BRC Asia posts 52% fall in 1Q net profit to $3.3m

Mainboard-listed BRC Asia, one of the largest prefabricated steel reinforcement providers in Singapore, says net profit for first quarter ended 31 December 2010 (1Q2011) fell 52% y-o-y to $3.3 million due to rising steel costs and intense market competition which halved gross profit margin to 9.2% in 1Q2011 from 18.8% in 1Q2010. Revenue for first quarter ended 15% higher y-o-y to $72.4 million due to higher sales volume amidst buoyant construction activities in Singapore.

Longcheer posts 60% fall in 2Q net profit to $3m

Longcheer Holdings, the leading designer of mobile phones from China, says net profit attributable to shareholders fell 60% to RMB15.6 million ($3.03 million) for the three months ended Dec 31, 2010 (2QFY11).

Revenue declined 3% to RMB1 billion due mainly to decline in average selling prices although total shipment volume increased 40% from 5.76 million units in 2QFY10 to 8.04 million units in 2QFY11.

Osim International 4Q net income doubles, sales fall

Osim International said its fourth-quarter net income more than doubled to $17 million from $8 million a year earlier.

Sales in the quarter declined 6% to $133 million from $141 million, the company said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange today.

Russian, Afghan presidents meet

The Afghan and Russian presidents have taken steps to restart economic and political ties that have been almost nonexistent since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The meeting between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was highlighted by the signing of an agreement that could pave the way for Russia to participate in “priority economic projects” – including ones left unfinished after Soviet forces pulled out of the country in 1989, following nearly a decade of war.

Malaysia Smelting Corp. may fall; prices Singapore listing at discount

Malaysia Smelting Corp. (5916.KU) may fall toward MYR4.50 ($1.89), a one-week low, then MYR4.30, the one-month low, compared with Wednesday’s close of MYR4.60 (down 2.1%) when it resumes trading Monday, a local dealer says, after the company says it priced its secondary listing on the Singapore Exchange’s main board at $1.75/Share, equivalent to MYR4.17, which will raise $43.75 million.

Stocks down at midday on palm oil stocks; may fall

Palm oil stocks led Singapore shares lower at midday on Thursday as analysts expect crude palm oil prices may have limited upside in the near term following a strong rally.

Caution has also returned to the Singapore stock market with investors looking for cues from company results, which are likely to be announced in the next few weeks. Sentiment was also hit as Asian stocks fell due to poor earnings from Wall Street giants.

Singapore’s bankruptcies fall to lowest since 1996: Update 1

Singapore’s bankruptcy applications last year fell to the lowest level since 1996 as the city- state’s economy rebounded, posting the world’s fastest growth after Qatar.

The number of bankruptcy filings dropped 20% to 2,202 in 2010 from a year earlier, according to data on the Ministry of Law’s website. Bankruptcy applications last year were less than half of the 5,404 cases at the peak in 2003.

Singapore Press Holdings posts 29% fall in 1Q net profit to $102.3m

Singapore Press Holdings today reported net profit attributable to shareholders for the first quarter ended 30 November 2010 (1Q 2011) fell 29.3% y-o-y to $102.3 million.

Profit from the Newspaper and Magazine segment improved by 10.0%, driven by the increase in print advertisement revenue.

Singapore property developer stocks with a residential focus could fall about 10% near-term if past reactions to property curbs are anything to go by, says Morgan Stanley.

Qian Hu posts 64.8% fall in 4Q net profit to $0.6m

Qian Hu Corporation, the Mainboard-listed integrated ornamental fish service provider, says it posted a net profit fell 64.8% year-on-year for the fourth quarter ending Dec 31 (4Q2010).

Group revenue dipped 6.8% to $22.2 million with Ornamental Fish sales declining 8.8% y-o-y to $10.2 million, Accessories by 7.4% to $9.1 million while Plastics grew 2.7% to $2.9 million.
