Apple iPad: A Look from the Inside Out

The moment the Apple iPad went on sale April 3, the RapidRepair team began tearing one down for a closer look at its lesser-known perks and flaws. What they found, RapidRepair CEO Aaron Vronko told eWEEK, surprised them for both what Apple included and left out. For example, the battery was impressively evolved from the battery of the iPhone 3G S, but on-board memory was 256MB, not the expected 512MB currently inside the Motorola Droid and Nexus One. Additionally, Vronko noted an area that seemed deliberately designed for a camera in a future model, and was impressed with the iPads build quality, calling it outstanding. The following images, courtesy of Rapid Repair, offer a how-to on iPad dissection.

10 iPhone Navigation Apps for Your Next Driving Adventure

Sometimes you need a little help getting from points A to B, something a number of developers realized when they began designing navigation apps for the iPhone. Many of these apps take advantage of the GPS chipset embedded in the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3G S, which allows for turn-by-turn directions and easy viewing of local points of interest. Other apps, including Google Earth, focus primarily on actual maps as opposed to step-by-step directions. Many of these apps attempt to justify their high costs with that GPS integration and high-quality renderings, as well as a host of secondary features such as lane assistant. For those who dont want to spend quite so much on apps, or dont need that many gee-whiz features, a few of these options are notably cheaper.

New LG, Samsung Smartphones Emphasize Social Skills, Thinness

Samsung and LG Electronics have each introduced new smartphones with an emphasis on sleek design and social networking. At just 11mm thick, however, the LG Mini – which LG described as the smallest and slimmest 3.2-inch full touch-screen phone on the market today – may have turned some heads away from the 12.4mm-thick Samsung Monte. The Google Nexus One, at 11.5mm thin, has also been celebrated for its size, which can make the Apple iPhone 3G S, at 12.3mm, appear a bit portly. At the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, Korea-based Inbrics introduced the MID M1, an Android-running mobile Internet device it calls smartphonelike and that, with a slide-out keyboard, measures just 13.85mm thin. Check out the new phones in this eWEEK slideshow.

10 Products That Must Be Killed In 2010

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to think back at all the products, applications, and other goodies that made 2009 such a great year for those who follow the tech industry. That grouping of viable products was headlined by Snow Leopard, Windows 7, the new and improved iPhone 3G S, and more. It was generally a great year for the tech industry.

But that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some products that left us wishing for more. Some hardware devices that survived through 2009 failed to live up to the hype. Software applications that have lingered for too long still haunted us in 2009. As good as some of the offerings were this year, there were still others that shouldn’t make it to 2010.

This eWEEK slide show looks at ten software and hardware products that deserve to die in 2010. These products weren’t necessarily released in 2009, but they certainly made a mark in the industry at some point during the year. And for many of these products, that mark was far less than ideal.
