Girl Talk: Extensive 2011 Tour
2011 SHOWS BEGIN IN CLEVELAND IN JANUARY
“Mr. Gillis aims to please. His music is a collage of hits, recent and old, that are instantly recognizable to just about everyone in the crowd. Each one – from Jay-Z to Styx to the Ramones to Missy Elliott to Nirvana – draws a cheer within a few notes. Mr. Gillis samples the songs’ obvious hooks. He isn’t a hipster showing off how deeply he’s dug into his collection; he’s a fellow fan, reactivating remembered pop pleasures.” – Jon Pareles, The New York Times
With almost 300 shows under his belt, and hardly a full week off, since Feed The Animals was released in June 2008 and Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) has announced another 40-city tour, all set to take place in 2011 before March is even over!

Jazz Fest 4.30 Fri | Photos & Best Of
Words by: Tom Speed | Images by: Dino Perrucci
Jazz Fest – Weekend 2 – Day 2 :: 04.30.10 :: Friday :: New Orleans, LA
Kermit Ruffins :: 04.30.10 :: Jazz Fest |
The best laid plans aren’t worth a damn. Repeatedly, the ad hoc yields the sweetest fruit. Days like Friday, April 30 at the Jazz Festival reinforce this truth time and time again.
The giddiness rears its head when the cubes are published. Hours pored over scheduling increases excitement. When the day comes, it’s irrelevant. A well-planned and structured itinerary is no substitute for a day of happy accidents and splendid surprises. With the rain staying away despite the weatherman’s best attempts to doom and gloom the otherwise optimistic, a gentle fairgrounds-wide mist tent effect cast a pleasant ambiance over a day filled with brilliant unplanned pleasure. To wit:
Tom’s Top Three Aural
#1 Allen Toussaint (Acura Stage)
Allen Toussaint was a contributing factor in the best set of the day on Thursday and helmed the best set on Friday. He’s New Orleans royalty, and his mid-afternoon performance on the Acura Stage proved why. Exuding class and professionalism, Toussaint’s top-notch band (including the resplendent Theresa Andersson as one of the background vocalists) radiated confidence as they spun the sounds Toussaint helped birth many moons ago. Touching on standards and mainstays, they were at times funky, soulful, and moving. Giving “City of New Orleans” a twist that removed any sense of cliche was a mean feat that was handled adroitly, and the sprawling “Southern Nights” closer was awe-inspiring fun.
#2 Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys (Fais Do-Do Stage)
The infectious zydeco groove commands your dancing, your swaying, and your shuffling. The onstage capabilities grab your respect. When the band was joined by three trombonists from Bonerama, it underscored the wide swath that the music at Jazz Fest covers and cross-pollinates at the same time.
#3 Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra (Louisiana Heritage Stage)
A loose amalgamation of Mardi Gras Indian tribesmen and various interested instrumentalists, the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra celebrates this musical tradition with the addition of a string section and a cavalcade of participants, including Reggie and Camille of The Radiators.
Tom’s Top Three Gustatory
#1 Fried Chicken
Like playing guitar, making fried chicken is easy to do competently but takes real talent to do exceptionally. The fine folks at Jazz Fest have talent.
#2 William’s Plum Street Snowballs
The nectar cream snowball could easily be classified a Schedule IV narcotic.
#3 Coors in a can
Here’s a fun game: try to drink the whole can before the “cold activated” thingy turns from blue to gray. It’s tough in the New Orleans heat, but practice makes perfect. Or something like that.
Tom’s Top Three Lagniappe
#1 Eric Lindell
The overflowing crowd at the Blues Tent before and during Lindell’s set rendered the situation unsympathetic to mellowing out to his groovy vibe. It’s great that he’s catching on with so many new fans, but it’s well past time to put him on a main stage. Ya heard?
#2 Pinwheels
They’re a highly underrated form of entertainment. Just sayin’.
#3 Celebrating your wife’s birthday with her at Jazz Fest
Every year. It’s one hell of a birthday party.

Infamous Stringdusters: New Album & Tour Dates
THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS TO RELEASE THINGS THAT FLY APRIL 20
The Infamous String Busters |
About the most important question a young bluegrass band faces right out of the gate is whether they can play. The Infamous Stringdusters wasted no time in providing their answer — an emphatic yes — winning IBMA Album, Song and Emerging Artist of the Year in 2007, the same year they released their debut, Fork In the Road.
On Things That Fly, their third album, due out April 20 on Sugar Hill, the band ventures into virtually uncharted territory for an acoustic group: a sonically and thematically expansive album that lends itself to absorbed listening from start to finish, much like the great rock albums do.
Holed up in the Charlottesville, VA studio Haunted Hollow, with significant pre-production under their belts and Gary Paczosa (Nickel Creek, Dixie Chicks, Tim O’Brien) on board as engineer and co-producer, the ‘Dusters did things they’d never done before: guitarist Andy Falco put his hidden keyboard talents to use on smoldering organ parts; voices and instruments alike were splashed with reverb; and, though the band has no shortage of quality lead singers in fiddler Jeremy Garrett, dobro player Andy Hall and upright bassist Travis Book, a few fine-singing friends added novel tones, including country standout Dierks Bentley, Americana songwriter-chanteuse Sarah Siskind and Crooked Still frontwoman Aoife O’Donovan.
Factor in that every member of the band — rounded out by de facto tour videographer Chris Pandolfi (banjo) and Jesse Cobb (mandolin) — is a stylish, consummate picker with a hardly strictly bluegrass background, as well as a skilled songwriter, and you see that this band is genuinely built for breadth. “We wanted to make sure everyone had writing input on the record,” Hall relates. “We’d never done that before, and it’s a lot of why we started the band.”
Surprising covers, unusual arrangements and other departures from the expected make Things That Fly something different – namely a sign that they’ve elevated their sound and set their sights higher than ever before.

Fri Playlist: Instrumental Gold
SOMETIMES NO WORDS ARE NECESSARY
In February the Friday Playlist series will be exploring instrumental flavors of many kinds. We’re probing into what stories can be told sans words, and begin this week with a hauntingly beautiful piece from Armenian duduk master Djivan Gasparian and travel through jazz and electronica spaces with the likes of Robert Walter, Four Tet and Tortoise, while taking excursions with past masters like Yusuf Lateef and Astor Piazzola. We hope this helps soundtrack some fine moments for you folks this weekend.
And check out our The Rock Life (Pt. 3) Playlist from last week, with touring world insights from Boston, Skynyrd, Backyard Tire Fire and more! Playlist assembled by JamBase Associate Editor Dennis Cook, who is rarely at a loss for wordsÂ… |

EOTO HIT THE ROAD IN FEBRUARY, MARCH AND APRIL
EOTO |
Electro-duo EOTO – Jason Hann and Michael Travis – will be hitting the road this February, March and April for a tour that includes multiple stops in Colorado, California and Oregon, among others.
Performed with all of the bells and whistles of a traditional electronic artist plus the addition of live drums, vocals, bass and guitar, EOTO creates each and every bass ridden noise right before your eyes – without the addition of a single pre-recorded track. Known for their completely improvised live performance, the duo is breaking ground into a new sub culture of music while standing against some of the nations best live DJ’s in the country.

Fri Playlist: The Rock Life (Pt. 3)
IT’S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP IF YOU WANNA ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
We conclude our January showcase of songs about road life, the music biz, and the experience of being on stages with some “classics” of the genre from Boston, Journey, two Leon Russell penned gems (“Superstar” and “A Song For You”), and more. It’s a rich rock tradition – i.e. self-referential, vaguely jaded, semi-autobiographical tunes – we’re happy to explore with you.
And check out our The Rock Life (Pt. 2) Playlist, with touring world insights from Bob Weir, Arctic Monkeys, Jimmy Buffett and more! Playlist assembled by JamBase Associate Editor Dennis Cook, whose pretty much favorite people in the whole wide world are working musicians and their alliesÂ… |

CIRCUS LIFE UNDER THE BIG TOP WORLD

We continue our January showcase of songs about road life, the music biz, and the experience of being on stages. It’s a rich rock tradition – i.e. self-referential, vaguely jaded, semi-autobiographical tunes – we’re happy to explore with you.
This week finds touring ennui from Jimmy Buffett, Rick Nelson and Bob Weir, alongside more modern discontent from the stage delivered by the Arctic Monkeys and Splitsville. There’s also a couple bonafide classics in this rock subset from Steely Dan and Stealers Wheel (yes, kids, they did more songs than “Stuck In The Middle With You”). We wrap up with the Patti Smith Group‘s wonderful reworking of The Byrds’ staple, which declares, “This is the era where everybody creates!” and we begin with the too-short-lived Imperial Drag, one of the best post-Jellyfish outfits Roger Joseph Manning Jr. has been involved in.
Once again, we encourage you to raise your beer mugs and disposable lighters to the heavens for the hard working musicians that do that voodoo that they do so well.
And check out our The Rock Life (Pt. 1) Playlist, with touring world insights from Thin Lizzy, Elton John, Backyard Tire Fire and more! Playlist assembled by JamBase Associate Editor Dennis Cook, whose pretty much favorite people in the whole wide world are working musicians and their alliesÂ… |
Fri Playlist: The Rock Life (Pt. 1)
LOVE AND A MUSIC MAN AIN’T ALWAYS WHAT IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE
![]() |
After spending the better part of a week with folks trying to shake a dollar out of the music business on Jam Cruise, JamBase was poignantly reminded that it ain’t easy being in a band. So, the Friday Playlists in January will showcase songs about road life, the recording industry, and the experience of being on stages. It’s a rich rock tradition – i.e. self-referential, vaguely jaded, semi-autobiographical songs – and much like theatre pieces focused on theatre life, there’s pleasure and insight to be had, even when things get a touch cheesy.
Our first dozen entries tap into some quality ’70s ennui from Linda Ronstadt (covering James Taylor), Rockpile and Elton John, as well as killer contemporary contributions to the “rock songs about rock” canon from Backyard Tire Fire and The Drams, plus two overlooked classics from Lynyrd Skynyrd and Goose Creek Symphony. There’s also a bit of unbridled exuberance from Eddie Money, Black Oak Arkansas and Thin Lizzy, because it’s got to be enjoyable sometimes or no one would stuff themselves into a beat-up van like some musical clown car and bring the show to our towns. Thank the Lord above that there’s hard working souls willing to endure the “long way to the top.” And don’t worry, we’ll get to Journey, Dr. Hook and other masters of this subject matter in the next couple weeks. For now, slip a coin into the jukebox and give these a spin.
