Singapore bond sales beat record as economy fires

Singapore bond sales are accelerating as companies on an island vying for the title of world’s fastest-growing economy exploit the lowest funding costs in at least two decades to finance expansion.

Temasek Holdings and CapitaLand led borrowers that raised US$14.1 billion ($19.2 billion) this year, topping the record US$13.2 billion of notes sold in 2001, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The benchmark three-month interbank lending rate was last at 0.55708%, near the lowest since 1987, when data on the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s website starts.

Portuguese firefighters are continuing to battle dozens of forest fires that are sweeping through the country and have killed two of their colleagues. 50 fires are burning in central and northern parts of the country, according to the Reuters news agency.

Peat bog fires near Chernobyl site

The sight of smouldering peat bogs just 60 kilometres from Chernobyl has increased fears of a nuclear threat from wildfires in Eastern Europe. Forests in Ukraine, like Russia, have been burning in a sweltering heatwave. And the proximity of this particular fire to the site of the world’s worst civilian nuclear disaster is giving cause for concern.

Russian fires spread to far east

As the authorities battle to contain forest fires that have parts of central Russia, others have spread to the extreme east of the country. Officials close to the border with China say their region has been affected. Fires have also been reported in the Kamtchatka peninsula in the extreme north-east.

Shell fires up Singapore ethylene cracker for exports

Royal Dutch Shell Plc said it produced the first ethylene cargoes from a new cracker at its petrochemicals complex in Singapore, where the company operates its largest oil refinery, according to Bloomberg.

Shell produced “on-specification ethylene” from the cracker on March 22, it said today in an e-mailed statement. A butadiene extraction unit will open “over the next few months.”

The facility can “process various types of feedstock, ranging from liquefied petroleum gas to heavy liquid hydrocarbon such as hydrowax,” the statement said.

Newegg Fires Supplier IPEX in Fake Intel Chip Flap

Officials with online retailer Newegg have terminated their relationship with a supplier, IPEX, which they said was the source of counterfeit Intel Core i7-920 processors. Intel officials also are investigating the incident.

Microsoft Jan. 15 offered training vouchers to the first 500 Lotus Notes professionals who want to learn to use Microsoft’s Office productivity suite, Exchange e-mail server, SharePoint collaboration software, and Office Communications Server platform.
