Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival :: 10.01.10-10.03.10 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco, CA

There are few Americana/string band gatherings as progressive and opened minded as the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF’s Golden Gate Park. With each passing year the lineup grows more diverse and more daring, creating an “anything goes” vibe that’s pretty infectious. And it don’t hurt that the whole thing is a free show. Longtime contributor and JamBase pal Dave Vann cherry picked his snaps for the sweetest fruit from this year’s installment.

Outside Lands 2010 Preview

By: Dennis Cook
JamBase Associate
Editor

Outside Lands :: 08.14.10-08.15.10 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco,
CA

For the third year in a row, Outside Lands will sprawl over the lush, rolling
landscape of iconic Golden Gate Park in a contemporized Golden State happening that
combines good music, fine wine and a distinctly West Coast sensibility. The organizers
wisely trimmed this from a three-day to a two-day festival and contracted the overall
hours a bit, too, starting later and ending earlier to accommodate the public
transportation needs of the vast majority of attendees. Once through the gates, this is a
classy, big city festival with quality headliners Furthur
(Saturday) and Kings of Leon (Sunday) alongside fest staples My Morning Jacket
(Saturday) and Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley (Sunday). This year will also introduce
the DJ/dance music Inspire area for those that must boogie, day or night. As for
the rest, we’ve cherry picked three sets from each day that should prick up your ears.

Saturday, August 14

1. The Whigs ::
12:00-12:40 PM :: Panhandle Solar Stage

There’s not a great deal of four-to-the-floor rock in this year’s assortment, with most of
the rollers tending towards alternative modern rather than bitchin’ Camaro in tone.
Athens, GA stalwarts The Whigs should set things on a fine trajectory for folks who start
their musical dance card with them on Saturday, peppering their more refined recent work
with messy outbursts full of flying hair, sweat and snarled spit as the music rips from
them in a fantastically real way.

</center

2. Levon Helm
Band
:: 3:45-4:35 PM :: Twin Peaks Stage

Seriously, what’s going on that could stop any serious music aficionado from spending a
little under an hour sitting at the heel of one of The Band’s co-founders and ostensibly
the spiritual keeper of that landmark group’s flame? No disrespect intended to anyone
else playing at this time but Helm is history. This is a time when many young people think
rock started with Nirvana and some of those bands their parents listen to. Levon helped
draft a blueprint that countless artists are still building upon, and while we’ve still
got the man it behooves us to give a listen whenever he hits a stage. Don’t be surprised
to see a gaggle of his fellow performers lurking in the wings during this set.

</center

3. Wild Beasts
:: 7:55-8:40 PM :: Panhandle Solar Stage

While most will be nestled into the Dead-y fog over at Furthur (7:25-9:55 PM – Lands End
Stage) or gettin’ popped NYC style at The Strokes (8:45-9:55 PM – Twin Peaks Stage), this emergent U.K. act
will be spinning webs of their own. Only two albums in and Wild Beasts have something of
their own brewing, and while it touches upon Echo & The Bunnymen, Stone Roses and other
countrymen past, their sound is flecked with original bits and an unforced swoon that’s
pretty dang neat.

</center

Sunday, August 15

1. Mayer Hawthorne
& The County
:: 1:30-2:10 PM :: Sutro Stage

The luscious strains of Curtis Mayfield, vintage Motown and Hall & Oates flow inside the
very easy to like grooves of Hawthorne and his large ensemble. This borders on nostalgia
but works nonetheless, maybe partially because Hawthorne looks all the part of a Buddy
Holly impersonator yet digs down deep for his heapingly satisfying blue-eyed soul.

</center

2. Garage A
Trois
:: 4:30-5:10 PM :: Panhandle Solar Stage

Four improvisational superheroes – Mike Dillon (percussion, muscle), Skerik
(saxophonics, general weirdness), Marco Benevento (keys, beard) and Stanton
Moore
(drums, mojo) – with ZERO fear and the curiosity of Peter Pan with a snoot full
o’ pixie snuff equals pure adventure music. Yes, Garage has compositions – some good
ones, too – but live all bets are off, no matter how many times one has seen them or
thinks they know what to expect. The unknown can be scary but it can also be way
cool. Garage A Trois is surely both.

</center

3. Social
Distortion
:: 6:55-7:45 PM :: Sutro Stage

Without always getting the name recognition they deserve, Social D has influenced a couple
generations of young rockers to do it hard, true and to tell their story, whatever
it may be. Mike Ness and co. are what punk looks like when it grows up but not
old. Go get an eyeful of the real deal amidst the tie-dye and yummy pinot.

Beach Boys Considering 50th Anniversary Reunion

WOULDN’T IT BE NICE

Former Beach Boys
singer/guitarist Al Jardine has told Rolling Stone that the legendary group will
reunite for a concert next year to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The lineup will include Jardine, Brian Wilson,
Mike
Love, Bruce Johnston
, and possibly early Beach Boys guitarist David Marks. Says Jardine, “We’re
definitely doing at least one
show — you heard it first. It’s a big deal. I don’t know where it will be yet, but it’ll probably be free. Golden Gate
Park was mentioned, as was the [National] Mall in Washington, D.C. and the north shore of Chicago by the beach.”

In the Rolling Stone article, Jardine also expresses hopes for a larger scale tour to follow: “I want to go all around the
world, but if this is the way it has to be, then so be it. We’re going to have to rehearse one hell of a show. My point
is, if we’re going to rehearse and make this such a wonderful show, we should take it on the road. It’s the next
logical step and it disappointments me that the other guys don’t see if that way. I mean, it really bothers me. I
know Live Nation has their fingers crossed we’ll hit the road. We’ve gone one show definite, so at least we’ve got our
foot in the door.”

Notorious for decades of infighting and lawsuits, relations between Jardine, lead singer Mike Love and
Brian Wilson have thawed considerably, to the point where the opening track “Don’t Fight The Sea” from
Jardine’s new solo album
A Postcard From California features vocals from Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Bruce
Johnston, and
the late Carl Wilson. Check it out below.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival :: 10.02 – 10.04 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco, CA

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Golden Gate Park played host to the 9th Annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, and the lineup, crowds and camaraderie did not disappoint.

There was a sixth stage added this year, the Towers of Gold Stage, and although Speedway Meadow was pushed to its capacity, it didn’t seem to bother the estimated 500,000 that turned out for this year’s extravaganza. The event felt well organized and with 80 top-notch bands performing for free all weekend, there was hardly anything one could really complain about.

Financed by billionaire investment banker and amateur banjoist Warren Hellman, this year was the largest by far and has already been touted as a success. Which leaves one to ask, “Where can it go from here?” Hellman, a bluegrass enthusiast and lover of music who started this Festival in 2001, made his money as the founder and chairman of San Francisco-based Hellman and Friedman LLC, a private equity investment firm. So, what makes him so far removed from his peers? With his nickname, The Hillbilly Millionaire, his band, The Wronglers, and his passion for bluegrass, he most surely stands out from his associates. This being said, it hasn’t always been such an eclectic festival. Yes, from the onset it’s been subsidized by Hellman and it has always been a bluegrass festival, but it wasn’t until 2003 that the “Hardly” was added to the name of the festival and artists from almost every genre were invited.

Friday, 10.02

Friday the meadow was filled with a variety of fans, not to mention the lucky middle school students from the local district that got to spend their afternoon in the park watching music. Speaking with a few students who seemed ecstatic to be at such a large festival, they were amazed that it was free to the public. Of course, MC Hammer playing “Can’t Touch This” probably went over their heads, and although his time as a headliner has past, that did little to diminish his performance, and the fact that he’s been included in the festival the past couple of years shows the diversity in artists that get to play.

The highlight of Friday was John Prine, who played in the afternoon as a notable chill picked up out of the West as festivalgoers dug into their packs for sweatshirts and blankets. Prine, never one to stick to just singing, interspersed songs with commentary, though he nailed hits such as “Angel From Montgomery.” The evening was dazzling, with a feel of autumn in the air as Prine and his formally dressed band exited the stage. It almost felt like the perfect note to leave on, but it was worth waiting around to hear a few songs from Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. With an ear-to-ear grin, Lovett never disappoints, and as a live artist he rocks and rolls, playing off the crowd and did so until darkness brought the day to a close.

Saturday, 10.03

Steve Martin :: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Saturday started with a bang at the Star Stage with Great American Taxi, a bluegrass/country-rock mix featuring Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon. It was exciting to hear the way they approached their songs. They strayed from the typical bluegrass routine and jammed out a few tunes with amazing banjo and bass rhythms.

Next stop, back to the Towers of Gold Stage, as I planned my day around a tight schedule and an increasingly crowded park. With the wind now starting to shift from a mild breeze to whirlwinds and dust storms, Buddy Miller was on the agenda. As Miller made his appearance, the music was sweet and melodic but almost too much so, and then to much fanfare and surprise Buddy’s old boss Emmylou Harris came out, looking stunning as usual. She was not expected to perform until Sunday afternoon, so this came as a nice surprise. Speaking of nice surprises, an amazing appearance by Robert Plant, who played last year with Alison Krauss, came as a total shock, and they covered Hank Snow’s “I’m Moving On” – an electric moment for sure.

Another great band that some overlooked was Okkervil River, an indie rock act from Austin, Texas. Their chemistry onstage was so moving that after their set I was ready to buy a few of their albums, Black Sheep Boy and Golden Opportunities being what was recommended. They amassed a nice crowd at the Towers Stage as the wind continued to whip and wallop the meadow as the audience loosened up for a day of dancing, clapping, and cheering.

Steve Martin could fit in with almost any bluegrass outfit of his choosing. A little known secret about the well-known actor and comedian is that music and the banjo have always been his first love. He has, of course, incorporated this into his stand-up routines, but his humor takes nothing away from his raw talent as a musician, and he absolutely rocks onstage! The Steep Canyon Rangers, the band that he has played with more and more lately, are incredible. Martin was captivating and never one to shy away from humorous commentary, but the music, while slightly drowned out by the wind’s howl, still hit hard. The percussive beats that flowed from his banjo were mesmerizing and made one wish this show could have gone on forever.

As Saturday morning turned into Saturday afternoon, the crowd of 300,000 was making itself known, cramming onto hillsides, on top of portable bathrooms, and into trees. Nick Lowe performed on the Star Stage, which was less than impressive, most likely because by this time the sound was suffering due to the wind and din of a very large crowd. As I departed I could make out “Cruel To Be Kind,” but it was time head to the Banjo Stage for Gillian Welch. Happily settled in front of the stage, where the acoustics were great for this entire set, Welch displayed her beautiful voice and rhythm guitar licks. The wind seemed to die down completely as she bellowed out “Wrecking Ball.”

Sunday, 10.04

Emmylou Harris :: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Sunday was the day I was most looking forward to. The day started windy but not bothersome, and it wasn’t too crowded as I made my way to the Rooster Stage to see Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3. They had me at the sound check. His Americana musical influences came through strongly on songs like “The Falling” and the rocking “Give It To The Soft Boys,” with his voice mixing well with The Venus 3. Hitchcock played many of the newer songs off of his latest album, Goodnight Oslo, and though his show was more Americana, being a British born singer-songwriter, he teamed up well with Peter Buck (R.E.M.) in his recent work to create an Americana-Indie hybrid that was lovely. An awesome start to a long wind swept day.

At this point it was off to the Star Stage to catch The Chieftains, an Irish band that has been playing their traditional Irish folk music and upbeat rhythms for over 40 years. This got me thinking about how much Irish folk music has influenced bluegrass in America. Leaving the Star Stage, it was back to the Banjo Stage to see the honorable Earl Scruggs. If it wasn’t for people like Scruggs we would not be having this festival, and for someone born in 1924 he brought it to the stage at full steam! The connection he shared with the crowd as they cheered him on was overwhelming, and I felt honored to see him perform again. I hope he returns next year. What a living legend!

Regretfully, I missed the amazing piano work of Allen Toussaint, but when there are 80 bands to choose from you can only catch so many. However, I struck up a conversation with a couple from New Orleans who had seen Toussaint and would not stop talking about how beautifully he played. You can’t see it all and if you happen to get stuck in one of those amazing moments like I did with Earl Scruggs, then you’ve gotta go with the flow. The night ended with a gorgeous set by Emmylou Harris, another Hardly Strictly Bluegrass staple, and then a long set that went past twilight from Old Crow Medicine Show.

Other great sets included Neko Case and Aimee Mann, not to mention a much talked about “White Room” cover by Robert Earl Keen.

What I came away with, besides three days of diverse and terrific music, was a feeling of community that was lacking at other festivals in Golden Gate Park this past year. People seemed happy to just be there. Maybe it was the lack of a price tag or the intimate, grassy area that was shared by so many. Whatever it was, I’m Hardly ready to see it go, this weekend in San Francisco was strictly a pleasure.

Power to the Peaceful Food Drive

Power to the Peaceful Food Drive

At this weekend’s free Power to the Peaceful Festival in S.F.’s Golden Gate Park, the Conscious Alliance will host their fourth annual food drive to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank. A free event poster will be given to the first few hundred patrons that donate 10 non-perishable food items or more.

The Conscious Alliance always encourages food donations to be low-sodium, health food oriented products. Last year, the Conscious Alliance formed a national partnership with Whole Foods Market resulting in over a $1 million worth of healthy food donations. The monetary donations generated during this year’s Power to the Peaceful Festival will go towards delivering the remainder of the nutritious food to impoverished communities across the United States. Outside Lands Music Festival
Day 3 Photos & Top 3

Outside Lands Music Festival :: Day 3 :: 08.30.09 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco, CA

As temperatures dropped severely throughout the weekend, by the final day of Outside Lands it was chilly, foggy and windy. Those who call The Bay home were barely fazed with layers of clothing coming out of backpacks, but there were clearly some out-of-towners caught in t-shirts and shorts. With the Beastie Boys having to cancel their headlining slot, Tenacious D filled in somewhat admirably with a funny, shtick-heavy set that also included some rather impressive shredding from Kyle Gass, Jack Black and the impressive support cast of unknown rockers. In lieu of a proper, big name headliner, the rest of the bands on Sunday upped the ante with powerful sets across the board. The Top 3 that follows could have come in any order with no one band clearly sticking out and each rising to the occasion.

Kayceman’s Top 3 From Sunday

1. Alison Mosshart/The Dead Weather – I went to see Jack White and fell in love with Alison. Listen to The Kills and you know this chick can rock, but put her with Jackie White on a big stage and let the sticky sex drip all over you. Somehow balancing on the speaker monitors, Mosshart was a writhing beast, grinding and twisting as she channeled the primal rock gods in a mid-tempo Zeppelin manner. Jack proved plenty talented on the drums but really wowed the crowd when he took center stage on guitar to sing into one mic with Mosshart. This was stadium sized rock, all big, fuzzy and unforgiving. It’s a good thing the sun stayed away; this was The Dead Weather for sure.

2. Ween – Never a hard core fan, this set made me wonder what I’ve been missing. From popular hits like “Bananas and Blow” and “Roses Are Free” to bust outs like “Touch My Tooter” and “The Final Alarm” to a very drugged-out “Zoloft” and a wickedly dark, psychedelic “Buckingham Green,” this set had it all. But even more than Deaner‘s (Mickey Melchiondo) inspired guitar work that proved about as impressive as any guitarist all weekend (save for Omar Rodriguez Lopez), it was the tight arrangements and near perfect execution of the songs that really drove it home. When these freaks are on, clearly it is on! I won’t miss my next chance to get effed by Ween.

3. Band of Horses – Considering how heartwarming and feel good BoH was, it’s a testament to Ween and The Dead Weather that this set is down at the number three slot. Songs like “Is There A Ghost,” “Marry Song” and “Our Swords” poured off the stage, Ben Bridwell‘s reverb-laced voice washing over the packed meadow like a warm breeze. “General Specific” was a foot-stomping good time and Gram Parson’s “A Song For You” was simply gorgeous. But it was the emotionally-saturated combo of “The Funeral” and “Ode to LRC” that received the biggest crowd response, Bridwell’s exposed delivery drawing a few tears to the surface. Another striking set from a band that has truly found their country-rock indie-Americana sound.

Outside Lands Music Festival
Day 2 Photos & Top 3

Outside Lands Music Festival :: Day 2 :: 08.29.09 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco, CA

Saturday at the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival featured another gorgeous day. Without a cloud in the clear blue sky it was still warm but the cool ocean breeze kept the temp down a few degrees and offered fans a bit of relief on their cross-venue hikes. With Dave Matthews Band, Black Eyed Peas and Jason Mraz on one side of the grounds and The Mars Volta, TV on the Radio and Mastodon on the other, the scheduling was perfect and allowed the very different fan bases to stay out of each other’s way and get to the music they wanted with ease.

Kayceman’s Top 3 From Saturday

1. The Mars Volta – A blistering display of heavy psychedelic rock, this set destroyed the Twin Peaks Stage, literally. Singer Cedric Bixler Zavala took the giant band sign (used for all bands, but at this point reading: “The Mars Volta”) and dragged it onstage where he kicked through the back in an act of punk defiance. Guess they won’t be using that sign on Sunday. When not breaking shit, Cedric was crawling around the stage, hanging off the mic stand, doing mule-kicks and pushing his falsetto into truly demented areas. And that was just Cedric. The other five guys were a tsunami of never-ending energy, mind-boggling time changes and guitarist/bandleader Omar Rodriguez Lopez‘ sonic six-string assault. Playing songs from their entire career, from new tracks like “Teflon” to classics like “Roulette Dares,” “Drunkship of Lanterns” and “Viscera Eyes” to lesser known gems like “Eunuch Provocateur,” this set was hot and bothered from note one and it never stopped coming at ya!

2. Mastodon – Even before we could see the four-piece metal heroes it was like an earthquake shaking Golden Gate Park. This is music you feel as much as you hear. It slams into your chest rattling your ribs before you can literally feel it running through your legs and up your spine, where it does strange things to your mind. Leaning heavily on the more-rock-than-metal material of latest album Crack The Skye, this set was devastating in execution. These are four virtuosic musicians, but it was drummer Brann Dailor that ran the show. Easily one of the most talented drummers on the circuit, Dailor pulled off impossible fills with thundering power. To the casual listener Mastodon probably comes off as another testosterone-fueled metal band, but they are so much more. Under the wall of noise are subtle tempo shifts and rhythmic nuances that at times dip into bluesy riffs and classic rock power chords. Mastodon has been called metal’s savior, and this set was proof.

3. TV on the Radio – Aided by a three-piece horn section that included AntibalasStuart Bogie, this set soared from a rough Motown swing to Morphine-esque sheets of sax to Talking Heads guitar rhythms to a gruff, almost punk delivery from singer Tunde Adebimpe. The two-step hand-clap fun of “Golden Age” met the psychedelic burn of “Wolf Like Me,” “DLZ” and “Staring At The Sun” for what appeared to be a glimpse of rock’s future.

Dennis Cook’s Top 3 From Saturday

1. The Dirtbombs – These enduring underground Detroit hellraisers kicked the livestock awake and took rock back to its moist, dangerous roots. Theirs is an enveloping, churning sound that’s a more gutbucket, uncivilized version of what My Bloody Valentine throws down except you can twist wildly to this blessed noise. Bang-up kickoff to Twin Peaks Stage, which hosted perhaps the rowdiest, most adventurous lineup (The Dirtbombs, Street Sweeper Social Club, Mastodon, TV on the Radio, The Mars Volta) on Saturday.

2. Os Mutantes – After going missing for decades, one approached this set from this beloved Brazilian group with some trepidation. Only co-founder, singer, guitarist Sergio Dias remains from the original band but he’s surrounded by young, highly engaged go-getters that sunk their pointy teeth into Mutantes’ classic ’60s/’70s material as well as new tunes from their forthcoming return to the studio after 35 years, Haih Or Amortecedor (out September 8 on Anti-), which show real signs of life and renewed creativity. Opening with a ferocious attack on “Jardim Electrico,” they slipped between past and present efforts, tying them together with a roughshod charm and raw talent that compares well with the band’s storied history. Arriving with some complications, Dias introduced “Querida Querida,” saying, “We are lacking some stuff because it broke, but that is life. So, we’ll rock and roll it, which is better.” Amen, sir.

3. Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band – As one suspected listening to Mr. Bright Eyes’ second outing with the Mystic Valley Band, Outer South (JamBase review here), live is where everything is gelling with this still-evolving group. A gutsy, nicely extended “I Got The Reason” kicked the studio version’s butt, as did the shimmy-tastic “Air Mattress,” where guitarist Taylor Hollingsworth took over lead vocals. Oberst’s loopy stage banter contrasted nicely with his infinitely quotable lyrics, and between the really together group dynamics on display and a sweet, rockin’ surprise guest turn from Jenny Lewis (who Oberst announced they’d kidnapped from L.A.) on a dazzling duet cover of Rilo Kiley’s “Portions For Foxes,” this set made for the perfect sunset offering of memorable, rootsy, heartfelt music.
