With only 24 hours left for Nepal’s political parties to name their candidates, the prime ministerial poll Thursday in the turbulent republic is headed for another fiasco. Last year, 16 rounds of vote failed to name a new premier. The dim hope that the three major parties would hammer out an agreement to form a [...]

Eight Things to Learn from the Gawker Fiasco
When it became clear over the weekend of Dec. 11-12 that Gawker Media’s user database had been compromised by a hacker group, perhaps the most shocking thing about the case was not the break-in itself or the sizable number of people using the Gawker sites who use a business or U.S. government e-mail as their point of contact. Instead, the real attention grabber from a technical point of view turned out to be how woefully unsecure Gawker’s servers and data were. The haul included the user-and-password database, e-mail and chat room threads that detailed Gawker Media’s day-to-day operations, and the proprietary source code for the Gawker sites, which the company considered an asset with commercial potential. With user identities compromised, the once-secret source code now published for anyone to pick over and more than a few people cheering at the iconoclasts hoisted by their own petard, here are eight lessons that we can learn from the humbling of Gawker’s IT staff. – …
Nathan Moore: Hippy Fiasco Rides Again California Tour Starts Today
SPONTANEOUS TOUR HITS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA THIS WEEK
“Hard times, ain’t just some old folk song,” writes Nathan Moore in the lead track off his 2009 album Folk Singer (JamBase review), and this week he’s publicly demonstrating his belief that the antidote for hard times is community and creative solutions to problems.
When he flew in to perform at an established festival in California this past weekend and discovered most of the main artists had pulled out for fear of not being paid, he did what Nathan Moore does best – he jumped in with both feet. “I think they need me,” he told his manager when discussing the options. So, he went, knowing that like most artists struggling to make ends meet on tour he risked losing money yet again. The festival meltdown illustrates the impact of hard times on festivals, musicians and fans alike, and Moore’s attitude shows he takes his role as everybody’s troubadour to heart.
Nathan now is calling on his California fans to pull together and help him by supporting a spontaneous 7-day tour to recoup expenses (details below and you can keep up with latest on Facebook). The “Hippy Fiasco Rides Again” was assembled in barely 36 hours using social networking and text messages to spread the word and will include public and private shows. He and his tour manager worked completely from Nathan’s iPhone, including creating this video to spread the word.
