FTC Sues Intel over Anticompetitive Behavior

The FTC filed suit against Intel over anticompetitive acts that regulators say not only were meant to stifle competition from AMD, but also are now being used against GPU maker Nvidia. The lawsuit comes a month after Intel settled with AMD for $1.25 billion, an agreement that some industry analysts felt would curtail the FTCs probe into Intel.

The Federal Trade Commission revises rules for advertisers on how to keep their endorsement and testimonial ads in line with the FTC Act and for the first time requires bloggers to disclose any material connections they share with the seller of the product or service.

Google Bows to FTC, Creates Privacy Policy for Google Books

Google, which had refused to create a privacy policy for Google Book Search unless and until it was approved by a court, bowed to public pressure from the FTC. Meanwhile, Denny Chin, the judge weighing whether to approve the Google Book Search settlement for a U.S. District Court in New York, has extended the deadline for parties to support or oppose the deal from Sept. 4 to Sept. 8 because of computer maintenance in the court.

Consumer Advocates Ask FTC to Help Curb Behavioral Targeting Tactics

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft employ behavioral targeting, in which cookies collect information on users’ Web browsing habits, to better tailor online ad campaigns to consumers. This practice doesn’t sit well with consumer and privacy advocates, which are urging Congress to crack down on behavioral targeting and the Federal Trade Commission to set up a registry to help users opt out of such practices.

Consumer Advocates Exhort DOJ, FTC to Scrutinize Microsoft-Yahoo Deal

The Center for Digital Democracy and Consumer Watchdog urge the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission to look closely to make sure the at the proposed Microsoft-Yahoo search deal does not violate antitrust laws or citizens’ privacy rights.
