The Black Crowes | San Francisco | Review | Pics

The Black Crowes :: 12.14.10-12.15.10 :: The Fillmore :: San Francisco, CA

Chris Robinson by Josh Miller

A band’s officially announced hiatus is frequently the death knell for the music. When a group is ready to pull up stakes and head out into parts unknown, fans can almost be assured that what they’ll receive in the final days will be watered down, dispirited and most likely a shameless money grab. However, The Black Crowes proved a BIG exception at The Fillmore during their final gigs for the foreseeable future, showing off all their plumage and struttin’ with power, purpose and even a little pomp.

Each night was split into two sets, the first semi-acoustic and the second fully plugged in. This allowed a looser, chummier ease into each night – a high class hootenanny, if you will – that boiled one slower but perhaps even more surely than the Crowes usually do. With a few folks seated with acoustic instruments, the guys seemed relaxed but focused, comfortable and confident after a grueling fall/winter tour, which made their handling of just about every tune something to remember. I’ll let others debate “best ever” or the like and simply say that the circumstances pulled something special out of every musician onstage. Like the audience, they were aware that these performances would be the last of their kind for a good long time, and this sweetened (or perhaps bittersweetened) the proceedings.

Each song carried a glow of significance, an acknowledgement of the craftsmanship and many performances that preceded it. The rapturous crowd, largely hardcore Amoricans, sang along to even obscure numbers and drank it all in with naked affection and gratitude the likes of which any band would be humbled by. Chris Robinson, in perhaps his best voice in 10 years, seemed particularly touched by the love flooding from the floor and drove his mates to continually go a little deeper, play a touch harder, to deliver wherever and whenever they could. The Crowes have such a fun, illuminating catalog and they were eager to poke around in a bunch of it, though there was more setlist repetition this run than in the past. But, the repeats, though similar in structure, hit in different ways, like the “Ballad In Urgency > Wiser Time” that arrived in the acoustic set on Tuesday and the electric on Wednesday and the shift in context and tone made the bones of the song glow and prompted lyrical soloing from everyone both nights. The band seems more comfortable trotting out their signature numbers and even the early singles these days, understanding that “giving the people what they want” isn’t a sin, especially if the songs are as defining and great as “She Talks To Angels” and “Jealous Again.”

The Black Crowes by Josh Miller

The electric set on Wednesday night is worth a special mention. The song selection and basic attitude on display was quintessentially Crowes, a rock roar that only they make and myriad others have chased in their 20 year run. Beginning with sweet ‘n’ sour fan favorite “Cursed Diamond,” the band sunk deep into a heavy, propulsive groove, flexing their muscles with care and keeping a tight grip on explosive nuggets like “P.25 London” and “Paint An 8.” The Rich Robinson led cover of the Velvets’ “Oh Sweet Nuthin’” was nothing less than sublime. If folks are wondering which official download from these Fillmore shows to pick up, I’d highly recommend this night, which served up as fine a encapsulation of what the band sounds like in 2010 as any I’ve ever heard.

Each night, like the rest of the run, ended with a themed encore. On Tuesday, it was a trio of Beatles covers (“You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” “Yer Blues”
and “I Wanna Be Your Man,” the last with drummer Steve Gorman singing lead!), and Wednesday it was a triple play of quality blues (“Mellow Down Easy,” “Shake Your Moneymaker” and “Mean Town Blues”). Never shy about tipping their hats to influences, this nightly dynamic offered further insight into their favorites and proved a fine exclamation point to send the audience into the night on.

While the ultimate fate of The Black Crowes remains in limbo, based on the evidence of these shows, the music is hitting on all cylinders. The musical chemistry in this lineup is arguably the strongest it’s ever been in the band’s 20-year history. The possibilities seem barely scratched for what this bunch might do in the studio together, but Warpaint and Before The FrostÂ…Until The Freeze offered ample evidence that what this group of players shares goes beyond the stage. The flexibility and gusto they brought to these Fillmore shows also indicates an affection for making this singular music together that is strikingly different to the band’s previous hiatus in 2001. While this chapter is closed, this story seems far from over, and these shows only make the wait for a new beginning that much more tantalizing.

Tuesday Setlist
Acoustic Set: Cold Boy Smile, Whoa Mule, Ballad In Urgency > Wiser Time, The Dolphins, Darling Of The Underground Press, Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You, Smile, Time Will Tell, Wee Who See The Deep

Electric Set: Movin’ On Down The Line, Could I’ve Been So Blind, Song Of Love, Lady Of Avenue A, By Your Side, Hard To Handle, A Train Still Makes A Lonely Sound, Sting Me, Wounded Bird

Encore: You’ve Got Hide Your Love Away, Yer Blues, I Wanna Be Your Man (1st time played)

Wednesday Setlist

Charlie Hunter: New Album & Dates

PUBLIC DOMAIN OUT NOW

Charlie Hunter

Charlie Hunter has just
released his second solo outing, Public Domain. Not since Solo Eight-String Guitar a
decade ago has Charlie made a recording of just him and his guitar. This time, he’s down to 7-strings and is
performing songs that are all public domain. The songs were all hand-picked by Charlie’s grandfather. “I was into
doing a solo record for some time and just hit on the public domain idea. I figured I’d ask someone who actually
remembered the tunes from his youth: My grandfather, Sidney Greenman. He was born in 1911 (yep, he’s 99). He
helped pick the tunes for me. I recorded this in a day at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn. Everything is live, there is
no editing. Hope you like.”

Pick up an exclusive CD copy of Public Domain only available here. It is also available for download at iTunes and all major digital distribution
retailers. Also pick up both a t-shirt and ‘Public Domain’ CD for a discounted price in Charlie’s Store.

Bob Dylan To Play The Warfield in San Francisco

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 25; NO ADVANCE TICKETS; CASH ONLY

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan and his Band will
play The
Warfield
in San Francisco for the first time in nearly twenty years on Wednesday, August 25.

All tickets are general admission and will be available at The Warfield box office on the day of the show only. No
advance tickets will be available anywhere for this performance. Admission to the show is $60 cash. No credit cards
or checks will be accepted.

The box office and the doors will open at 5:30 pm on August 25 with show time at 8 pm. Ticketholders will enter
the venue immediately at the time of purchase, one ticket per customer. Line-ups will begin no earlier than noon on
day of performance.

Goldenvoice Vice President of Booking, David Lefkowitz said, “Given the state of touring and how fees
have
escalated, it was a real breath of fresh air to do something very consumer oriented by eliminating all ticketing
charges, it’s almost a throwback to another time. It’s been almost twenty years since Bob Dylan played The Warfield
and in my opinion, he is an artist that needs no big promotions or hoopla. He comes, he plays, and it’s an incredible
experience.”

Jerry Garcia Honored At Giants Game In San Francisco

The San Francisco Giants hosted a tribute to the late great Jerry Garcia during last night’s game vs. the
Chicago Cubs at AT&T Park in honor of
the 15 year anniversary of the Grateful Dead guitarist’s death.

The evening included many Dead-oriented activities, including the giveaway of Garcia Bobblehead dolls; the cover
band Cryptical performing
“Shakedown Street” and “Touch of Grey” before the game; Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Jeff Pehrson
singing the National Anthem; and Billy Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart and Bill Walton leading the
crowd in a Guinness Book of World Records kazoo-infused rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the
seventh inning stretch. Jerry’s family was on hand for the event with his daughter Annabel Garcia throwing
out the first pitch and saying a few words about her father.

The evening benefited The Rex
Foundation
, which was founded by the Grateful Dead to support worthy non-profit organizations.

The Giants beat the Cubs 4-3 in the 11th inning.

Dr. Dog | 04.25 | San Francisco

Words by: Justin Gillett | Images by: Josh Miller

Dr. Dog :: 04.25.10 :: Great American Music Hall :: San Francisco, CA

Dr. Dog :: 04.25 :: S.F.

After releasing six albums over the better part of the past decade, with the most recent being Shame, Shame, the Philadelphia-based quintet Dr. Dog has yet to truly affirm itself as a momentous studio band. All the group’s LPs are mildly respectable, but none of the releases truly capture the band’s live character. The band’s ardent performances highlight each musician’s ability to play off one another and carry out the band’s impressive harmonies.

During the nostalgic indie rock outfit’s recent two-night layover in San Francisco, Dr. Dog was able to sell out both nights at the Great American Music Hall, an admirable feat for any group, considering S.F. is home to a good amount of smug music snobs who consider obscure forms of brash noise to be the apex of musical artistry.

As the dogged musicians took the stage and immediately locked in with one another it was made clear that the deep interplay between the members is the band’s selling point. Vocals were traded between guitarists Scott McMicken and Frank McElroy, as well as bassist Toby Leaman, and the group’s blissed out harmony arrangements sounded strong. The guys don’t necessarily sing extremely similar – Leaman’s raspy howl is a vast departure from McMicken’s mellow croon – but the pairing works and the divergent vocal styles complement each other.

An auxiliary multi-instrumentalist was recently added to the band’s live show, and he would occasionally trigger electronic samples, tap percussion devices, hit triggered drum pads and strum an acoustic guitar. While his presence added small nuanced layers to the band’s already full sound, he seemed little more than a glorified tambourine shaker and didn’t really contribute much to the group’s refined sound.

Playing hollow body guitars through a few vintage sounding effects, both McMicken and McElroy added impressive layers of feedback-fueled noise to the band’s pop-friendly tunes. Though the instrumental sections managed to propel the music, when the group added its characteristic three-part harmonies the music really shined. The teamwork of the guitarists also served to bolster many of the songs, and whenever McMicken or McElroy took a solo it was a joint effort. Both guitarists would read one another and play off each other, creating an awesome amalgamation of sound that further fueled the band’s lush grooves.

When the band left the stage after its 75-minute set, the crowd was still thirsty for more Dog, and the group obliged fans with an impressive five-song encore. Aptly concluding the show with “California” off the 2006 Takers and Leavers EP, Dr. Dog managed to, again, prove its worth as a live band and leave a lasting impression in the minds of all in attendance.

Sometimes it helps with our favorite bands to step back for a spell. Without some distance, they can only be so fresh to us; their changing angles obscured by what we’ve seen and want to see. Tea Leaf Green was one of the first bands I wrote about when I got serious about music scribing eight years ago. Then, playing tiny clubs and searching for their sound, I heard shit-tons of promise, and there’s not many more charming quartets on the planet – something felt in their easy-to-like music and smiling, seemingly effortless stage demeanor. Dramatic personnel changes, a few hundred new songs and countless nights honing them in front of sweaty, happy people have worn away the baby fat to reveal one of the sturdiest American rock bands out there, a group capable of playing multi-night runs at quality theatres like the Great American Music Hall. Having spent many months away from their concerts, I arrived in S.F. open to whatever might unfold. Based on this gig’s resounding evidence, they’ve fully coalesced, a classic four-piece rock combo with talent, tunes and tenacity to spare.

Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers played a lovely opening set to a sparse but increasingly enthusiastic early evening crowd. There’s the pull of flames for moths to Bluhm and her tight, thoughtful boys. One simply wants to move nearer when they ply their newfangled country rock meets skipping pop sound. The initial draw, obviously, is Bluhm’s powerhouse voice and charming phrasing. Don’t even bother trying not to stare or reveal your shock when the full force of her pipes hits you. But, she’s not up there alone, and The Gramblers play with brilliant economy, giving just as much and no more as each moment requires, exemplified by the tasty, leave-them-wanting-more guitar work of Deren Ney. New one “Jet Plane” had the together oomph of electric Fairport Convention and raises hopes pretty high for their forthcoming new album. My money says they deliver and then some.

Tea Leaf’s first set put a shadowy hue on their trademark bounce. Where once they were defined by their “California” feel (nicely revisited in S.F. with “Panspermic De-evolution”), here their collective reach touched on bloody nosed hard rock, jam flexibility, prime ’70s singer-songwriter fare and post-Wilco pop-rock. I’ve always liked them a touch heavier than some TLG faithful, and this gig let the clouds rain strong even though they always ultimately resurfaced into sunlight. Looking Unabomber chic, bassist Reed Mathis possessed a hairy intensity, a powerful aura that silently infiltrated the others, particularly in the grand-fab-tab-u-lous second set, which ranked amongst the very best TLG sets I’ve ever witnessed.

“Weird,” “psychedelic,” “heavy” and “intense” were some of the adjectives folks pulled out around me, yet none of it hints at how much forward motion and honest reflection lies at the heart of their music. For as much fun as one is likely to have at a Tea Leaf Green show, there is something decidedly more profound afoot. TLG is a dance hall band that slips emotion-triggering mementos into your pocket while you’re lost in the smoke, volume and flashing stage lights. It’s only the next day that one really appreciates the full measure of the experience, and it’s that lingering satisfaction that brings one back again and again.
