Juliette Lewis: Terra Incognita

Actress/Rocker Juliette Lewis’ New Album Terra Incognita Out Now

Juliette Lewis

With an exciting new sound and significantly diverse collection of songs, multi-media wild woman Juliette Lewis releases her new album, Terra Incognita.

Emerging on the music scene in 2004, Lewis has toured the world and released three full-length albums. Instrumental in creating the sound for her new record is the album’s producer Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Grammy Award winning leader of The Mars Volta. Upon meeting Omar on tour at the Japanise Fugi Rock Festival in 2007, they have translated her ideas into an emotionally guttural and melodic new sound. There is a deep undercurrent on the entire record of contrasting themes – romance and tragedy, dreams and disillusionment. Lewis wrote most of the 11 tracks with long time friend and musician Chris Watson and recorded the album in between both of her and Omar’s tours at the end of 2008. The record was mixed by the legendary Rich Cosey (Nine Inch Nails, Muse, Foo Fighters).

Brett Dennen & Grace Potter Tour

BRETT DENNEN ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR WITH GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS

Brett Dennen

Brett Dennen, whose narrative-rich lyrics and world-infused melodies have earned comparisons to Bob Marley and Paul Simon, has announced a Fall Tour with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. He will hit the Austin City Limits Festival in October, then perform at both The Greek and The Hollywood Bowl with Jason Mraz in October before setting out with Potter in November (full dates listed below). Registered fans on BrettDennen.net can purchase presale tickets on Thursday, September 10. Tickets go on sale to the general public for all shows starting Friday morning, September 11.

Already one of the fastest growing touring artists on the road, Brett recently told Billboard Magazine, “I’m really excited about this tour because I think it’s going to be a little more rocking than tours I’ve done in the past.” He adds, “Grace really knows how to rock it.”

Dennen’s current single, “Heaven” featuring Natalie Merchant debuted on iTunes last week and is already being adopted early and fast by AAA radio. The single’s success is a further step in Dennen’s rising profile after a summer of touring some of the biggest festivals like Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Summer Fest, Mountain Jam, Outside Lands Festival and Bumbershoot, as well as joining O.A.R. at venues like Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden.

Muse: The Resistance

British Trio Muse Unveil New Single, “Uprising,” Off

The Band’s Forthcoming Album, The Resistance, Due Out September 15

Muse

A glammed-up rock stomper, “Uprising” (check it below) is the first single from Muse‘s self-produced fifth studio album The Resistance, which will be released on September 15. Recorded in Italy, the album was mixed by famed audio engineer Mark “Spike” Stent, who is known for his work with U2, Depeche Mode, No Doubt, and Oasis, among many others. The single is the first new music from Muse since Black Holes and Revelations, which debuted at Number 9 on Billboard’s album chart in July 2006. Over the last few years, Muse – comprised of vocalist/guitarist Matt Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dom Howard – have played to sold-out crowds worldwide in support of Black Holes, which spawned modern rock hits “Knights Of Cydonia,” “Starlight” and “Supermassive Black Hole.”

In anticipation of their new album, Muse will perform at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13, two days before The Resistance is released in the U.S. In addition, the band will open select shows for U2, including two shows at Giants Stadium in New York, this fall.

Porcupine Tree: Incident

Porcupine Tree Unravel New Album The Incident Due September 22

Porcupine Tree

Inspired by a flashing road sign that reduced a horrible traffic accident to the antiseptic phrase “POLICE-INCIDENT,” British prog act Porcupine Tree‘s front man Steven Wilson composed the 55 minute, 14-track song cycle as a reflection on other “incidents” reported in the media and news.

The different topics include – the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbors, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage.

Personal incidents that profoundly affected Wilson, have also been included on the new album include a lost childhood friendship, a seance, his first love, and the day that he decided to give up secure employment to follow his dream of making music.

The new album is in typical Porcupine Tree fashion and as presumed the band ranges effortlessly between art-rock and acoustic psychedelica, prog, and metal. Listen to an album preview medley at the band’s MySpace page.

The Incident will also come with a second CD of four songs that developed from band’s writing sessions last year but which are conceptually independent from the set of songs on the first disc. It will also be released as a 5.1 surround mix and as a limited special edition that comes with two books of artwork related to the album encased in a slipcase.

Massa crashes in qualifying race

• Alonso takes pole with Red Bull duo second and third
• Button qualifies in eighth with Hamilton fourth

Felipe Massa is to undergo surgery following his accident in today’s Hungarian grand prix qualifying.

Although word emerged after a chaotic session that Massa was “okay” after being airlifted to a nearby Budapest hospital, Ferrari later confirmed the Brazilian would need an operation.

A statement read: “After the accident during the qualifying session, Felipe was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest. Felipe was conscious at the arrival of the hospital, and his general conditions remain stable.

“Following a complete medical examination, it emerged he had suffered a cut on his forehead, bone damage to his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care.”

A Ferrari official confirmed the Brazilian “was hit by something on the helmet, losing control of the car” in the closing stages of the middle 15-minute session. Both team principal Stefano Domenicali and team spokesperson Luca Colajanni later confirmed Massa was out of the event.

The 28-year-old was struck by a piece of debris deposited by Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP.

Replays showed a part of the car coming off the Brawn and bouncing along the same area of the Hungaroring track where the drama began for Massa. Massa later caught the debris, on one of his hot laps, which then bounced up, striking his helmet and knocking him unconscious. Massa’s feet must have relaxed at that point, one on the throttle as on-screen graphics showed it remained open, the other on the brake as there were skid marks across the considerable run-off area before he ploughed nose first into a tyre barrier. The fact Massa made no attempt to turn out of the impact appeared to underline the fact he was not conscious as he hurtled into the tyres.

With Massa stricken in the car, photographs later emerged showing a fist-sized dent in his helmet, and with his visor up, there was a large cut over a blackened left eye. Massa was soon attended to by trackside medics before being taken to the circuit’s medical centre, then to hospital for further examination 22 minutes after his crash.

To add to the drama, the timing screens went black towards the end of the top-10 shootout, throwing everybody into confusion as not even the drivers had a clue as to who had taken pole. After several minutes, it finally came through that Fernando Alonso for Renault had taken pole, followed by the Red Bull duo of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, with Lewis Hamilton fourth for McLaren.

It was the double world champion’s first pole since the Italian Grand Prix in 2007, and the 18th of his career. Explaining the chaos at the end, Alonso said: “We were chatting amongst ourselves in parc ferme trying to find out what happened. It was a fantastic effort from the team. We put in some new parts at the Nurburging [German Grand Prix], and we’ve showed we have made a step forward.”

Behind world champion Hamilton will be Williams’ Nico Rosberg, the second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, with championship leader Jenson Button down in eighth. The heat of Budapest was meant to aid Button’s cause after the cool of Britain and Germany had led to Red Bull one-twos in the last two races. But not even the sunshine could come to Button’s aid, and his 21-point lead in the title race threatens to be eroded further at the Hungaroring.

Behind Button are Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima, with Massa 10th as he naturally took no part in the closing 10 minutes, however, he will be in a position to race tomorrow.

In the 15-minute Q2, the biggest loser was Rubens Barrichello, with the Brazilian failing to make it into the top 10 for the first time this season due to the part that broke off his car.

The 37-year-old will start a miserable 13th, with that failure potentially wrecking his championship chances, which could now prompt Brawn into putting all their eggs into Button’s basket.

Although rookie Jaime Alguersuari became the youngest to take part in a Formula One qualifying session, there was no fairytale for the 19-year-old. Alguersuari had run faultlessly through three practice sessions, at least proving he was anything but “a danger” as suggested by triple world champion Niki Lauda.

In qualifying, however, Alguersuari was undermined by an electrical fault that forced him to pull his Toro Rosso off track in the final sector. Come the conclusion of the 20-minute period, Alguersuari sat at the bottom of the timesheets, in many respects where he was expected to finish even if his car had not let him down.

Grid positions after qualifying

Brave Wiggins holds on to fourth

Bradley Wiggins

Briton Bradley Wiggins delivered a heroic ride on Mont Ventoux to cling on to fourth place in the Tour de France.

In the closing kilometres Wiggins slipped off the group containing yellow jersey leader Alberto Contador, Lance Armstrong and the Schleck brothers.

But he did just enough to hold on to fourth overall and is set to equal the best finish by a Briton in the race.

Spaniard Contador is poised to win his second Tour de France after he finished fourth in the tough penultimate stage.

Juan Manuel Garate won the stage after breaking away from the peloton early in the race with Tony Martin and Christophe Riblon, with the Spaniard first dropping the Frenchman and then pulling away from the German right at the death.

With Contador comfortably holding on to the yellow jersey, Andy Schleck and Lance Armstrong remain in second and third respectively.

During the ascent of Ventoux, fifth-place Frank Schleck attempted to snatch a podium place from Armstrong, but the seven-time champion kept a careful eye on the Luxembourg rider, always responding to the Saxo Bank rider’s attacks.

Wiggins’ compatriot Mark Cavendish will now turn his attention to winning a sixth stage in the 2009 Tour as the race concludes on the Champs Elysees in Paris on Sunday.

1132: thewholehog on 606:"The battle for the podium places will be quite something. I just hope Wiggins has one more good day left in him. Can’t believe he lost time to Lance yesterday – he should have had Millar and Vande Velde etc making sure he was up the front, or just stuck to Lance’s wheel. That four seconds could yet be important."1129: The 13 riders in this breakaway group are Hayden Roulston, Juan Manuel Garate, Joost Posthuma, Tony Martin, Christophe Riblon, Aleksandr Kuschynski, Anthony Geslin, Samuel Dumoulin, Daniele Righi, William Bonnet, Maxime Bouet, Cyril Lemoine and Albert Timmer. They are three minutes and 35 seconds clear of the peloton with 26km of the 178km done. The three men trying to bridge the gap are Mickael Delage, Ruben Perez Moreno and Jose Ivan Gutierrez, they are just 25 seconds behind now.1124: This gap keeps growing – up to two minutes and 40 seconds now after 24km. I’ll list the 13 riders who are clear next…1115: So, what’s it like to cycle up Mont Ventoux I spoke to Bradley Wiggins’ coach and close friend Shane Sutton a couple of days ago and he told me: "Until you’ve ridden on Ventoux and endured it you can never appreciate it. It’s so easy to crack." One person who has tried it is BBC Breakfast sports presenter Mike Bushell – you can check out how he got on here.1112: After 10km, the 13 breakaway riders are two minutes and 10 seconds ahead of the peloton – the three men trying to bridge the gap are 45 seconds behind the escapees.

1107: Just a correction from earlier – there are 156 men left in this year’s Tour, not 157. Amets Txurruka (that’s hard enough to write, let alone pronounce!) and his fellow Spaniard and Euskatel team-mate Alan Perez Lazaun finished outside the time limit in yesterday’s stage, and their race is over.1105: Blimey, they’re not hanging about today. Thirteen men escaped inside the first 3km and have a 40 second lead on the peloton – another three riders are trying to bridge the gap.

1059: GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AFTER STAGE 19:

1. Alberto Contador (Spa/Astana) 73 hrs 15 mins 39 seconds
2. Andy Schleck (Lux/Saxo Bank) + 4 mins 11 secs
3. Lance Armstrong (USA/Astana) + 5 min 21 secs
4. Bradley Wiggins (GB/Garmin) + 5 min 36 secs
5. Andreas Kloden (Ger/Astana) + 5 mins 38 secs
6. Frank Schleck (Lux/Saxo Bank) + 5 mins 59 secs

Twitter

Lance Armstrong on Twitter: "Good morning! Big day today (literally). Expecting 500k spectators on the Ventoux today. What an arena. Know it well, we’re old friends but haven’t always gotten along. Two times 2nd. Ugh."

1052: The 157 riders left in the race will roll out of the neutral zone at Montelimar in the next few minutes. Before we get to what we’re all waiting for – the bottom of Ventoux – they will negotiate a few smaller climbs. Today’s stage is quite short at 178km but it will end in fireworks, trust me…

Bradley Wiggins

1048: Of course, also hoping for a slice of the Paris podium pie is Bradley Wiggins, who lies 15 seconds behind Armstrong in fourth overall. He is likely to be attacked from all sides today, but is one great ride away from making history and becoming Britain’s first rider to manage a top-three Tour finish.

Yellow jersey

1046: The climb to the finish line is sure to see a series of attacks from the Schleck brothers, Andy and Frank, who will want to secure second and third place behind champion-in-waiting Alberto Contador. Contador, and the rest of the Astana heavy-mob, must make absolutely certain that the Spaniard is safe in yellow but will want his team-mates Lance Armstrong and Andreas Kloden to join him in the top three.1043 BST: Time to sort the men from the boys. The battle for podium places in this year’s Tour de France will be decided on the slopes of the ‘Giant of Provence’ – Mont Ventoux – at the end of today’s stage.

1249: Mikhail Ignatiev’s time will probably be good enough to keep him out in front for a good while longer, but I’ll keep an eye on Fabian Cancellara’s progress (he’s just started) and Britain’s David Millar too (he starts in five minutes).1245: TOP FIVE FINISHERS (53 out of 158 riders have completed the course):

Mark Cavendish

1214: The lower-ranked riders in the General Classification started out on the time trial a couple of hours ago – I’ll bring you the top five finishers so far soon, but first news of Mark Cavendish – He is 23rd out of 35 finishers so far, with a time of 54 minutes. 1211: BBC Radio 5 Live’s Alex Murray on 606:"Reports from out on the course (twittering journos mainly) suggest it could be windy out on the course with potential for rain which will have an effect on times."

1210: Today’s route is a 40.5km circuit of the picturesque Lake Annecy – the first 25km are flat, followed by a climb up the Col de Bluffy and a descent to the finish. There are time checks at 18km (Doussard) and 28.5km.

It's good news for a British rider

Bradley Wiggins

1208: Yep, Britain’s Bradley Wiggins will look at Thursday’s time trial around Lake Annecy as a way of boosting his hopes of a place on the podium in Paris. Wiggo slipped from third to sixth overall after Wednesday’s gruelling stage from Bourg St Maurice to Le Grand Bornard, where the Schleck brothers (Andy and Frank) – plus Andreas Kloden – leapfrogged him in the General Classification.

But he has a chance of repairing some, if not all, of that damage today…

1205 BST: Right then. It’s time to find out whether Wiggo has got anything left in the tank after his efforts in the Alps…<br/

The sun is out

It's raining

1136: A few early attacks on the slopes of the Cormet de Roselend but nobody has succeeded in escaping yet – Sylvain Chavanel is the latest to try his luck. This stage is going to be tough enough as it is but it looks like the weather will play its part too – it’s sunny and windy at the moment for the riders, but there is torrential rain at the finish, which could make things interesting later…

Lance Armstrong, a few hours ago, on Twitter: "Just heard from Frank Schleck that Jens is doing ok. Good news."

Twitter

Bradley Wiggins on Twitter: "My thoughts go out to big Jens Voigt, hope you’re ok man."

1130: Speaking of crashes, we’ve had another one already – riders are scattered all over the road. You might remember one of them, Vladimir Karpets, from yesterday’s stage. He went down as though somebody had pulled a rug from under him but he’s back on his bike now.

First aid

1127: Some news on Jens Voigt, who you might remember crashed heavily on the descent down the Col du Petit St Bernardyesterday. The German Saxo Bank rider was flown to hospital in Grenoble with a fractured cheekbone and an injured right elbow – his Tour is over, but he seems to be on the mend already.

Sorensen wins stage 12 of Tour

• Danish rider wins by 48 seconds from Tonnerre to Vittel
• Nocentini stays in yellow, Cavendish remains in green

Nicki Sorensen took his maiden Tour de France victory with a breakaway win on stage 12 from Tonnerre to Vittel. The 34-year-old, who won the Danish national championships last year, powered away from Sylvain Calzati with less than 6km remaining.

Despite the margin of his victory Sorensen does not threaten the yellow jersey, having begun the day more than 10 minutes behind the leader Rinaldo Nocentini, who will remain in yellow tomorrow. Laurent Lefèvre, Franco Pellizotti, Markus Fothen, Egoi Martínez and Calzati finished 48 seconds behind, with Rémi Pauriol a further 45 seconds back.

Sorensen featured in a seven-man breakaway at the 64km mark that quickly built a gap of over four minutes – and he proved the strongest of the group. Andy Schleck and Cadel Evans also tried their luck early in the stage but they were swiftly reined in by the bunch.

Lance Armstrong suffered a puncture after 150km but the seven-time champion was quickly brought back into the peloton by four team-mates after he had had his rear wheel changed.

Sorensen and Calzati attacked the breakaway group with 22km left and the duo did not look back as the gap with the peloton went past the six-minute mark, and Sorensen went solo 5.5km from the line.

Mark Cavendish extended his lead in the race for the green jersey with victory in the day’s first sprint. Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong remain six and eight seconds respectively behind Nocentini.
