Elle Macpherson in a Fiat

I have just read a release from Fiat gushing that the model Elle Macpherson is a big fan of the 500C. Fair enough. There are some nice pics of the lady and the car. No harm in that. She was also an attendee at the big Jaguar XJ party in London a few weeks ago, so it would seem that she perhaps is quite keen on endorsing automotive products. And if I were her, I probably would be, too.

But the celebrity endorsements on cars are just a bit predictable aren’t they? There’s a celeb list pecking order and different brands ally themselves with what they can get and what they consider best complements brand and product for the budget they have.

Myself, I am waiting for a link-up that is just a bit more edgy and imaginative. A ‘celebrity’ endorsement that really jumps off the page (or screen). Could militant ex-coal miners’ leader Arthur Scargill be persuaded to get in a cheap car for the proletariat? Banker Fred Goodwin in a luxury limo? Jeffrey Archer in something that is, somehow, a bit deceptive or that has a dodgy reputation? Or, better still, mix it up and play with people’s minds a bit. Scargill’s in the limo, Goodwin’s in the hairshirt econobox and Archer’s in the ‘honest’ motor, steeped in integrity.

Here are a few suggested TV advertising ideas off the top of my head.

Scargill, with car in a windswept location, his comb-over out of control: [shouting, jabbing his index finger at the camera] ‘Like me, this car will never surrender while it has a breath in its body.’ [But he doesn't get in the car, he walks up and puts a leaflet under the windscreen wipers that reads 'I told you so'; but as he walks away, the wipers engage and the leaflet blows away].

Goodwin, in a lavish location, south of France maybe: [well dressed, emerges from swanky restaurant, well-healed and attractive woman on his arm, turns to camera] ‘ Me? I watch my pennies, which is why this car [moves to open the door on incongruous small hatchback, parallel parked in the street next to luxobarges twice its size] meets my needs.’ [Drives off to sound of 'Fly me to the moon']

Jeffrey Archer is standing outside a prison gate: ‘Regrets? Yes, I have a few. But this isn’t one of them’ [grins madly, climbs into his car and then, a little perversely, drives into the prison as the big gate opens, to the tune of Louis Armstrong singing 'When you're smiling' - the suggestion is that Archer has turned his life around, is doing some good works in the prison and that his car is a part of his personal renaissance and a rejection of his previous, slightly less than wholesome, values...].

Cvetković talks business in Trieste

Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, who is in Trieste on a two-day visit, says that Fiat’s investment in Serbia might be even bigger than expected. “We see our relationship with Fiat as one of the most important industrial investments in Serbia, and based on the information we share with our partners, we are confident that the economic crisis can only postpone the completion of the project and not stop it,” Cvetkovic said in a statement to Italian news agency ANSA.

First Punto Diesel rolls off production line

Production of the Fiat Punto with a 1.3 liter diesel engine has begun today in Kragujevac’s Zastava factory. Fiat will make two versions of this model—the “Dynamic” and the “Emotion”.

Fiat 500 C

The Fiat 500 C press event I went to at the end of last week was worth going to. Thankfully, I didn’t find myself listening to an over-detailed presentation about the technical specs of the car (that stuff should all be available in the press pack). Most journalists appreciate a to-the-point presentation that highlights what’s important rather than a methodical ploughing through of everything about the car.

In fact, the Fiat UK MD, Andy Humberstone, stuck to the basics of the car and talked more broadly about Fiat UK’s business (here’s a link to the article I was able to write before breakfast, pleasantly hangover free – no need for an Audi-style corporate-manslaughter-avoiding press launch breathalyser).

The car? I hate to sound kind of sexist, but I think it will appeal particularly to young professional females. I like what Fiat have done with the soft top and there’s a ‘girlie’ feel, especially inside. Nothing wrong with that. After seeing BBC Top Gear last night (they did a comparison of small premium cars and admitted afterwards that they had overlooked the best of the lot – the 500), Fiat can perhaps be excused a bit of a bask in the good reception the car has had. The new variant should do well. With small cars all the rage in Europe, it looks like the right product at the right time.

Maybe not a car for thrashing, but it certainly provides enough fun around town for the target customer.

How would it do in the States, I wonder…

Some pics below. Dorset coast was pretty and the hotel was just off Poole quay where we could see the Sunseeker boat yard and some rather large yachts. A jolly chap called Dennis fom a Bridport radio station told me over a beer that a worker there once tried to make his own Sunseeker ‘One piece at a time’ Johnny Cash Caddy assembly line style. They caught him, but he’d got quite a long way to getting his own boat…

Fiat in UK

I’m heading down to the south coast this afternoon for a Fiat 500C (the convertible) press launch event.  Should be a good opportunity to hear about the car (and drive it) as well as get an update on how Fiat is doing in the UK. Fiat has put quite a bit of effort into transforming its UK dealer network in recent years (Fiat’s UK dealers were, to put it mildly, under performers). Is it getting the desired results? Hopefully, I can also ask someone at the sharp end about the UK car scrappage scheme – which is attracting some criticism in the industry.

Hope the fine weather holds.
