Falling out of style
I wonder how Giorgetto Giugiaro really feels about seeing the ItalDesign company he spent forty years building as part of a global automaker?
He’ll surely be hoping it’ll have a better future than another Carozzerie that he headed before setting up ItalDesign in 1968 – Ghia.
From 1965 to ’67, Giugiaro, then a young, rising star of the car industry, was appointed head of design for Ghia – a company at the time most famous for a VW model, the Beetle-based Karmann Ghia coupe. Changes of ownership at Ghia meant Giugiaro’s tenure was brief. By 1970, Ghia had become a division of a major car company – Ford.
Oddly, in the same week that VW announced the ItalDesign deal, Ford announced that it had killed the Ghia sub-brand in the UK, saying it had run its course.
While the Ghia studio in Turin remains part of the Ford empire, the Ghia brand was very soon relegated to little more than a top-line trim level. Successfully too, for 30 years and counting, through various generations of Granadas, Cortinas, Escorts and Fiestas. Ghia meant plush velour seats instead of vinyl. The vinyl went on the roof, of course.
Ghia trim had come to stand for fake wood and a soft ride – certainly not the image Ford wants to project, in the UK at least. Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo have all lost their Ghia versions over the past year or so, and the last of the Ghia-badged Galaxy models will be gone any day now.
“It’s served us very well – but we’re in a new decade and we’ve got to show people we’re doing something a little bit different,” said Ford of Britain marketing director Mark Simpson.
In its place is Titanium, a more modern and youthful sub-brand, but pitched above Ghia in terms of specification, so as not to alienate the older buyer more accustomed to a Ghia.
“The Ghia customer wanted luxury and more appointment. Titanium is more modern – though we had to satisfy older customers – we didn’t want to follow Oldsmobile and reinvent the brand, but lose all our existing customers,” Simpson said. The plan seems to be working. Take-up of Titanium trim is much greater. “On old Fiesta, we sold 3% Ghia, but with the new Fiesta, Titanium take-up is over 20%,” he added.
Ghia trim lives on in many European markets, however, but the studio was reconfigured as an “virtual design centre” in 2002 – its last tangible contribution to the Ford range was the Streetka cabrio of a few years back.
It’s a bit of a waste, really – considering what might have been. In 1964, Ghia even tried to become a supercar brand of its own, creating a beautiful Chrysler-powered coupe called the L6.4 (the name relates to the size of its 6.4-litre V8 engine).
It’s a rare car, but a familiar one– how many 40-somethings had the Corgi Toys model of the L6.4 in the ’60s, complete with the little corgi dog on the parcel shelf? Coolbear certainly had one (and probably still has it somewhere) and as a young lad often wondered why he never saw a real one on the streets of Blackpool.
Probably something to do with the total production run – just 25 were built. Customers included Frank Sinatra. But he preferred Vegas to the Golden Mile…
Saturday Eye Candy: Willie Nelson
HAPPY 77TH BIRTHDAY, RED HEADED STRANGER!!!
Willie Nelson is a treasure, pure and simple. One of the strongest, coolest voices to ever emerge from the country world, Nelson is also a ferociously talented guitarist, top notch songwriter, tireless performer and an inspired interpreter of other’s material on par with greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Yesterday, Willie turned 77-years-old and we couldn’t let the occasion pass without tipping our hat to him. In his honor, we’ve rolled up a sampling of some choice moments in his long, long career. Damn, we’re glad we’ve shared this past near-century with you, mister!
We begin with a smoking version of one of Willie’s most beloved songs.
Beneath the braids and clouds of smoke, Nelson can be one smooth character. He draws from Brazilian and tango strains on this number, which features Emmylou Harris.
No salute to Willie would be complete without this one, but we’re gonna let his friend and fellow Highwayman handle this one. Nifty, slightly melancholy reading.
The man really sings about drinking very, very well.
Willie has done his part to keep the tradition of cowboy songs alive. Here he is with pal Johnny Cash singing one of the finest trail tunes ever.
It’s not just for Muppets anymore! This is the sort of thing that makes Willie an adored icon across MANY generations.
Here’s “The Lost Highwaymen” – Keith Richards, Hank Williams III, Ryan Adams and Willie – doing a Stones classic.
Willie has done duets with nearly every noteworthy singer of the past 50 years. He seems to live and breath when entwining his voice with another’s, but as far afield as he’s roamed, this pairing with Sinead O’Connor on Peter Gabriel’s tune couldn’t have been predicted.
Nelson has made a number of films but this is the only one with Morgan Fairchild.
We wrap with a little ditty that Patsy Cline made famous but Willie penned. Classic stuff, but one can say that about a lot of things with Willie.

Sat Eye Candy: Badfinger
A SMALL SALUTE TO THE ONE-TIME HEIRS APPARENT TO THE BEATLES
35 years on many classic rock fans still feel a slight pang to think of the sad suicide of Pete Ham, the brilliant but troubled lightning rod at the center of Badfinger. Today marks the anniversary of Ham’s death, but rather than mull over that mortality shaking idea, we’d rather celebrate some of the most enduring music to come out of a period hardly short in enduring music. There were a lot of reasons that all four members of The Beatles enthusiastically signed Badfinger (originally named The Iveys) to Apple Records in 1968 – the first non-Beatles to join the label. Ham possessed an emotion drenched, one-of-a-kind voice and the whole band tossed off hooks and harmonies that sunk into listeners with a quickness. Badfinger’s legacy of rock solid musicianship, pop savvy, killer vocals and high level craftsmanship lives on in groups like The Mother Hips, Wilco, Big Light and innumerable others. While his surviving mates have, to one degree or another, carried on making music, today we raise our glass to Pete Ham, whose music continues to inspire and entertain long after he left us.
In many ways, “No Matter What,” originally released as a single in 1970 and still a staple of AOR radio, is THE definition of power pop heaven.
“I guess I got what I deserved,” is one of the finest opening lines you might find, a bit of stinging self-recrimination that hits home instantly. This one continues to haunt rockers, showing up in covers by Aimee Mann, Phil Keaggy and many others.
This Badfinger weepie put Harry Nilsson on the charts and long ago entered the melodramatic singer hall-of-fame (where it’s been handled to varying degrees since by Mariah Carey, Frank Sinatra, and numerous American Idol contestants), but we like it best with Ham singing.
Ham had a knack for laying his heart bare in his love songs, and none were more potent than this three-minute marvel.
Here’s a 1973 rehearsal of one of the group’s deep album cuts. Exploration of their catalog, particularly their first four records, will reveal a lot of gems that weren’t singles but fly nearly as high as their better known material.
You know you’ve got some serious mojo when George Harrison invites you up to play an acoustic duet on one of his signature tunes in front of a packed Madison Square Garden. This version of “Here Comes The Sun” is one of the lovelier, quieter moments from Harrison’s landmark Concert For Bangladesh.
Ham was a pretty badass guitarist, as evidenced by this wah-wah addled romp through bandmate Joey Molland‘s boffo “Suitcase” off arguably their finest album, No Dice.
We conclude with Ham at the piano cracking open the human condition with real poetry. You are dearly missed by some of us, Pete. Hope you found peace wherever you may be.

PHOSPHORESCENT ON TOUR WITH DAVID GRAY THIS SPRING
Phosphorescent |
Last fall, Phosphorescent bassist Jeff Bailey was watching a primetime news show when British songwriter David Gray appeared for an interview. The interviewer inquires as to what Gray is listening to on his iPod and he responds, “Frank Sinatra, and an album called Pride by Phosphorescent.”
Admittedly skeptical, the band did a quick internet search and found Gray singing the praises of Phosphorescent to Entertainment Weekly and a Spin review of a David Gray performance, which mentions that Gray opened the show by “emerging from the darkness to the narcotic strains of Phosphorescent’s ‘Cocaine Lights’.”
A month or so passes when an email shows up in the inbox of Phosphorescent’s Matthew Houck from Gray himself, with enthusiastic support for the music and an open ended invitation to open any of Gray’s upcoming tour dates. Phosphorescent accepted the invite and will soon be hitting the road with Gray throughout the United States and Europe.
Phosphorescent is also nearly complete with their upcoming album; details will be announced very soon.
Check out a video of the band performing “A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise” at the American Songwriter Magazine offices here.
