A leading Georgian opposition party has filed a lawsuit against Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
RIA Novosti reports quoting a Russian business daily on Thursday that they accuse him of crimes against humanity.

4 Georgian soldiers killed in Afghanistann

Georgia’s Defense Ministry says four Georgian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, RFE/RL reports. This is the biggest loss for the country’s military since it deployed in the war-torn country.

Destroyed Georgian monument “to be rebuilt in Moscow”

Georgian opposition protests removal of WW2 memorial

Georgian opposition parties are protesting a government decision to take down a huge World War II memorial complex in the city of Kutaisi. Opposition leaders and activists gathered today at the memorial complex, which was built in Soviet times to commemorate the victims and veterans of World War II.

Georgian newspaper appeals for support

Georgia’s Gazeti Batumelebi newspaper has accused the country’s security services of blackmail and pressure. In a letter to international press and human rights organizations, the newspaper’s publisher, Mzia Amaglobeli, appeals for support to this independent media, and says the pressure against it is intended to “secretly interfere with the newspaper’s editorial policy”.

Georgian FM renounces Russian citizenship

Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze said on Wednesday he had decided to renounce his Russian citizenship. A lawmaker for the Kremlin-backed A Just Russia party, Semyon Bagdasarov, had earlier proposed to strip the Georgian diplomat of his Russian citizenship. The move was rejected by the Russian Foreign Ministry on the grounds that it contradicts Russian laws.

Movie star plays Georgian leader

Cuban-American actor Andy Garcia is in Georgia to play the part of President Mikheil Saakashvili in a film about last year’s conflict with Russia. Georgia and Russia still disagree strongly about the reality of what happened when they went to war in 2008.

Georgian journalist asks for asylum in S. Ossetia

A Georgian journalist has asked for political asylum in the Russian-backed breakaway region of South Ossetia, RFE/RL reports. Levan Gudadze was known for his criticism of Georgian authorities during the war against Russia.
