The politics of food: Hungry for votes

How much do rich governments really worry about feeding the world?

LIKE national defence, securing food supplies usually counts as a core task of government. Hence, as prices surge, food security is rising to the top of the political agenda. Or so it sounds.

On January 24th the British government’s chief scientific officer said that “the case for urgent action in the global food system is now compelling.” He was presenting a report from hundreds of scientists that concluded with “a stark warning for both current and future decision-makers on the consequences of inaction—food production and the food system must assume a much higher priority in political agendas across the world.” …

What record food prices mean for business

HIGH prices are good for farmers. Low prices are good for consumers. “And we are in the middle,” says Alberto Weisser, the boss of Bunge, a trader of agricultural commodities. After poor harvests in Russia, Canada and Ukraine last year, a recent heatwave in Argentina and floods in Australia that wiped out much of the country’s wheat crop, everyone is grappling with pricey food.

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), food prices last month surpassed their previous high in 2008. “The situation is not rosy, but there is no reason for panic-buying,” says Abdolreza Abbassian at the FAO. …

Farmers and food prices: Dare to grow more

High food prices are not all bad news

ANY conversation on the streets of New Delhi turns easily to the cost of living, particularly that of eating. Stuck in an ocean of honking traffic in the city centre, Babu Lal complains about the exorbitant rent on his two-room flat, hard to afford on his earnings as a driver. But at least the rent does not vary from month to month. Food prices, on the other hand, have been climbing steadily. Mr Lal now has to fork out Rs110 ($2.40) for a kilo of dal, his main source of protein—a third more than he was paying only a few weeks ago.

Hundreds of millions of people, across India and the world, have similar worries. India’s central bank has raised interest rates six times since January in an attempt to tame double-digit inflation. In China politicians are worried that galloping food prices could cause another round of unrest among the country’s factory workers. The world is not yet in the midst of a food crisis comparable to that of the autumn of 2008. But since the middle of the year there has been a steep rise in the price of most agricultural commodities, including food crops (see chart). And the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation reckons that prices are unlikely to fall back to their pre-food-crisis levels in the next decade. …

Singapore-listed China food plays mostly lower

Shares of Singapore-listed China-based food companies mostly lower as investors cautious given Beijing’s plans for price controls on basic necessities, according to Dow Jones.

Sino Grandness Food (JS5.SG) off 1.2% at $0.40, Yamada Green Resources (MC7.SG) off 1.9% at $0.255, Synear Food (Z75.SG) off 2.1% at $0.235, China Minzhong Food (K2N.SG) flat at $1.25. Still, investors don’t appear to be overly bearish as selling pressure subdued based on modest volumes.

“The Chinese government’s comments on vegetable price intervention will help to moderate market expectations and put pressure on further price increases,” says DMG, but adds execution may be difficult as country’s fresh vegetables market highly fragmented.

Based on own checks with some of these companies, DMG says China Minzhong yet to receive official notice from government about price controls, while feedback from Yamada reveals subsidies have been given to supermarkets but no controls yet among fresh-food markets.
