Jerry Garcia Honored At Giants Game In San Francisco
![]() |
The San Francisco Giants hosted a tribute to the late great Jerry Garcia during last night’s game vs. the
Chicago Cubs at AT&T Park in honor of
the 15 year anniversary of the Grateful Dead guitarist’s death.
The evening included many Dead-oriented activities, including the giveaway of Garcia Bobblehead dolls; the cover
band Cryptical performing
“Shakedown Street” and “Touch of Grey” before the game; Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Jeff Pehrson
singing the National Anthem; and Billy Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart and Bill Walton leading the
crowd in a Guinness Book of World Records kazoo-infused rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the
seventh inning stretch. Jerry’s family was on hand for the event with his daughter Annabel Garcia throwing
out the first pitch and saying a few words about her father.
The evening benefited The Rex
Foundation, which was founded by the Grateful Dead to support worthy non-profit organizations.
The Giants beat the Cubs 4-3 in the 11th inning.

Internet investment’s new champions: The emerging online giants
DST, Naspers and Tencent have made promising internet investments in many emerging markets. Now even Western internet financiers are emulating them
THEY may not have the name recognition of a Google or a Yahoo!, but they can claim to belong in the same league. The websites of Digital Sky Technologies (DST) account for more than 70% of page-views on the Russian-language internet. Naspers is Africa’s biggest media group, both offline and online. And Tencent is China’s largest internet company by market capitalisation—and the third-largest in the world.
Now these firms are increasingly making their presence felt beyond their home markets. Between them they have invested in dozens of internet firms around the globe. The most adventurous of the three, DST, has already moved west—and paid top dollar for stakes in fast-growing American companies, notably Facebook, the world’s biggest social network. …
10 Intriguing but Unlikely Mergers of IT Giants
In the tech industry, trying to compete with the juggernauts can be extremely difficult. Not only do they put pressure on smaller firms, they continue to innovate beyond what other companies are capable of achieving. That’s precisely why mergers and acquisitions might be best for some firms in the industry. By merging with other companies, they can bolster their lineup of offerings, and become a more efficient firm that can compete against companies such as Microsoft, Apple and Google. That said, the chances of any major mergers occurring among the largest and richest IT technology companies are quite slim. But that shouldn’t stop anyone from offering up some ideas. Here is a look at 20 tech companies that should merge, but sadly, probably never will. – …

Microsoft vs. Google: Tech Giants’ Turf War Heats Up
Google and Microsoft have their fingers in so many pies that one could use a Venn diagram to chart the multiple ways the rivals compete for consumers’ eyeballs and companies’ dollars. Fortunately, that’s what research analysts do for us. Gartner analysts Tom Austin and David Mitchell Smith held a Webcast March 31 to discuss the evolving battle between Google and Microsoft, examining their strengths, weaknesses and threats to their businesses. While Microsoft Bing is targeting Google’s search engine market share, Google Apps is looking to poach from the massive installed base of more than 500 million Microsoft Office users. In this slide show, eWEEK provides an overview of the battleground.

Japan’s vulnerable newspapers: The teetering giants
Japanese newspapers are in worse shape than they appear
AS NEWSPAPER companies across the developed world took a beating in the past few years, those in one rich country merely shrugged. Japanese newspapers are by far the world’s biggest: Yomiuri sells 10m copies each morning and another 3.6m in the evening. Newspapers enjoy such close ties with politicians and companies that news in Japan does not so much break as ooze. Yet the giants are teetering.
The problem is not circulation, which has held up well thanks to a distinctive system of distribution. Virtually all Japanese newspapers are delivered by agents who work on commission, frequently turning up on doorsteps to collect money. People carry on buying newspapers in Japan for the same reason they keep paying for gym memberships elsewhere: pushy salesmen. Between 1999 and 2009 the combined circulation of morning and evening papers in Japan fell by just 6.3%, according to Nihon Shimbun Kyokai (NSK), the newspaper publishers’ association. By contrast, American newspapers lost 10.6% of their paying readers between 2008 and 2009. …

Springsteen To Perform Full Albums at Giants Stadium
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND TO PERFORM
FULL ALBUM SEQUENCES DURING GIANTS STADIUM RUN
BORN TO RUN, DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, BORN IN THE USA TO BE PERFORMED IN THEIR ENTIRETY
E Street Band :: 09.20.09 :: Chicago by Chad Smith |
In response to the overwhelming fan enthusiasm at Chicago’s Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band live performance of the album Born to Run (read the JamBase review here), Springsteen has decided to perform one classic album each night at East Rutherford, NJ’s Giants Stadium:
09.30 Giants Stadium Born To Run
10.02 Giants Stadium
Darkness on the Edge of Town
10.03 Giants Stadium Born In The USA
10.08 Giants Stadium Born To Run
10.09 Giants Stadium Born In The USA
In Chicago, Bruce began with a varied set list, performed the album portion of the show in the middle of the concert, and continued the show through its grand finale. Said long time manager Jon Landau, “Chicago convinced us that this was really worth doing. The audience was so supportive of the concept that it convinced us to go ahead with this at Giants Stadium.”
Chicago Tribune‘s Greg Kot called that city’s performance “epic,” continuing, “they delivered and then some.”
