Twitter June 14 launched its Places feature to let users tag tweets with specific places they’re posting from. Twitter users can click the "Tweets about a place" tab in a Twitter Place within a tweet to see recent tweets from a location.
The microblog service also integrated Places with Foursquare and Gowalla. Users of those location-based Web services who publish check-ins to Twitter will see Twitter Places associated with tweets generated by these services. –

Yahoo on May 25 purchased location-based social service Koprol for an undisclosed sum, more than a month after reportedly whiffing on trying to buy social check-in service Foursquare. Koprol offers a social service that lets people share photos, reviews and location information from their Web-enabled phones. AdAge is reporting that Facebook is expected to challenge popular startup Foursquare by offering location-based status updates for its users later this month. McDonald’s is allegedly building an application with Facebook to allow users to check in at one of its restaurants and have a featured product appear in the post. What will be interesting to see is what effect Facebook’s move has on services from Gowalla and Foursquare, which has grown to support more than 1 million users in just over a year. Twitter Nov. 19 released its geotagging API to programmers, but users won’t yet be able to access location-based services from the Twitter.com Website. The feature, which allows users to selectively annotate their tweets with their exact location and provide more context to users about their surroundings, has been implemented on Twitter applications such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Twidroid and Seesmic Web. Creepy? Perhaps, but likely only to someone who wouldn’t opt in to use such a service in the first place.
