Katy Perry Cleavage Photoshopped Smaller In VH1 “Divas” Promo Ads

Katy’s knockers are getting her into trouble — again. Just two months after her ample bosom got her kicked off Sesame Street, top-heavy “California Gurl” Katy Perry is using the power of technology to make her breasts smaller. Perry’s spokestypes ordered some busty publicity shots promoting the singer’s appearance on VH1′s Divas Salute the Troops [...]

Willie Nelson, Warren Haynes Surprise Fans With Election Calls

FANS

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson, ?uestlove of The Roots, and Wayne Coyne of
the Flaming Lips are among the
dozen musicians involved with the “Pledge to Vote” campaign staged by HeadCount, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes electoral
participation. Each artist recorded reminders that will be sent to fans before Election Day via automated phone calls.
In addition, most artist participants will be making live calls – surprising fans who expect to only hear a pre-
recorded message.

“Let’s get some folks cranked up about this,” said The Grateful Dead‘s Bob Weir, a HeadCount board member who will also be personally calling dozens of
voters. “It’s so important that people, particularly young people, are paying attention and voting so a bunch of
cranky old folks don’t steal their future. Hopefully getting a call from a familiar voice will be motivation.”

Close to 25,000 music enthusiasts have already made a “Pledge to Vote” at concerts or on HeadCount’s website, www.headcount.org, requesting a reminder phone call from
one of their favorite artists and affirming that they will vote in November. The full list of artist choices include:

Adam Gardner (Guster)
Matt Berninger (The National)
Warren Haynes (The Allman Bros., Gov’t Mule)
Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits)
Willie Nelson
Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips)

North Coast Music Festival :: 09.03.10-09.05.10 :: Union Park :: Chicago, IL

Pretty Lights by Dave Vann

Hippies, hipsters and hip-hop fans united in Chicago’s aptly named Union Park to celebrate Summer’s Last Stand over Labor Day weekend, making the inaugural North Coast Music Festival one of the most celebrated festivals of the summer.

Independently produced, the North Coast Music Festival featured an eclectic lineup of local and international talent, including hip-hop headliners De La Soul, Lupe Fiasco and distant relatives Nas & Damian Jr. Gong Marley, electronic artists The Chemical Brothers, Paul Van Dyk and Laidback Luke in addition to hometown jam bands Umphrey’s McGee and Philadelphia-based Disco Biscuits. The Red Bull Stage featured up and coming Chicago bands, while bigger Chicago comers like Future Rock, Van Ghost, Loyal Divide and Prob Cause also earned spots on the main stages.

From their use of social media to promote and execute the event, to the on-site live graffiti gallery and art installations, and the iClips live stream, North Coast Music Festival organizers plugged into music lovers’ hearts and minds and managed to find the sweet spot where hip-hop, electronica and jam bands overlap – both on and off line.

With options for every set of star-struck eyes, you’ll hear about different North Coast Festival highlights from every person you ask, but there is no denying that notable collaborations occurred around every corner. You can’t get much better than a Chicago skyline view, three sunny September days and spontaneous songs. But it did! Jay Electronica invited 50+ fans onto the North Stage during his set, dancing and dropping rhymes with them. On the Groupon Stage, De La Soul broke out hits “Me, Myself and I” and “Buddy” and then invited their hip-hop rapper buddy Dres from Black Sheep onstage for a guest performance of “The Choice Is Yours.” And to top Sunday off, Brendan Bayliss of Umphrey’s McGee joined The Disco Biscuits to close out the festival on the Coast Stage.

Behind the scenes, Minister Louis Farrakhan and Damian Marley held a Peace Summit, and finally the Sunday night after party at The Bottom Lounge served double duty as both a celebration of Chicago talent and one of the Festival’s swan songs. Joel Cummins and Brendan Bayliss from Umphrey’s McGee joined Van Ghost for “Mary Jane,” and later Umphrey’s McGee reunited with original drummer Mike Mirro to cover Wilco’s “Jesus, Etc.” Chicago was singing the blues when Mike Berg, Jennifer Hartswick and all of Van Ghost joined fellow Chicago rockers Umphrey’s McGee for a soulful rendition of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” ending the weekend on a perfect note!

“This weekend exceeded my expectations as both a promoter and as a performer,” says Berg. “Being part of North Coast’s launch team and having the honor to share the stage with some of my favorite electronic & rock and roll artists has been a once in a lifetime experience. Well, until we do it again next year!”

Grace Potter by Dave Vann

Fellow event organizer Mike Raspatello had lofty ambitions when he joined up with several other independent promoters to conceptualize and throw this three-day festival, and this weekend’s success surpassed them all. “I think it finally hit a few of us when we looked out into the crowd and saw all the hands in the air, and everyone dancing,” says Raspatello. “We created a festival for the likeminded and diverse fans of Chicago, and they rewarded us and themselves by showing up!” Best of all, Raspatello confirms, “Planning is underway for North Coast Music Festival 2011!”

With over 650 live tweets sent from @NorthCoastFest and a mid-festival Tweet-up held at 6 pm on Saturday, North Coast Fest engaged an estimated 50,000 festival attendees and the online audience in real time all weekend long. Besides communicating essential information, including vast schedule logistics (65 acts on four stages in 2½ days), @NorthCoastFest shared funky fan photos, recruited volunteers in real time, and even went onstage to capture the crowd rocking out!

As North Coast Music Festival’s live tweeter, I ran from stage to stage (read: outlet to outlet) charging my iPhone4 and interacting with festival fans via live tweets and Facebook updates all weekend long, at all hours. As an avid concertgoer, and one who follows along on couch-tour when I can’t make a show, I wanted to give fans both onsite and at home a personalized and informative experience while engaging them in a way I know that bigger brands cannot. People love to get a shout out from brands and bands they care about, and I wanted to capture the palpable excitement in the air, connect and unite fans and build lasting relationships. [Check out Amy's handiwork at her site].

The weather cooperated, the talent brought the heat, and this first year festival made people feel warm and fuzzy by sharing the North Coast Fest excitement in real time. There is no question that North Coast Music Festival is now on the map.

Life is good Festival Preview

By: Dennis Cook
JamBase Associate Editor

Life is good Festival :: 09.11.10-09.12.10 :: Prowse Farm:: Canton, MA

Good music, a good cause and a good attitude. What’s not to like about the inaugural Life is good Festival? Spring forth this coming weekend in Canton, Mass, a suburb of Boston, this event gathers together heavy hitters like Ben Harper & Relentless7, Ziggy Marley, Jason Mraz and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals to help raise much needed funds for the Life is good Kids Foundation, which aids children and their families with life-threatening ailments.

“The 2010 Life is good Festival at Blue Hills is a one-of-a kind event. No other festival in the country can offer the talent and entertainment experience that families and music fans alike will find at the 2010 Life is good Festival – all while helping to raise funds for kids facing life-threatening challenges,” said Bert Jacobs, Chief Executive Optimist for Life is good. “We have some of the very best performers coming together and we are going to have a great time while we raise more than $1 million dollars for the Life is good Kids Foundation.”

On top of being a positivity charged fine use of one’s dollars, this festival has some great musical talent over and above the top names. Here’s a few suggestions if you make your way to Blue Hills on Saturday and/or Sunday.

1. The Sippy Cups:: Saturday & Sunday :: 11:30 AM-12:30 PM :: “Good Kids” Stage

Kids music is largely a wretched hive of sub-par crapola (trust the parent of a 3-year-old boy), but Bay Area gems The Sippy Cups are fun, clever AND good musicians who don’t pander to kids so much as engage them in a cool way. The Cups open musical festivities both days and it’d be tough to start your ‘goodness’ on better footing – whether you have kids along or not!

2. Eli “Paperboy” Reed & The True Loves :: Saturday :: 12:30-1:15 PM :: “Life Is Good” Stage

Real soul music is making a small comeback in 2010, and this Massachusetts native is part of the cresting wave that’s bringing back the quality and vibe of vintage Motown, Stax/Volt, etc. but in a living, breathing way rather than a nostalgia exercise.

3. They Might Be Giants :: Saturday :: 2:30-3:30 PM :: “Good Kids” Stage

Speaking of kids music that doesn’t suck it sideways, TMBG have carved quite the nifty niche for themselves inside the Disney empire in recent years AND done so with real dignity – a trick the Mouse Factory makes VERY hard. Like Ween’s good-natured twin, the Giants are masters of all styles and know a hook when they find one. They also play on Sunday, 1:00-2:00 pm, on the same stage. Go and yell, “Istanbul!” at them and see what happens!

4. Toubab Krewe :: Sunday :: 1:15-2:30 PM :: “Good Vibes” Stage

Each time onstage is different yet consistently electrifying for audiences and players alike with Toubab Krewe, who dabble in a bit of this and that to mold something rhythmic, dense and engaging that’s as original as anything out there today.

5. Brett Dennen :: Sunday :: 4:45-5:45 PM :: “Good Vibes” Stage

A spot of sensitive singer-songwriter fare always goes down so, so well around sundown, and there’s not many better proponents of this stuff than Dennen. Grab a piece of grass, lay back and let him float you away on wings of song. Kinda corny but sounds nice, eh?

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals | Secret Show Review

By: Shayna Hodkin

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals :: 08.19.10 :: Bryant Park :: New York, NY

Grace Potter by Dino Perrucci

“Where else would we rather be? Nowhere.” Grace Potter wasn’t the only one who felt this way last Thursday night. The audience was full of fortunate people, feeling like winners, who were all incredibly lucky to be where they were.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals‘ last-minute Thursday night show, hosted by The Artist’s Den, was packed. An announcement about ticketing for the secret show was released Tuesday by Relix Magazine, where fans were able to submit their names all day Tuesday and Wednesday to a free ticket raffle and the winners were emailed the event details on Wednesday night. The announcement soon ended up all over Twitter and music blogs, and by Wednesday’s end, hundreds of names had been submitted for a tight guest list. Showtime Thursday proved Potter’s popularity in New York with a line that stretched for three blocks, moving into the rest of the park and its surrounding area.

The show kicked off with the fitting “Hot Summer Night.” Bassist Catherine Popper and drummer Matt Burr threw down a funky rhythm section until Potter, looking like a goddess with her white dress and long hair, jumped on stage with her hands in the air and her voice bringing everyone all over the park to their feet. The band then moved into some older material, with a kickin’ “Ah, Mary” that set the tone for what Potter described as “the saddest happy breakup song,” “Goodbye Kiss,” from the band’s self-titled album released this past June on Hollywood Records.

The selection of old and new material, along with some narration by Potter, established a pretty clear theme for the setlist, namely heartbreak that is always followed by a strong return. “That Phone”, “Apologies” and “Low Road” highlighted not only Potter’s incredibly soulful chops but also her ability to engage a crowd; Potter’s banter with the band is always witty, and her choice of stories is always relatable. New Yorkers can be a tough crowd, but you would never guess Potter was from anywhere else. She loves New York, even though sometimes there’s dog poop on stage, a problem the band faced Thursday night with good humor. Only in New York, Popper lamented, will you get dog poo on your shoes when you’re onstage at your own concert.

Nocturnals by Dino Perrucci

The enthusiasm of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is undeniable. Though the show was scheduled from 7:30-8:45, the music didn’t stop until closer to 9:30. The band was having a great time, and the audience was sucked in; the venue stayed full from long before the band took the stage until the end of the encore’s fourth and final song. The eagerness and love of everyone onstage was contagious, and there was no way to avoid catching some of their energy.

“Sexy” is the word that most accurately describes everything about Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Even when she isn’t making out with Catherine Popper onstage – although it’s definitely a plus when she is – she and the band pour a passion into the show that leaves the audience a sweaty, exhausted, fulfilled mess. Songs like “Paris,” “Oasis,” “Medicine” and “Nothing But The Water” highlight Potter’s unapologetic confidence, while also spurs the rest of the band to showcase their own talents and extremely good looks. When it came time for the drum jam, the whole band intertwined over the drum kit, and the sheer amount of physical attractiveness onstage was slightly overwhelming. Somehow all six band members won the genetic lottery, so their live show is a pleasure even for the deaf.

The spirit of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals brought a breath of country air to a stagnant New York City summer. The surprise, secret nature of the show lent a VIP feel to a great venue and consistently incredible live act. If summer has to end, this is a great way to blow it out.

Setlist:
Hot Summer Night, Ah, Mary, Goobye Kiss, Only Love, Tiny Light, Apologies, One Short Thing, Low Road, That Phone, Oasis, White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane cover),
Paris (Ooh La La), Medicine > Drum Jam. E: Heart of Glass (Blondie cover), Stop the Bus, Big White Gate, Nothing But the Water Part I > Nothing But the Water Part II > Drum Jam

Questionnaire: Scott Tournet of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last
time we heard from Big Light.

While it’s hard to tear one’s attention away from the heavy breathing, gospel-tinged,
rising hemline leader of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, any red blooded rock ‘n’ roll
fanatic will likely snap their head around to guitarist Scott Tournet. His playing
demands one’s focus, the sort of beefy, fast streaming, foot-on-the-amp style that made
ears prick up when a young Marc Ford joined The Black Crowes in 1992. There’s also more than a
touch of genuine guitar heroes like the young Eric Clapton and Rory Gallagher, not to
mention modern innovators like Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Nels Cline, in Tournet, who
provides a lot of the muscle in the Nocturnals, where he’s increasingly savvy about the
ways of pop-rock picking.

However, for a real dose of contemporized denim ‘n’ suede rock one needs to explore
Tournet’s other labor of love Blues & Lasers, where he’s joined by fellow Nocturnals guitarist
Benny Yurco and the pair shows off what fine, fine songwriters and singers they are
in addition to the smiling shredding throughout. With no disrespect intended towards his
work with Potter, it’s in Blues & Lasers that one recognizes what a heavy hitter Tournet
is, a craftsmanship-minded musician with a slippery, gently adventurous edge who writes
the kind of songs Thin Lizzy and Robin Trower would have killed to pen back in the day.
Blues & Lasers’ sophomore album, After All We’re Only Human,
released in May, is a commanding set that establishes the group in a very tangible,
exciting way. It’s a far cry from the latest self-titled Grace and the Nocturnals album,
showcasing Tournet and Yurco’s grittier, free-flight sides in a wholly satisfying way.
Like Tournet himself, it smacks of great things to come while being perfectly freakin’
tasty in the here & now. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Scott had to say to our inquiries.

Scott Tournet with Blues & Lasers

Instrument of choice: voice, pen, guitar, harmonica, effects, noise, soul

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Honesty to yourself. The music or lyrics themselves don’t need to be specifically
“honest” though. Look at Zappa or Townes Van Zandt. They both made shit up, but they
were completely honest to their vision and art.

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
The Greatest American Hero theme songhere…lol…7″ vinyl. I’d put
my cape on and sing along until one day my whole family caught me doing it. I was
mortified – my first encounter with “public opinion”.

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
It’s been out for a while but Spiritualized Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In
Space
really got me. That’s the kind of album I continue to aspire to make.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
A cowboy or a professional baseball player. Got to have options.

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
Headlining in a theater that holds anywhere from 500-3,000 people. The sound is great,
the audience all have good enough seats. You get to play for as long as you want. Love
it.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
HmmmÂ…some people already know, but I hope that in the next few years more people will find
out that I’m more than just a guitarist. I feel honored that people listen to any music
that I’m a part of, but I really want more people hear my songs/lyrics. I used to only
want to be a guitarist, but in the past 8 years or so I’ve had a burning desire to be
heard as a songwriter/lyricist. Within my musicianship, I hope more people can hear that
there’s more going on than just blues rock/classic rock. I get lumped in that vein a lot
and a lot of my looping, noise, sheets of sound stuff, harmonica, lap steel, etc. gets
overlooked.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Harmony

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland. Hendrix was my first love and I feel a very,
very strong kinship with him. The mainstream just thinks of Hendrix as this wild/drug
taking guy who played the guitar with his teeth and played the “Star Spangled Banner” at
Woodstock. He was so much more than that. Jimi was so overlooked as a
singer/songwriter/lyricist/producer. Electric Ladyland has everything – great
songs, dreamy moods, amazing/ahead of its time production, genius guitar playing,
tasteful/eccentric instrumentation, etc, etc.

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
The catering at the Greek Theatre. The chef is Italian and she cooked up incredible pasta
with red meat sauce and garlic bread, salad and the works. And then came the cheesecake.
Out of this world. I was still burping during the show.

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
The south. People down south are not afraid to get down. I love it.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Losing track of the days and the place that I’m in. Also stopping all communication with
my friends and family. I usually lose my cell phone halfway through tour.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Eagles. They can fly.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
Two trannies and a midget…I’ll leave the rest to imagination.

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals Sexy Paris Video

IF SHE WAS A BLADE SHE’D SHAVE YOU SMOOTH

The strongest cut from the recently released eponymous album from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is the new single with a pretty dang hot accompanying video involving a sultry Grace and a lightly sleazed up Nocturnals with some burlesque companions at Cafe Club Fais Do-Do in Los Angeles. “Paris (Oh Oh La La)” is like “Lady Marmalade” with a hard rock infusion, a bit of salivating, forthright sexual aggression that’s really satisfying. Please to enjoy!

The band will perform “Paris” on Jimmy Kimmel Live next Monday, July 26.
