Irving Plaza Gets Name Back

IRVING PLAZA NAME COMES HOME COMPLETE WITH REPLICA OF ORIGINAL
MARQUEE

The Police

The New York Times
reports that famed music venue Irving Plaza, located at Irving Place and 15th Street in Manhattan, will get its original
name back after being re-named the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza in April 2007 as part of a branding campaign
by
current owner Live Nation. A replica of the original marquee has also been commissioned.

According to the New York Times, “The change is a rare admission of misjudgment by Live Nation, a giant worldwide
promoter. But since the company merged with Ticketmaster this year, its every move has been scrutinized, and Mr.
Morrow — who began running Live Nation’s operations in New York a few months after the name change — said the
restoration of the old name was part of a companywide effort to improve its image.”

The landmark club featured legendary performers such as The Ramones, Blondie, B-52′s, The Police, and The Clash,
and
is still considered a rite of passage for any young up-and-coming band.

Says Kevin Morrow, President of Live Nation’s New York division, “Since I’ve been here I haven’t had anyone say to
me, ‘What a great idea that was,’”, referring to the Fillmore name. “Almost everybody I talk to in the New York music
scene, one of their first experiences was at Irving Plaza. And I’m really excited to be able to bring back to the New
York music scene what people have overwhelmingly desired.”

Check out the video and the earlier discussion of American Beauty here.

Furthur will do an “Open Aire Soundcheck” on Friday, May 28. The full Furthur Stage schedule for the weekend can be found here, and the schedule for the daytime Sunshine Stage is here. Deadmau5: Summer Tour

HOOKED AND UNHOOKED, CANADIAN RISING STAR LIGHTS UP SUMMER STAGES

Deadmau5

Deadmau5 has announced a North America Tour this summer. Consisting of over 20 dates, which launch May 29 at the Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington State, the electronic music producer and performer will tour his festival show featuring high-end production and a new LED-activated mau5head.

Along the tour route, Deadmau5 will also perform a few ‘Unhooked’ shows. “Deadmau5 unhooked will mean no massive stage and no LED mau5head,” he says. “There will still be some form of production, LED screen and lights and all that stuff…but at some shows it just won’t be possible to supply the LED head of the huge new stage because of travel and routing. That thing isn’t exactly portable!! On the upside, ‘Unhooked’ sets tend to be longer and more diverse.”

“Like a Lite-Brite with a short fuse, this electronic music performer’s onstage visuals pulsed, glowed, and had a giant crowd exploding in ecstasy with each ebb and flow of his music. It was a sight to see: a 15-foot tall cubic structure stood on its corner, as its sides projected a tangle of multi-colored dots, lines, and other form-shifting shapes. Huge screens in the background blasted even more visuals, and the man born Joel Thomas Zimmerman stood atop the structure in a mouse outfit that was equipped with lights,” wrote William Goodman at Spin.com.

“Mr. Mau5 is a headliner at global music festivals, and he’s evolved to live up to the billing by presenting an electrifying set of bombastic lights and razor-edged electro-house Friday night at Coachella. Deadmau5, in his signature mouse-ears costume, blasted the festival’s Sahara tent with sound and light like a radiologist zaps your bones,” wrote Dennis Romero at LAWEEKLY.com.

Joey Ramone Birthday Bash Hank III, Steven Van Zandt

GABBA GABBA HEY INDEED

Hank III

Celebrating what would have been the 59th birthday of punk icon Joey Ramone, the annual Joey Ramone Birthday Bash will take place Wednesday, May 19 at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza in New York City. Mickey Leigh, event organizer and brother of Joey Ramone, has announced this year’s lineup, and net proceeds will go to benefit Lymphoma research.

This year’s headliners are Hank Williams III and Morningwood. Once again, the spectacular party will conclude with The Joey Ramone Birthday Bashers featuring Richie Ramone, Hank III, Walter Lure, Cheetah Chrome, JP Thunderbolt, Ed Stasium, Jean Beauvoir, George Tabb, Ivan Julian, Al Maddy, Walt Stack, Dave Merrill, Mickey Leigh and others. Also appearing are The Sic F*cks, The Independents, Spanking Charlene (winners of Little Steven’s Wicked Cool Records contest) and Heap.

As the audience enters the venue they will once again be greeted by musician Tracy Thornton, playing Ramones songs on the steel drum. And, in what has become a Birthday Bash tradition, Sean O’Sullivan’s Punk Pipers will round out the night with their rendition of “I Wanna Be Sedated” on bagpipes. The Masters of Ceremony for this year’s fete will be Steven Van Zandt, Steve Craig, Matt Pinfield and Pete Ashner.

Ramone, who passed away in April 2001 after a seven-year battle with Lymphoma, had a history of encouraging up-and-coming bands in New York’s downtown music scene by showcasing them at his special “Joey Ramone PresentsÂ…” events. Since Ramone’s passing, his brother and their mother Charlotte Lesher have carried on the tradition “by featuring bands that make great music and getting together some of Joey’s friends to celebrate him on what would otherwise be a sad, somber day,” Leigh explains.

Tickets are available in advance at the Fillmore box office for $25 ($30 day of show) or here.

Baaba Maal: Summer Dates

TOUR INCLUDES STOPS AT BONNAROO, CENTRAL PARK SUMMERSTAGE

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL, HOLLYWOOD BOWL

Baaba Maal

In the midst of a U.S. tour that has brought audiences to their feet across the country, Baaba Maal has announced initial
June tour dates including a set at Bonnaroo (TN) and the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (CA)
and special shows at the Hollywood Bowl (CA) and Central Park Summerstage (NY). Baaba Maal’s current North
American tour, which kicked off on April 6 in Toronto, ON, is the legendary Senegalese musician’s first U.S. tour in
four years. Baaba and his band have been welcomed back with open arms, with audience members dancing in the
aisles and filling formal concert halls with wild celebration. Stay tuned for more summer dates to be announced.

Baaba Maal’s most recent album, Television, is a collaboration primarily with singer Sabina
Sciubba
and keyboardist Didi Gutman, both members of New York’s Brazilian Girls. The result is a stunningly
beautiful and diverse record that meshes two genres, generally unfamiliar to each other, to produce an eclectic and
romantic sound. The enigmatically named title-track refers to a relatively recent phenomenon in Africa – ubiquitous
TV screens. “The television set is like a stranger you didn’t ask for coming into your living-room,” explains Baaba. “You don’t care about who he is: he just seems to come from nowhere and gives you information.”

moe. :: 04.17.10 :: Fillmore Auditorium :: Denver, CO

moe. with Kyle Hollingsworth :: 04.17.10 :: Denver

moe. has long been accused of endless noodling, but as any fan of the band would argue, “You either get it or you don’t.”

On Saturday night at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium, more than 2,000 moe. fans “got it.”

The band hit the stage for the final show of their two-night stint at the Fillmore wearing suits and ties, dressed like stunt doubles from a Martin Scorsese movie, and leapt into three hours of their patented polyrhythmic rock.

The evening’s first set began with a frenetic “Skrunk,” punctuated by Rob Derhak‘s full-frontal bass assault. Following a cheerful wave from Derhak came “Captain America,” which had everyone on the packed floor – including one fire marshal – grooving to the music and singing “You may be right, you may be wrong” during the chorus.

Without missing a beat, the band transitioned into “Akimbo,” showcasing for the first time their ability to change musical direction with whiplash precision. After a brief pause to get everything just exactly right, the audience was rewarded with the Caribbean lilt of “Bring it Back Home,” drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist extraordinaire Jim Loughlin stirring the pot with their percolating rhythms while guitarist Al Schnier led the jubilant throng through the song’s sing-along chorus.

During the slow transition into “Blue Jeans Pizza,” String Cheese Incident keyboardist and opening act Kyle Hollingsworth, sporting a black and white bovine suit, joined the boys for a trip to “Mexico,” his virtuosity shining through.

Jeff Austin with moe. :: 04.17.10 :: Denver

moe. began its second set sans Hollingsworth with a 15 minute “Water” which bled into “Tailspin,” the audience dancing in tandem with the song’s almost preternatural funk, before bounding into “Wind it Up.” Schnier and fellow guitarist Chuck Garvey simply shredded during the instrumental breaks, wrestling fat chords and piercing leads from their instruments.

Loughlin’s xylophone fills smoothed the jagged edges of the introspective “Letter Home,” before Yonder Mountain String Band‘s Jeff Austin stepped up to the plate with electric mandolin in hand for “Happy Hour Hero,” and “She.”

“Jeff’s a good dude,” Derhak said with a smile while Austin tuned his instrument. “He’s always up for a challenge.”

This musical “challenge” lasted 40 minutes, the band riding the waves of “Happy Hour Hero” while Austin’s mandolin riffs poured over the audience, adding splashes of color before turning the corner into the extended “She.”

After Austin left the stage to prolonged cheers of gratitude, moe. wrapped up its second set with “Seat of My Pants.” Quickly returning to the stage, they summoned their resources for one encore, an epic “Plane Crash,” during which they explored nearly all the genres of music they had touched upon earlier in the evening.

moe. taper and audience member Jim McCreedy, a longtime moe. fan from Boulder, said he has followed moe. for a number of years and called the band’s music “psychedelic rock on steroids. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up,” McCreedy said.

Indeed.

Black Crowes Indefinite Hiatus Acoustic Album & Tour

THE BLACK CROWES TO RELEASE DOUBLE ACOUSTIC ALBUM TO COMMEMORATE THEIR 20th ANNIVERSARY

“SAY GOODNIGHT TO THE BAD GUYS” 2010 TOUR WILL KICK OFF AUGUST 13

INDEFINITE HIATUS TO FOLLOW TOUR

The Black Crowes

In celebration of the 20th year anniversary of their 1990 debut multi-platinum release Shake Your Money Maker, The Black Crowes will release their first ever double album of all acoustic material on August 3, 2010.

After touring in 2009, The Black Crowes spent time at the Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles, recording over 20 songs from their 20-year history. The band arranged acoustic versions of many of their best-loved songs and the band’s catalogue picks.

The double album, Croweology, will be sold at the cost of a single album as a “Thank You” to their fans for 20 years of support. Also to be released on vinyl, the project was produced by Paul Stacey and will be released on The Black Crowes label, Silver Arrow, through Megaforce Records.

In late summer, The Black Crowes will kick off their “Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys” 2010 Tour, which will feature three hour performance sets in most markets. The shows are being billed as “Acoustic Hors D’oeuvres followed by an Electric Reception with The Black Crowes,” and will consist of a full hour and a half acoustic set followed by a full hour and a half electric set, except where noted below *. (See the “tour dates” section at www.blackcrowes.com for further details and on-sale dates.)

The tour will begin on August 13 in Milwaukee and is presently scheduled to conclude with the band’s annual multi-night stand at the Fillmore in San Francisco on December 19, 2010.

Following their 2010 “Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys” Tour the band has planned a lengthy hiatus.

Chris Robinson had this to say, “With a smile so wide you can count my teeth and with a heart so full of love that it is spilling over the rim, I offer a humble and simple thank you. Thank you for your time, your imaginations, your heartaches and joy. Thank you for 20 years of cosmic rock n roll. 20 years of keeping it weird. 20 years of chasing horizons and before the band that dares dream out loud puts it down for a while, we are proud to give you our Croweology. This year the music is only for you as we celebrate what has been, what is now and whatever will be.”

Rich Robinson said, “At this milestone in our career, I feel very fortunate that I have had the opportunity to spend my life making music. It’s been 20 years since we started out on this journey. I would like to extend my deep gratitude to all of our fans who have been there with us along the way. We would not have gotten here without your support. Every night I stand on the stage I feel great pride and respect for what we share with our fans. After this tour we are going to take some much needed time to spend with our families. But for now, we are very much looking forward to a great year of touring. I look forward to seeing all your familiar faces again on the road. See you soon.”

The Black Crowes are: Chris Robinson, Rich Robinson, Steve Gorman, Sven Pipien, Luther Dickinson, Adam MacDougall.

US Air Guitar Championships 7/22

US AIR GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCES NATIONAL FINALS

JULY 22, 2010: THE FILLMORE AT IRVING PLAZA NEW YORK, NY

HAND-PICKED PROFESSIONAL AIR GUITARISTS FROM 16 CITIES DESCEND UPON NEW YORK

Ricky Stinkfingers at Brooklyn Bowl from usairguitar.com

After being outbid by competing cities two straight years, the Big Apple has been given the honor of hosting the US Air Guitar Championships National Finals. On July 22 at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza, The US Air Guitar National
Finals will pit each of the 16 winners from each city against one another in a battle for Air Guitar supremacy. The
winner will be crowned the 2010 US Air Guitar Champion, and will then move on to the Air Guitar World
Championships in Finland to take on other National Champions from around the world.

US Air Guitar is currently in the process of assembling an unprecedented array of talent: 16 of the nation’s fiercest
and finest face-melters will go head-to-head to prove to one and all that they should represent the red, white, blue,
and undecideds at the World Air Guitar Championships in Finland. Veteran 2-time US Champion and 3-time New
York Regional Champion William Ocean will defend his title against the toughest and freshest competition
he has ever faced. Thus far, veterans Windhammer, Ricky Stinkfingers, and Lance the
Shred
have won the Regionals in Boston, New York, and Washington, DC respectively. But a crop of new talent
has also begun to upset past masters in qualifying rounds, including Philadelphia’s impromptu performance of
wildcard The High Drator. Is this a changing of the guard or will experience prevail in the end?

Our nation’s capitol hosted the Finals last year at the famed 9:30 Club, where William Ocean edged out local
favorites Lance the Shred and Sanjar the Destroyer to take his second US Crown in three years. In 2008,
San Francisco hosted the Finals, sending one of the nation’s finest Air Guitarists Hot Lixx Hulahan to
Finland where he went on to win the World title and become the third American in seven years achieve Global Air
Guitar immortality. New York and Los Angeles were home to the first five National Finals, which produced world
champions C-Diddy and Soynk Rok. This year, winners from around the country will descend
once again upon New York City, where the next US Air Guitar great will lay claim to the 2010 title.

Co-founder Kriston Rucker said of the choice, “New York City is where US Air Guitar hosted our first ever
competition, back in the days of C-Diddy, W and dollar slices. After a couple years away, we felt like bringing the
Finals home, back in the New York groove. The greatest city on earth has been very good to us. We intend to pay her
back in airness.”
