Project management is becoming more accepted as a discipline, according to ESI International, a project management training firm. Project management plays a critical role in organizations, whether its developing new products and services, or ensuring day-to-day operations run smoothly. Project managers may work with local or remote teams, or in many cases, virtual teams, with people from several different groups working together for a single project. For organizations, talented and effective project managers are a competitive advantage and that will continue to be the case in 2011, according to J LeRoy Ward, the executive vice-president of ESI. “Savvy business leaders” have to consider talent management and organization-specific requirements in order to keep talented managers, especially as the number of career-growth opportunities increase. A panel of consultant and senior executives from ESI collaborated on a list of key trends managers, directors, and senior executives should consider when reviewing the project management environment within their organization. 2011 will show an increase in formalizing and codifying job roles and authority for project managers, while giving them the tools to manage complex projects. The focus will be on communication, negotiation, and making changes within the organization to support the project. – …

GMG Global resumes Ivory Coast rubber shipments: Update 1
GMG Global said shipments from its rubber plantation and processing plant in Ivory Coast have resumed after delays last month caused by the West African nation’s political crisis.
The “shipment schedule for GMG is back on track and there are no further delays,” said Candy Fanya Chang, a spokeswoman for the Singapore-based company, in an e-mailed response to questions today.
GMG owns a majority stake in Tropical Rubber Cote d’Ivoire, a company that runs a 1,560-hectare (3,850-acre) plantation and a processing plant capable of producing 36,000 tonnes a year.
At least 173 people have died in unrest in Ivory Coast since the country’s Nov 28 presidential run-off election left both candidates claiming victory. Ivory Coast is Africa’s largest producer of rubber. The country’s exports increased 37% to 12,433 tonnes in November, the port of Abidjan said in a Dec. 28 statement.
June-delivery rubber extended its rally to a record 440.8 yen ($6.86) per kilogram in after-hours trading on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange after data showed improvement in the US economy, boosting expectations demand will expand for the commodity used in tires.

Global climate: Tough little girl
La Nina proves as disruptive as her better-known brother
EL NINO, a periodic sloshing of warm water from west to east across the Pacific, gets its name—“the boy child”—because it is around Christmas that it warms the water off Peru. It is now understood to have far wider effects, leading to characteristic patterns of temperature, rainfall and drought around much of the world. El Nino’s female counterpart, La Nina—a cooler sloshing from east to west—is less well known, and less frequent. But it too can impose a distinctive pattern of weather worldwide.
A moderately strong La Nina began around the middle of 2010 and is now at its peak; it is very likely to last another couple of months, and conceivably into the middle of this year. It can be blamed for floods in Australia, which are typical of La Nina in their location, if not their intensity, and in the Philippines, where ten people had died as of January 4th. But these are far from the first symptoms. The torrential rains which killed hundreds in Venezuela and Colombia in November and December had the little girl’s fingerprints on them, too. The spectacular inundation in Pakistan last August also fits the pattern. …

Information technology goes global: Tanks in the cloud
Computing services are both bigger and smaller than assumed
CLOUDS bear little resemblance to tanks, particularly when the clouds are of the digital kind. But statistical methods used to count tanks in the second world war may help to answer a question that is on the mind of many technology watchers: How big is the computing cloud?
This is not just a question for geeks. Computing clouds—essentially digital-service factories—are the first truly global utility, accessible from all corners of the planet. They are among the world’s biggest energy hogs and thus account for a lot of carbon dioxide emissions. More happily, they allow firms in developing countries to leapfrog traditional information technology (IT) and benefit from advanced computing services without having to build expensive infrastructure. …
