickly raise theological issues normally settled in church councils, not the courtroom.
St John’s Shaughnessy is the largest of four conservative parishes in British Columbia that have quit Canada’s mainstream Anglican (Episcopalian) church in protest against the blessing of same-sex unions. They want to take their churches and their other property with them; their bishop is resisting. …

Trusting charities: Faith, hope and charities
The public trusts charities more than any other type of organisation. But measuring do-gooding risks shattering some illusions
FEW institutions in the modern world enjoy more trust than charities—a trust given both by rich people who give them money and by the wider public that may benefit from their work. A recent survey by American Express shows that 70% of Americans trust non-profit outfits more than government or business to “address some of the most pressing issues of our time”. A survey by Merrill Lynch of rich people found that over 94% trusted non-profit organisations (business won a 68% rating and government a paltry 32%).
Trust in do-gooders extends well beyond America. This year’s “Trust Barometer”, an annual survey of attitudes in six countries by Edelman, a PR firm, found that non-governmental organisations, or NGOs (as non-profits tend to be described outside America), were more trusted than governments or businesses. That was true even in China, where trust in NGOs had been low only five years earlier. …

Psychology: Faith and faithfulness
Praying for your partner stops you straying
INFIDELITY is rampant in nature. Birds, mammals, amphibians and even fish all cheat if the conditions are right, forcing mates to remain perpetually vigilant. People are no different. Although cheats are publicly condemned, or in some cases impeached, infidelity is common and public disapproval does little to dissuade the sinner. The disapproval of God, however, is a different matter, and a new study suggests that prayer can indeed guide people away from adulterous behaviour.
Frank Fincham at Florida State University and his colleagues knew from looking at past studies that couples who attend religious services are more likely to be satisfied with their marriages and less likely to be unfaithful than those who do not, but they did not understand why. Speculating that the act of praying might itself cause romantic relationships to become more resilient, the team set up an experiment to explore prayer and fidelity. …
