Facebook Oct. 23 created a toggle switch between its News Feed and Live Feed, trying to improve the user experience on the homepage. The changes sparked criticism over the weekend from several users, who vented in Facebook Groups such as I Automatically Hate The New Facebook Home Page group, as well as in the comments section of news stories. Over the weekend, several users wrote to complain that the changes were confusing or annoying. Others, however, accepted the changes. Facebook is welcoming feedback, but there seems to be no plans to change the service back at present. What do you think of the homepage changes?

Exercise and company: Fitter with friends

Exercising in a group can be more effective by making things easier

THE enduring image of Sylvester Stallone’s legendary pugilist Rocky Balboa is that of a solitary athlete, braving the elements (and his own demons) to prepare for a fight. Yet according to a new study he might have done better by having a bit of company on his long workouts.

Research by Emma Cohen, an anthropologist at Oxford University, suggests that a better model is provided by Hicham El Guerrouj, a Moroccan middle-distance runner who is the current holder of the world 1,500-metres and one-mile records. Before retiring in 2006 Mr El Guerrouj was known for the throngs of training partners that followed him everywhere in Morocco. This was a good strategy because, as Dr Cohen reports in a forthcoming issue of Biology Letters, training in a synchronised group may heighten tolerance for pain. That, in turn, could allow athletes like Mr El Guerrouj to train longer and harder. …

Marketing on social networks: Friends for sale

What is a Facebook friend worth?

ONLINE social networks are handy not just as a means of wasting time but also as a communications tool for business. Dell, a computer-maker, has made $3m in sales from Twitter since it started “tweeting” about its outlet that sells refurbished computers in 2007. Marketers are eager to use fast-growing networks to tout their products. An Australian online-marketing company, uSocial, wants to help them—for a price. On September 16th the firm started selling Facebook friends and fans.

After trawling Facebook for users by criteria like age, location and interests, uSocial then recommends potential friends to companies, who approach them directly. A firm pays $727 for each 5,000 users who agree to be its friend, or 15 cents each. “Fans”, who merely express support for a firm, are cheaper. …

Friends in low places

Hugo Chavez dreams of forging a new world order

THE mountains and jungles of South America are not ideal terrain for tank warfare. So it is hard to envisage what role Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez, has in mind for the dozens of Russian tanks on his latest military shopping list. The strategic purpose of a recent tour that took him to some of the world’s least salubrious regimes is, however, easier to discern. And it led America’s State Department to give warning on Monday September 14th of a “serious challenge to stability” in the region.

Venezuela’s increasingly autocratic leader returned on Friday from a trip that took him to Libya, Iran, Algeria, Syria, Turkmenistan, Belarus and Russia, though he also found time for a visit Spain and the Venice film festival. On his jaunt he was decorated by Libya’s leader, Muammar Qaddafi, and embraced by Aleksandr Lukashenko, president of Belarus. …

Facebook Lite Now Available, as Facebook Lets Friends Play Tag

Facebook unleashes Tornado, launches Facebook Lite in the U.S. and India (English only) and begins to roll out a @ tagging tool to help users better connect. Lite’s news feed lets users write, post photos and videos, but unlike the fatter Facebook, there is no toolbar for enabling access to Facebook Pages, Status Updates, Photos and Links. Lite’s profile pages are leaner, too. Meanwhile, when users want to add a friend’s name in status updates and other posts from the Facebook Publisher, they can include the @ symbol before that friend’s name.

Facebook can brag of a busy Sept. 10, 2009.
The social network released the FriendFeed Web server to open source, which readers can learn more about
here. The company also launched its Facebook Lite version and began rolling out
a new tagging feature for the site.

Big drug firms embrace generics: Friends for life

Big pharmaceutical firms are learning to love their erstwhile enemies, makers of generic drugs

ONE recent evening, the most powerful man in the world posed an existential question to those around him. “If there’s a blue pill and a red pill, and the blue pill is half the price of the red pill and works just as well, why not pay half the price for the thing that’s going to make you well?” Thus Barack Obama captured one of two powerful global trends forcing pharmaceutical giants to look for a new business model.

Cost-conscious governments everywhere are bashing pricey patented drugs even as they boost cheap generics. In the past few weeks regulators in America and the European Union have announced separate crackdowns on anti-competitive practices, including “pay-for-delay” deals, whereby big drugmakers pay generics firms to delay the launch of competitors to drugs coming off patent. From Japan to Germany, governments are liberalising drug markets, sweeping away barriers to generics. …
