Profit gain in Singapore bunkers may jump 24%: energy markets

The profit traders can get from selling shipping fuel in Singapore, the world’s second-busiest container port, may rise 24% in 2011 after the worst slump in at least two years, a Bloomberg News survey showed.

Sellers of 380-centistoke fuel oil, or bunkers, will receive an average US$4.20 ($5.37) a metric ton more than what they pay for the cargoes in Singapore this year, according to the median estimate in a survey of six traders conducted Jan. 24-27. The difference, known as the bunkers premium, shrank to an average US$3.40 a ton last year from US$5.92 in 2009 and $12.14 in 2008, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Cosco Corp may gain if parent injects assets – DBS Vickers

Cosco Corp. (F83.SG) may gain if parent Cosco Group transfers its stake in two shipbuilding operations to the Singapore-listed company, DBS Vickers says in a report. 

The possibility of the parent injecting its stakes — 19% of Cosco Shipyard Group and all of Cosco Shipbuilding Industry, which owns two shipbuilding yards in Nantong and Dalian — could add 20% to Cosco Corp.’s bottomline, DBS Vickers says in a report Wednesday.

Singapore exports to gain on global recovery-action

Singapore’s December non-oil exports are broadly in line with consensus, with the strong rebound from the previous month signaling continued robust growth, says David Cohen of Action Economics after government data show seasonally-adjusted exports up 8.9% on-month after falling 13% on-month in November.

Lippo Karawaci makes 195b rupiah gain from asset sales

PT Lippo Karawaci posted an extraordinary gain of 195 billion rupiah ($28 million) from selling two hospitals to First Real Estate Investment Trust for US$160 million ($206.7 million), the Indonesian property developer said in a statement to the stock exchange dated yesterday.

First REIT is a Singapore-based real estate investment trust that is run by a fund management owned by Lippo and Bowsprit Capital Corp., the company said.

Keppel Land +1%; DBS Vickers tweaks FY10 view on MBFC gain

Keppel Land (K17.SG) +1.0% at $4.85, roughly in-line with broad market gain (STI +0.9%) with relatively thin volume of 1.2 million shares; suggests upwardly revised net gain from sale of stake in MBFC 1 to K-REIT (K71U.SG) — due to favorable advance tax ruling — not doing much to generate excitement.

DBS Vickers, which has Buy rating, $4.96 target, notes firm expected to realise net gain of $394 million compared to $321 million reported earlier.

Petra Foods posts 110% gain in 3Q net profit to $13.3m

Petra Foods, one of the world’s major manufacturers and suppliers of cocoa ingredients, says net profit attributable to shareholders in the third quarter ended 30 September 2010 (3Q 2010) rose 109.9% to US$10.3 million ($13.3 million) on the back of a 33.8% increase in sales to US$433.1 million.

This was boosted by higher sales volume, higher unit pricing and higher margins achieved by both its Cocoa Ingredients and Branded Consumer divisions. EBITDA improved 56.5% to US$27.7 million in the same period.

Neptune Orient shares gain after profit beats analyst estimates

Neptune Orient Lines, owner of Asia’s second-largest container company by capacity, gained the most two weeks in Singapore trading as higher freight rates and increased trade helped it report better-than-expected profit.

Neptune Orient rose 2.4%, set for the biggest advance since Oct. 6, to $2.11 as of 9:33 a.m. in Singapore. The stock was the best performer on the Straits Times Index.

Singapore retail sales excluding cars gain most in three months

Singapore’s retail sales excluding motor vehicles rose at the fastest pace in three months, a sign that consumer spending is holding up even as easing demand for the nation’s drugs and electronics hurt growth last quarter.

The index measuring purchases excluding automobiles climbed 6.2% from a year earlier in August, after gaining 6% in July, the Statistics Department said today. Including vehicles, which are sold subject to government caps, total retail sales fell 1.2 percent, less than the median forecast for a 5.3% decline in a Bloomberg News survey of 8 economists.

Singapore-listed Chinese shipbuilders may get boost as China unveils US$5 billion ($6.6 billion) fund to help Greek shipping companies buy Chinese vessels, says Dow Jones.

Move announced over weekend by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, deemed particularly beneficial for Cosco (F83.SG), Yangzijiang (BS6.SG), JES International (EG0.SG) as contracts from Greece, Europe make up significant part of their orderbooks.

STI may gain; Hongkong listing plays may be in focus

Singapore shares may still end higher on final day of September, despite Wall Street’s modest pullback, with prices propped up by last-minute window dressing as 3Q10 winds down, says Dow Jones.

Still, developers with China exposure may fall given Beijing’s new measures to curb property prices. Immediate resistance for STI, which closed +0.3% at 3,106.03 yesterday, at year-to-date high of 3,125, then 3,146 (higher end of breakdown gap formed in June 2008), with support at last week’s 3,069 low.

Developers with assets in the Marina Bay, Rochor and Tanjong Pagar areas like Keppel Land and UOL Group should continue to capture investor interest as more details about the Singapore-Malaysia historical land swap agreement emerge, says Nomura Singapore in a residential property report dated Sept 21.

On Sept 20, Singapore and Malaysia finalised an agreement to swap six land parcels in Singapore’s Marina Bay and Rochor districts for six sites in Singapore that are currently occupied by the KTM railway link between Singapore and Malaysia. The land parcels in Marina Bay and Rochor will be jointly developed by Malaysia and Singapore in a 60:40 JV.

STI may gain; Valuations support re-rating: DBS

Singapore shares may open higher given positive cue from Wall Street overnight, but intraday pullback can’t be ruled out with prices already at new 2010 highs, according to Dow Jones.

Resistance for STI, which closed +0.7% at 3,071.03 yesterday, at 3,100 (last breached in June 2008). Index +4.1% since beginning September.

“The STI is now at a new 52-week high. Expect some profit-taking either today or Friday,” says a dealer at local brokerage; tips support at 3,050.
