Neste Singapore biodiesel plant fully up in 6 months

Finland’s top refiner Neste Oil (NES1V.HE) expects its renewable diesel plant in Singapore to reach full capacity in six months, its chief executive said.

“It is a big refinery and we want to proceed slowly and see how it works and see if there are any bottlenecks,” Matti Lievonen told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

“It will take probably six months before full capacity will be reached. We are scaling up from 70,000 tonnes to 800,000 tonnes (annually),” he said.

Nuclear power: Team France in disarray

Unhappy attempts to revive a national industry

WHAT solar panels are to Germany and wind turbines are to Denmark, nuclear reactors are to France: not just a power source but a pitch for global leadership in a field that is green and sexily high-tech. Electricite de France (EDF), a giant state utility, runs all 59 of the country’s nuclear plants and more than anyone else in the world. Together with Areva and Alstom, two firms involved in many aspects of nuclear-power production, EDF is trying to compete for business overseas. But Team France is ailing.

Its main product is the European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR), vaunted as the most sophisticated, plane-crash-proof and efficient in the world. But just two are under construction, and only one is being built outside France. An EPR in Finland has been dogged by quality and regulatory problems, causing cost overruns of about €2.7 billion ($3.5 billion). The fiasco led Siemens of Germany to end a joint venture with Areva, the lead contractor, reducing the chances of Franco-German co-operation on further EPRs. …

Building hardware: Going up

Fitting large buildings with lifts, locks and electrical systems is nice work

PEOPLE around the world who live or work in high-rise buildings are likely to travel on the first or last leg of their daily commute courtesy of one of four firms. Otis, part of United Technologies, is the world’s leading liftmaker, with 23% of the global market. The American company, Schindler of Switzerland, Kone of Finland and the lift division of ThyssenKrupp, a German conglomerate, together supply about two-thirds of the world’s elevators.

Liftmakers’ fortunes are on the ascent. China’s rapid urbanisation and economic expansion helped them weather the recent recession in the rich world. In 2008, a bad year, the world market was still worth €33 billion (then $47 billion). Demand for lifts and escalators is still booming. Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric, the fifth-largest liftmaker, reckons the market will grow by 30% by 2016 thanks to China—which could account for half of global demand—plus India and other emerging economies. …

Neste Oil to soon start diesel plant in Singapore: Update

Neste Oil Oyj will soon begin making low-emissions diesel at a 550 million-euro ($998.8 million) plant in Singapore, ramping up production of renewable fuels that may provide a third of earnings after 2012, a company official said.

“We’re very close to start-up,” Jarmo Honkamaa, deputy chief executive officer of Neste Oil, Finland’s only petroleum refiner, said yesterday in a telephone interview. “We’re well on time and within the budget” for the project, which uses plant and animal products as feedstock.

Intel and Nokia Create First Joint Laboratory

University Research Center Will Lead to New User Interfaces and Experiences

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Intel Corporation, Nokia and the University of Oulu have announced the establishment of their first joint research center.
  • One of the first objectives of the new lab is to create new and compelling mobile user experiences that leverage the rapidly increasing capabilities of mobile devices.
  • The lab is the latest member of Intel Labs Europe – Intel’s European Research Network.

OULU, Finland, Aug. 24, 2010 – Intel Corporation, Nokia and the University of Oulu officially opened the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center today. It will employ about two dozen R&D professionals and become the latest member of Intel’s European Research Network, Intel Labs Europe.

Initially the lab will conduct research for new and compelling mobile user experiences that could leverage the rapidly increasing capabilities of mobile devices. Creating interfaces that are more similar to interactions in the real world can enable experiences that are more natural and intuitive, in the same way that modern games and movies are more immersive through the use of realistic 3-D graphics.

The new lab is well aligned with the MeeGo open source platform recently launched by Intel and Nokia. MeeGo provides the greatest flexibility for developing new 3-D experiences on mobile devices as much of the lab’s research activity will also be open source.

“The University of Oulu’s focus on future telecommunications solutions as well as electronics and photonics made it the perfect location for the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center,” says Justin Rattner, Intel chief technology officer and director of Intel Labs.

Another potential area of research could look into technologies that allow displaying a 3-D hologram of the person you are talking to on the phone, a capability only found in science fiction movies today. Consumers will feel more involved and engaged with their mobile experience than with current methods.

“3-D technology could change the way we use our mobile devices and make our experiences with them much more immersive,” said Rich Green, Senior vice president and chief technical officer, Nokia. “Our new joint laboratory with Intel draws on the Oulu research community’s 3-D interface expertise, and over time will lay down some important foundations for future mobile experiences.”

The lab will be located at the Center for Internet Excellence at the University of Oulu, and will work closely with the Oulu Urban Living Labs, which provide a unique environment for sensor research, testing and piloting technological and social innovations. The Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center follows a successful industry and academia collaboration model similar to the ones of Intel Labs Barcelona and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain, the Intel Visual Computing Institute and the Saarland University in Germany or Intel Labs Berkeley at the University of California at Berkeley in the United States.

About Intel Labs Europe

Today, Intel’s European research & development network, Intel Labs Europe, consists of 22 labs employing more than 900 R&D professionals.

Schumpeter: The curse of the alien boss

Nokia is reportedly seeking an outsider to revive it. Bad idea

INSIDE Nokia, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the company’s CEO, is known as OPK. In the wider tech world he is known as a dead man walking. The business press is buzzing with rumours of his imminent demise. Alas for him, these rumours have boosted his company’s share price.

Mr Kallasvuo took over the world’s largest phonemaker (which is also by far the biggest company in his native Finland) in the summer of 2006. Six months later Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone, and it has been downhill ever since. Nokia’s shares have tumbled by nearly two-thirds. Its profit margins have withered from 15% to 7%. And the firm has all but imploded in America, despite Mr Kallasvuo’s pledge to conquer the region. …

Quality of death

A ranking of care for the dying by country

CUSTOMER-satisfaction surveys are, alas, unsuitable for rating the quality of death. So the Economist Intelligence Unit, a sister group to The Economist, has devised a ranking of end-of-life care, published on Wednesday July 14th. It rates 40 mostly rich countries by how well they care for the dying. Britain tops the table. For all the health care system’s faults, British doctors tend to be honest about prognoses, the mortally ill get plentiful pain killers and a well-established hospice movement cares for people near death. Countries such as Denmark and Finland rank lower because they concentrate more on preventing death than on helping people die without suffering pain, discomfort and distress.
