Graphic Illustration of Why Superficial Financial Fixes Will Fail In An Environment Where Giant Banks Are Allowed to Hide Massive Debt

I’ve written a lot about why superficial fixes will fail as long as the giant banks are allowed to hide their massive debts. See this, this and this.I’ve also repeatedly noted that the size of the derivatives market dwarfs the global economy – and fo…

Brazil’s mining giant: Valuable Vale

Few firms have achieved so much with so little fanfare. But can Vale mine anything other than iron ore?

IT IS perhaps the biggest firm you have never heard of. The Boston Consulting Group says it has created more value than any other large firm in the world over the past decade. Yet few people know how to pronounce Vale’s name (it’s “vah-lay”).

This giant Brazilian miner has stayed out of the spotlight even as ravenous demand from China has propelled it from insignificance ten years ago to a market capitalisation of $147 billion. It is now the world’s second-largest miner: smaller than BHP Billiton, but bigger than Rio Tinto and other better-known rivals. …

Mexican airlines: A clumsy giant stumbles

Mexicana’s bankruptcy will bring welcome turbulence to Mexican skies

AFTER 89 years in the skies, North America’s oldest airline seems ready to ditch. Compania Mexicana de Aviacion filed for bankruptcy protection on August 2nd and has been in a tailspin ever since: ticket sales were stopped on August 4th and a third of its routes were suspended a few days later. The airline says it has lost $350m since 2007 and now owes nearly $800m.

These are difficult times for airlines everywhere. But despite the entry of several low-cost carriers since 2005, fares in Mexico have remained old-fashionedly high: an hour’s flight from the capital’s main airport to Guadalajara, Mexico’s second city, cannot be had next month for much less than $175 return. Sao Paulo to Rio, a similar hop, can be done for $100. Partly because of this, middle-class Brazilians fly three times more often than their Mexican counterparts. …

Blue Giant: Tour Dates & Album

SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM OUT NOW

Blue Giant

Blue Giant, led by
Kevin and Anita Robinson of Viva Voce, will be hitting the road this August in support of their newly released debut
album, Blue Giant. The band will be sharing the stage with Bobby Bare Jr. beginning in Memphis
on August 24 with additional stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York. See full tour dates
below.

The twelve tracks on the album, written by Kevin and Anita, combine the traditional sounds of American music –
country, bluegrass, and folk with driving, straight-ahead rock from the classic country feel of “Lonely Girl,” to the
melodic guitars in “Clean The Clock,” to the mellow, deceptively simple “Gone For Good” which features Sleater-
Kinney’s Corin Tucker.

The Giant Banks, Federal Reserve and Treasury Have All Blackmailed America

As I wrote last October: Congressmen Brad Sherman and Paul Kanjorski and Senator James Inhofe all say that the government warned of martial law if Tarp wasn’t passed. And Rahm Emanuel famously said: Never let a serious crisis go to waste. What I…

Giant inflatable castle on Lake Garda?

Things that make you go ‘eh?’ No, I’m not talking about The General being back in the black. I was on Honda’s media site this evening and I came across some bizarre looking pics and a video. A trio of young men from London were paddling an inflatable castle – the kind of thing that five-year-olds bounce around on – across Lake Garda. The young trio undertook the challenge as part of their participation in the Live Every Litre project by Honda (www.liveeverylitre.com).

The giant red and yellow castle set off at 9am across the lake, making ‘good progress with a combination of paddles and the wind’. They still managed to gate-crash an international sailing regatta. After successfully navigating their way through the melee of Lazer class sailing dinghies, the group came ashore in Riva Del Garda, where ‘astonished tourists formed an unofficial welcoming committee’.

Self-appointed group leader and mentor, Chris, was delighted to have made history, commenting: “Great Britain has such a great tradition as a sea fairing nation and we really feel we have played no role at all in adding to this. That said it was possibly the most fun we have ever had and we really never believed this most frivolous of dreams would ever be realised.”

Well, fair enough. They had some fun. I could just ask this: er, what was the point? I don’t want to sound curmudgeonly, but could they have put their energy into something more sort of, well, socially useful? Maybe I’m getting old…

Have a look at the website liveeverylitre and see if you can work out what on earth is going on and also ponder what Honda is up to…clearly the kids will all want a Jazz or a Civic.
