Microsoft Lync 2010, a rebranding of the company’s Office Communications software suite, offers business users an end-user platform for enterprise VOIP (voice over IP), instant messaging, video and audio conferencing, and application and desktop sharing. In keeping with Microsoft’s drive toward interoperability, Lync will operate in conjunction with other software platforms such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint and Exchange. Research firm Forrester estimates that the overall unified communications market will be worth $14.5 billion by 2015, a ripe target for any software platform supple and sophisticated enough to appeal to businesses. During a recent demo in New York City, Microsoft executives demonstrated how Lync can allow groups of users to interface via voice or video, all while collaborating on a PowerPoint document. The New York Times said April 12 that Google is mulling the notion of building a tablet based on its Android operating system. The company has been reportedly talking with
publishers about putting books, magazine and other content on the device. The device could run Google’s Chrome Web browser and would support Adobe’s popular Flash software. Windows 7 Users Are Satisfied, Forrester Reports
Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system scored high satisfaction numbers from users in a recent survey. However, only 10 percent of Windows XP and Windows Vista users also reported they would upgrade to Windows 7 within the next six months. A Forrester analyst suggests that Windows 7 has broken the usual pattern of users primarily acquiring the new Windows OS when purchasing fresh hardware. Windows 7 has sold 90 million copies since its release in October 2009, according to Microsoft.
– About 86 percent of surveyed Windows 7 users said they were satisfied with
the operating system, according to a recent report by analyst company Forrester
