Patterson Hood Talks New Drive-By Truckers Tour, Album

TOUR STARTS SEPTEMBER 17 IN MEMPHIS, TN

Drive-By Trukers

Patterson Hood of the Drive-
By Truckers
issued this statement yesterday:

“Y’ALL:

We leave this week for next leg of DBT The Big To-Do Tour. This will be final USA leg of the tour and it’s a
good one. Our opening act for most of it are The Henry
Clay People
who opened for us
earlier this year and are
Fantastic. We’ll also be playing a couple of dates with our dear friends Hill Country Revue who put on a
kickass show.

Don’t forget, there’s a little more time before the deadline to enter
the Nuci’s Space / Drive-By Truckers Halloween Rock’ N
Raffle
. The Winner will get all inclusive
trip for two to see DBT in our beloved Richmond VA at The National (one of the greatest venues in America) on
Halloween Weekend. Our dear artist Wes Freed (who does all DBT artwork) lives there and we’ll be going
all out celebrating Halloween that Saturday Night. Prizes include airfare, VIP tickets for two (including Meet and
Greet w/ band), hotel accommodations and spending cash. It’s a $2000.00 valued prize and entering is only $5 plus
you’re supporting a great cause. Go to www.rocknraffle.com for more details.

We’ve been wanting to play a Halloween Show in Richmond for years and are finally getting to do it (at least on the
29th and 30th). Richmond is a beautiful and somewhat haunted town that has inspired Edgar Allen Poe, Wes Freed
and certainly us. The National is an amazing venue and Bobby Bare Jr is opening, playing songs off of his stellar new
album A Storm – A Tree – My Mother’s Head which will be on my year end list.

Tickets are selling fast for our upcoming European / UK Tour. The UK dates look like they’ll all sell out in advance
and the European sales are by far our fastest and best yet. It’s been too long and we plan on making it up and then
some.

We’re also gearing up for our year end finale in NYC for NYE. More details to be announced soon. We also recently
added a show in Philly on Jan 1 at the TLA, tickets are on sale now for both shows<www.drivebytruckers.com/tour>.

Oh Yeah, we also finished our next album this week and I can’t wait to tell Y’all all about it very soon.

See You at The Big To-Do!

Volvo’s search for a CEO

It is not official yet but it’s a racing certainty that Stefan Jacoby will be moving from Volkswagen in the US to take up the challenging role of CEO of Volvo Cars when it changes hands from Ford to Geely.

Stephen Odell has apparently preferred to stay with Ford; that’s not too surprising – he appears to be a Ford career man with some thirty years of experience amassed in a variety of posts withing the Blue Oval empire. It will be interesting to see what his next post is within Ford, but I’d guess they have had something lined up for him for a while.

It’s certainly a big step up for Jacoby, but what a job. Not only will he be CEO of Volvo Cars but he will be doing that job as the company comes under the ownership of a Chinese parent. Not only does he have to ensure that the company does all the right things that any car company has to do to survive, but he also has to manage things to the satisfaction of both the Chinese owners and the Swedes, some of whom will be naturally suspicious of the new owner’s motives.

There are bound to be some areas for potential disagreement and the internal cultural side of things might present a bigger challenge than the nuts and bolts of running a car company. The ‘getting to know you’ phase and building confidence on all sides over the next six months will be especially critical.

But if he can crack that so that in three years’ time all parties are happy with the way Volvo Cars is being run, trust not an issue in either Gothenburg or Hangzhou, he’ll have been a wise choice. Would Geely like to have found a suitable Swede to take the helm at Volvo? Maybe, but they don’t grow on trees and Jan Ake Jonsson at Saab said no.

SWEDEN: Jacoby moves from VW to Volvo Cars; Odell back to Ford

Chinese firms can create jobs outside China

Ford’s divestment of its Volvo Cars unit to Geely of China has yet to be completed and there will undoubtedly be some who would rather it isn’t and that Ford will therefore be forced to reconsider the sale.

We’ll see. But one interesting aspect of Ford’s strategy to sell its brands is the ‘carry-over’ issues that arise from heavy product development integration across Ford’s former premium brands. That was at the heart of the PAG strategy of a few years’ back. Share as much as you can with engineering architecture and major components but do that in a manner that does not impair brand differentiation.

Pretty much the entire Volvo range uses Ford platforms and under the terms of the sale to Geely, Ford said it would continue to supply powertrains and platforms to Volvo for an unspecified time.

You can imagine there might be intellectual property concerns in selling to a Chinese maker, so the details of future supply arrangements might be taking a while to work out. And Geely also has to get its finance in place (USD1.8bn) – which it sounds confident about.

The challenge for Geely is to get the right product development infrastructure in place for the next generation of Volvo models. Giving a high degree of autonomy to Gothenburg might be a good way to go. This deal could yet be very good for Volvo Cars in the long-term.

We heard last week how SAIC is maintaining an MG design centre in the UK and the story provides an interesting counterpoint to the previous extremely negative publicity of the wholesale ‘lifting and shifting’ of tooling and everything else from the UK to China after MG Rover hit the buffers and was purchased by Nanjing Auto back in 2005 (Nanjing was subsequently acquired by SAIC).

Chinese companies that want to operate on the international stage are perhaps becoming a little more sophisticated than many in this industry give them credit for. And that will surely be a growing trend over the next five years as the bigger Chinese groups seek out more international sales growth and improved designs and technologies.

Jose Gonzalez’s Rock Band Junip Confirms Tour Dates

JOSE GONZALEZ-FRONTED ROCK BAND SET TO RELEASE RECORDS AND TOUR

NEW SONG AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

Junip

Junip was formed in
Gothenburg, Sweden, in the late ’90s by Jose Gonzalez (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya (drums) and
Tobias Winterkorn (organ, moog). Their first 7″ came out in 2000 and they self-released the Black
Refuge
EP in 2006. RCRDLBL distributed the single “Chickens/Azaleadalen” in 2009. Junip has periodically
gathered together and recorded when schedules permitted, but this is the first time the members will focus
exclusively on the band. An EP and full-length will be released in 2010 with Mute in the U.S. and Canada, City Slang
in Europe, Shock in Australia and Ultra-Vybe in Japan. Global touring will commence this spring. A short American
tour has been confirmed to start on June 8 in Brooklyn, NY, ending in Seattle on June 19. The touring band will add
two members.

Says Gonzalez about the band: “We are really happy to have had the time to write and record these songs and now
are excited to have the opportunity to play them live.”

Junip is now offering a first listen to their new music with a free download of the song “Rope and Summit” here.

Their sound can be familiar to those who have listened to Gonzalez’s critically acclaimed records, but added to the
mix on top of his nylon stringed guitar and distinctive voice are organs, synths and drums. The songs are often
dynamic, melodic and shadowy.

Tour dates are available below.

Jackson Browne & David Lindley Album & International Tour

JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY COME TOGETHER FOR INTERNATIONAL TOUR

THE DUO RELEASE LOVE IS STRANGE, A 2-CD LIVE SET ON MAY 11

Jackson Browne

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. Comprising dates in the U.S. and Europe, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour follows the May 11 release of Love Is Strange (Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006.

The Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour begins with a month-long European leg kicking off in Bristol, UK on June 3. Other highlights include shows at the Stadpark in Hamburg, Germany (6/15), Casino de Paris in Paris, France (6/18), and Hampton Court Palace and Royal Albert Hall in London (6/8 and 6/29, respectively). More European dates will be announced shortly.

Stateside, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour gets underway July 20 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. U.S. summer dates run through the end of September; the first U.S. leg concludes at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta on August 15. Highlights along the way include the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (7/23), the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (7/24), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (8/5), and the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX (8/13).

Accompanying Jackson Browne and David Lindley on tour will be Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by members (since 2008) Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.

On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973′s For Everyman, and on classics including Late For The Sky and The Pretender (the latter two both on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983′s acclaimed El Rayo-X.

Prior to 2010′s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain-in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming 2-CD album Love Is Strange, “En Vivo Con Tino” – featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Set for worldwide release May 11 on Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, Love Is Strange was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter.

In liner notes Browne wrote for Love Is Strange, he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness, nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne. “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ‘stalking the wild Lindley.’”

Rickie Lee Jones Adds Dates

RICKIE LEE JONES ADDS FEBRUARY TOUR DATES IN SUPPORT OF
BALM IN GILEAD

Rickie Lee Jones

Rickie Lee Jones has added additional tour dates in February in support of her recently released album Balm in Gilead. The tour includes stops in Chicago, Seattle and Portland, and the set will feature songs from the new album as well as fan favorites from Jones’ memorable past albums. The New Yorker called Balm in Gilead Jones’ “strongest record of the second half of her career.”

The tour comes on the heels of several TV performances including Jools Holland in the U.K., The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and The Ellen Degeneres Show, where Jones performed a stunning live version of “Old Enough” with Ben Harper. Harper is featured on the new album among other highly talented friends including Jon Brion, Bill Frisell, Victoria Williams, Alison Krauss and the late Vic Chesnutt, who recently passed away.

The release of Balm in Gilead celebrates Rickie Lee Jones’ 30th anniversary of making music and reflects the lifetime work of a woman, whose very name is a genre. With her 1979 self-titled debut album and its top 10 hit, “Chuck E.’s in Love,” Jones made an immediate impact on pop culture beginning with an indelible SNL appearance and an instantaneous Rolling Stone cover, all while winning a Grammy for Best New Artist. Three decades’ worth of acclaimed creative journeys have ensued with both her singing and writing “voice” remaining, despite her pervasive and incalculable influence on two or three entire generations of singer/songwriters, among the most distinctive and instantly recognizable in music.

Dentists can help determine your risk for heart attack

Dentists can do more than just taking care of your oral health – they can help determine your risk for heart attack, according to a new study from the Sahlgrenska Academy.
“Dentists are really proud of their profession and feel no need to encroach upon doctors” territory,” says senior dental officer and professor Mats Jontell at [...]

Ford and Volvo Cars

Seeing the just released pictures of the new S60 this morning has got me thinking. I wonder if Ford may decide to hang on to Volvo Cars after all? Why? Because it is a valuable asset and maybe, just maybe, some at Ford will take the view that there is now no need to sell it (Ford making good turnaround headway lately), that Volvo can be returned to profitability on a reasonable timescale and that ultimately its technology specialisations and engineering architecture sharing with Ford make it preferable to hang on to it.

The brand’s supporters in Dearborn may feel that the situation has changed now that Ford is on a more solid financial footing and automotive demand prospects globally are looking up.

Volvo is also a highly respected global premium brand. Exchange rates and unfavourable model cycles – as well as market geography and the recession – can explain a lot of what’s gone wrong with Volvo profitability in recent years.

I am just speculating, of course. When I met with Mr Mulally recently, he was pretty enthusiastic about One Ford and the rationale behind focusing on a core brand. Fair enough; it has delivered results. And that was a very good bit of business offloading JLR for a few billion just before the recession hit. Along with the assets mortgaging, he seems to have a good sense of timing on the big financial transactions. I asked him about Volvo. He gave a straight bat answer and a few days later Ford said Geely is a preferred bidder.

This is what Lewis Booth said in a statement at that time: “Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ‘One Ford’ strategy.”

“Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand.  But there is much work that needs to be completed in the more substantive discussions that are agreed to take place.  We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions.”

Much work to be done, eh? I bet.

Mr Mulally also highlighted the fact that Ford has continued to invest in Volvo – as evidenced by the new S60.

So sell the brand and technology to a Chinese firm or hang on and realise a return from all that investment in a ‘soft premium’ brand that comes with positive eco/safety values and potentially very good margins. We are at the low point in the economic cycle. In five years time, hanging on to Volvo might look like another smart bit of business.

I wouldn’t mind betting that Ford could ‘do a GM’ and say it has decided to hang on to Volvo Cars after all. But what’s the mad rush? A few more months of uncertainty in Gothenburg before finally and dramatically ‘coming to the rescue’ might also yield plenty of goodwill from both workers and management in Sweden (not to mention the Swedish government). Swedish stakeholders may well conclude that it is ‘better the devil you know’.

For Ford, talking to Geely in advanced discussions over Volvo might uncover some interesting insight into its strategic aims, also. Bonus points.

As I say though, and to be absolutely clear, I am only speculating.

Eriksson lands Notts County role

Sven Goran Eriksson

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has joined Notts County as director of football.

The club’s website said Eriksson would be "joining his long-term assistant Tord Grip who will assume the role of general adviser."

The club added that his remuneration would be determined by the success of the team on the pitch.

Eriksson will take up his new role with immediate effect and will also be a shareholder in the club.

Massive coup

The 61-year-old, who spent five years in charge of England, was sacked as coach of Mexico in April.

Following his dismissal as Mexico manager he had been linked with a return to the Premier League with Portsmouth.

Speaking prior to the appointment being made public, former Notts County player Craig Short said the news took him by surprise when it was broken to him on Tuesday.

"I was absolutely shocked. I thought somebody was pulling my leg, to be honest," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Signing the Swede is a massive coup for the League Two club because of his record of success across European football.

ERIKSSON’S TEAMS

  • Degerfors 1977-78
  • IFK Gothenburg 1979-82
  • Benfica 1982-84
  • Roma 1984-87
  • Fiorentina 1987-89
  • Benfica 1989-92
  • Sampdoria 1992-97
  • Lazio 1997-2001
  • England 2001-06
  • Manchester City 2007-08
  • Mexico 2008-09

Eriksson made a name for himself in his homeland with IFK Gothenburg before moving to Benfica where he won two Portuguese league titles, a Portuguese cup and the team finished runners-up in the Uefa Cup.

A spell in Italy followed before he returned to Benfica, leading them to the final of the European Cup in 1990 where they lost 1-0 to AC Milan.

It was at Italian side Lazio where he achieved arguably his greatest success, winning every major trophy in Italy – including the Serie A title in 2000 for only the second time in the Roman club’s history – and the European Cup Winners Cup.

The Swede became the first foreign manager to take charge of the English national side when he was appointed as Kevin Keegan’s successor in 2001.

He spent five years at the helm, leading England to the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, as well as a place in the last eight at the 2004 European Championships.

Eriksson announced his decision to step down as England manager before the 2006 World Cup in Germany – two years before his contract was due to expire.

A year out of the game followed before he joined Manchester City, where he spent only one season before being replaced by Mark Hughes.

In June 2008 Eriksson replaced Hugo Sanchez in the Mexico job, the legendary striker having been sacked three months earlier, but he lasted less than a year. </p
