Total assets managed by fund managers in Singapore rose 40% to $1.21 trillion last year, above the pre-crisis peak of $1.17 trillion in 2007, the central bank said on Friday.

Aviva Investors to expand in Asia, Singapore asset management: Update

Aviva Investors, the asset management arm of British insurer Aviva (AV.L), plans to expand in Asia-Pacific by hiring bond and equity fund managers in Singapore and setting up a sales offices in Japan. 

Aviva Investors intends to set up a regional asset management firm in Singapore and will hire 25-30 people to build up its equities and fixed income investment capabilities, Asia Pacific CEO Craig Bingham told reporters in Singapore.

‘Double-dip’ risk for global economy remains: Tharman

Singapore’s economy should remain prepared for the risk of a “double-dip” in the world economy in 2010, its finance minister said today.

“(We) have to be prepared for the possibility of a sluggish world economy or even a double-dip in 2010,” Tharman Shanmugaratnam said in a speech to mark the Singapore Exchange’s (SGXL.SI) 10th anniversary.

He also said that assets of 20 largest fund managers in Singapore grew 23% in the first half of 2009.

Overall assets for the asset management industry declined by 26% to $864 billion in 2008 from a year earlier, he said.
