Grateful Dead: Europe Â’72 Tour Box Set

INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED, LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT DEAD.NET AND SHIPS IN SEPTEMBER

sketch of new box set

Grateful Dead slipped the
shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-
show run spawned Europe ’72, a live triple album that remains one of the band’s best-selling and most
beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour
with Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings, an individually numbered, limited edition collection
that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the
Grateful Dead’s greatest tour. The box set ships in September.

Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones
prevalently used at the time. The travel
chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay
by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to
the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and
Steve Silberman.

Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is
mixing each
show from the original 16-track recordings.

Due to ship in September, the boxed set is available exclusively from Dead.net, which is taking orders now. The
price of the collection is $450, which works out to the remarkably low price of about $20 for each show, or roughly
the cost of a transatlantic flight from New York City to London in 1972 (price of time machine not included).

The first 3,000 fans to order will have
their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1,
Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum
of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Orders will no longer be taken at some date (to be
determined) later in the summer.

The tour offers a snapshot of a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums—
Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a
year since
the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been
broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as
a member of the touring band.

There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 and during the spring of
’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble On Rose,” “One More
Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen‘s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger
(Two
Souls In Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were
interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar
Magnolia,” “Bertha,” and “Not Fade Away”—and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers—the Europe
’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One,” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat
Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight,” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.”

Grateful Dead Digital Games

A GRATEFUL DEAD WORLD OF GAMING COMING IN AUGUST 2011

The Grateful Dead

Rhino Entertainment and Curious Sense have announced that they have been granted the exclusive worldwide rights
to develop online and mobile games centered around The Grateful Dead.

“Grateful Dead has always looked for inventive ways to embrace new technology,” says David Lemieux,
archivist for Grateful Dead. ”We’ve found a great partner in Curious Sense. They are lifelong Dead Heads who have
some brilliant plans to take our fans on a very cool journey. We can’t wait for everyone to check out the fun new
toys we are building.”

A statement on the Curious Sense website reads:

Within seconds of entering the Grateful Dead Game, Dead Heads, and new fans alike, will be drawn into an
experience that will adapt to the type of visitor they are. From the first click the player will enter into a universe of
Grateful Dead music, sounds, and visuals. Games and activities will reside within several regions of the World, each
designed according to a theme from Grateful Dead lore – the Old West, Space, San Francisco, Giza. At every turn
whimsy, surprises, pranks, and miracles may be presented. We’re planning to design an interactive masterpiece,
worthy of America’s most important band. (Yes, we are some very excited Dead Heads!!)

With a projected August release date, developers are “mining the music for themes and words and characters and
settings that would adapt well to games and then looking at the best types of games out here and utilizing them,”
says Curious Sense founder Adam Blumenthal.

Blumenthal continues, “I know that I want to create the ability for players to feel like they are playing in the band.
That they are sort of jamming with them, but in a way that is different from a way that is done in Rock Band or Guitar
Hero.”

Grateful Dead: 30 Free Track Downloads at Dead.net

NEW TRACK POSTED EACH DAY AT NOON EST

Grateful Dead

Starting on the Day of the Dead (November 1), dead.net, the
official website of the Grateful Dead, will kick off 30 Days of Dead. Every day throughout the
entire month of November, the Grateful Dead will post a different live track on dead.net that will be free to download
for one day only. The band’s archivist Dave Lemieux hand-picked each of the 30 career-spanning tracks from the
Dead’s extensive vault. Each free song download will be a high-quality (320 kps) mp3 and nearly all of the 30
tracks are previously unreleased soundboard recordings.

30 Days of Dead kicks off with a free download of “New Speedway Boogie,” the studio version of which was
included on Workingman’s Dead, one of two iconic Dead albums celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year
(American Beauty being the other).

In addition to the free music, 30 Days of Dead will also include daily and weekly contests. When a new track
is posted on dead.net each day at approximately Noon EST, the first person to correctly identify both the complete
date (Month, Day, Year) and venue of the performance in the comments section will win their choice of any copy
from the Dead’s ongoing Road Trips series.

All fans who post at least one correct answer during each week will be entered into a weekly sweepstakes to win a
Grateful Dead prize pack. Some of the titles included in the prize packs will be the recently released Warner Bros.
Studio Album Vinyl Box and the Formerly The Warlocks boxed set.

Grateful Dead Warner Bros. Vinyl Box

AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 21 FROM GRATEFUL DEAD/RHINO; DELUXE BOX SET FEATURES FIVE WARNER
BROS. RECORDS STUDIO ALBUMS

Grateful Dead

Between 1967 and 1970, the Grateful
Dead
recorded five studio albums for Warner Bros. Records that formed the psychedelic canon on which
the band’s live legend was built. The albums spotlighted the early core lineup of Jerry Garcia, Ron “Pigpen”
McKernan, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann,
and Mickey Hart.

Grateful Dead and Rhino will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Workingman’s Dead and American
Beauty
with The Warner Bros. Studio Albums, a five-LP boxed set available on September 21.
The collection contains The Grateful Dead (1967), Workingman’s Dead, and American Beauty (1970), plus
the original mixes for Anthem Of The Sun (1968) and Aoxomoxoa (1969), available on vinyl for the
first time in nearly 40 years.

Available for a list price of $134.98, the set offers detailed replicas of the original albums housed in a hard-shell
case that protects and stores the music with the accompanying 12″ x 12″ book including unpublished photos and
new liner notes by Blair Jackson. To ensure the highest degree of quality, the albums were pressed on 180-gram
vinyl at RTI using lacquers cut from the original analog masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.

Those who pre-order from Dead.net will receive an exclusive reproduction of a rare 1968 7″ single (in a picture
sleeve) that features the studio version of “Dark Star” (b/w “Born Cross-Eyed”) that clocks in at a concise 2:38.
Dead.net pre-orders also receive a reproduction of a rare 1967 promotional poster for the first album from the
Warner Bros. Records archive.

The original mixes for Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa—featured here for the first time since they were released
—went out of circulation in 1972 and 1971 respectively. Garcia and Lesh revisited Aoxomoxoa two years after its
release in an effort to cut through the dense mix, which was a result of the band’s extensive experimenting in the
studio with one of the first 16-track recorders. The overhaul changed the album’s sound significantly, including the
end of “Doin’ That Rag,” which originally closed with an a cappella vocal coda that was later removed.

11 Reasons to be Cheerful

We tend to focus on our problems in life and to take for granted our blessings and achievements. It is natural that we think about the difficulties we face and the challenges we have to overcome but there is a real danger that when we do this we can become become weighed down with worry or negative feelings.  It is good to step back for a moment from our day to day cares and to list all the things that are going well in our life.  It will give us a positive lift and help to put our problems into perspective.  Here is one way to count your blessings.

1. Life.  Start by giving yourself one point for being alive. It may sound silly but wait a moment.  Your life represents a tiny interlude between the vast times when you did not exist and when you will be dead.  You are in that tiny moment right now and you can do things to change your life so be thankful for that at least.

2. Health.  If you are healthy and do not suffer from any major diseases or afflictions mark up another point.  We take our health for granted and only realise how important it is when we become ill.  Most of us have some minor ailments but if you are reasonably healthy then you are much better off than people suffering from serious illnesses and you should be deeply thankful.

3. Relationship. If you are in a stable relationship with another person then chalk up a point.  If you can honestly say that you love them and they love you then give yourself a bonus point.  Many people search for love without success so if you have found it then cherish it and count yourself lucky.

4. Family. If you have children, brothers or sisters or your parents alive then add another point.  They may be frustrating and they will have their faults but they are your flesh and blood.  Whatever happens in life your family remains your family and if you have them around you then you should be thankful for that – just ask someone who has lost family members.

5. Work.  Give yourself a point if you are in work or full-time education.  Even if it is dull and unfulfilling at times you are still better off than the many people who are desperately seeking employment.

6. Value. If you can honestly say that you are doing something that makes life better for other people and adds real value then give yourself a point.  This might involve your work, your volunteering, your parenting or some other aspect of your life.  Are you making the world a better place?  If not then this is an area to think about.

7. Achievement. Can you look back on something that you are proud of?  Did you achieve something worthwhile?  This might be at work, in sport, with your family or something else.  If you can you point to something that people would admire then give yourself another point.

8. Future – 1. Do you have something good to look forward to?  This might be a holiday, a promotion, a wedding or just a trip to the cinema with your partner. If you have something good coming up then think about it, smile and add another point.

9. Future – 2. Do you have a plan for your improvement and success?  This might include your career, your education, your finances and your relationships.  If you have a plan then add a point.  You are better off than most of the population.  People with plans generally do better than those who just muddle along.

10. Financial security. Are you financially secure?  Are you living within your means?  Can you see a reasonably prosperous future?  If so you are much better placed than people who are burdened with excessive debts and who struggle to make ends meet.  You should get some satisfaction from that and you can add a point.

11. Friendship. Do you have one or more good friends who you can share your joys and problems with?  Is there someone whose company you enjoy and with whom you can have a laugh?  If so give yourself a final point.

Add up your total. How many points did you get?  The maximum is 12.  Eight or over is a good score.  Now take a moment to express thanks for your success and good fortune.  You have a lot to be grateful for.

Grateful Dead Bring Philly 1989 Show To Big Screen

GRATEFUL DEAD BRING PHILADELPHIA SHOW FROM 1989 TO THE BIG SCREEN

Screenings Of Upcoming Crimson, White & Indigo Set Scheduled To Begin April 13

3-CD/1-DVD Set Of The Dead’s Previously Unreleased July 7, 1989 Philadelphia Concert
At JFK Stadium Available April 20 From Grateful Dead/Rhino

Jerry Garcia by Blakesberg

The Grateful Dead were enjoying a late-career renaissance in 1989 when the band steamed into Philadelphia on one of the hottest days of the summer to play the last concert ever at John F. Kennedy Stadium. The July 7 show in the City of Brotherly Love highlights the band’s exuberant resurgence, a peak that rivals any that came before it.

Prior to the upcoming release of this show as a 3-CD/1-DVD set, several screenings of the live performance are set to take place at theaters across the country, beginning with a screening at the Ambler Theater in Philadelphia on April 13. See below for full screening schedule.

Rhino salutes life, liberty, and the pursuit of “hippieness” with a collection that includes every note from this epic show on three CDs and one DVD. The DVD captures the entire concert, shot from an amazing multi-camera perspective by the same crew that shot the legendary Truckin’ Up To Buffalo DVD. CRIMSON, WHITE & INDIGO: PHILADELPHIA, JULY 7, 1989, will be available April 20 from Grateful Dead/Rhino at all retail outlets, including Dead.net, for a suggested list price of $39.98. A digital version featuring all of the audio content will also be available.

The 19 tracks on 3 CDs – all but one previously unreleased-were mixed from the 24-track analog master tapes, enhanced using the latest audio engineering technology and presented here in HDCD. The set comes packaged with a booklet of rare photos and an essay by Steve Silberman, who co-produced the Grateful Dead’s boxed set of previously unreleased recordings, So Many Roads (1965-1995).

The Philadelphia concert offers a snapshot of the Dead’s 1989 tour, where the band played to some of its biggest audiences ever, a result of the group’s only Top 40 hit, “Touch Of Grey” from 1987′s In The Dark. During this tour, the band was recording the follow-up to that album, Built To Last, which is an important reason why the jamming heard here is particularly fluid and concise. In fact, the band played a pair of songs from the upcoming album, the aching ballad “Standing On The Moon” and the poignant
“Blow Away,” a song co-written by keyboardist Brent Mydland, who sadly died a year later.

The band helped raze the aging stadium, thundering through “Hell In A Bucket,” “Little Red Rooster,” and Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again.” Many sitting at the north end of the open-air stadium recall the concrete bleachers trembling during Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann‘s drum duet in the second set. The show closed with another Dylan cover, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” the last song ever performed at JFK.

When this show was recorded, the band included guitarist Jerry Garcia, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Brent Mydland, and guitarist Bob Weir.

The Archivist will be part of a dynamic, collegial, and highly motivated department dedicated to building, preserving, promoting, and providing maximum access both physically and virtually to one of the Library’s most exciting and unique collections, The Grateful Dead Archive (GDA). The UCSC University Library utilizes innovative approaches to allow the discovery, use, management, and sharing of information in support of research, teaching, and learning.

Grateful Dead Archive:

The Grateful Dead Archive documents the band’s creative activity and influence in contemporary music history from 1965 to 1995, including the phenomena of the Deadheads, and the band’s highly unusual and successful musical business ventures. The Archive contains original documents, clippings, artifacts, photography, posters, audio and video recordings, publications about the Dead and its individual members, its tours and performances, recordings and productions, and business. Correspondence and art contributed over the years by Deadheads are also part of the Archive.

The Archive, which is approximately 600 linear feet, is physically housed in McHenry Library’s Special Collections & Archives department. A dedicated area, “Dead Central” (soon to be opened in the newly renovated McHenry Library) will offer the public opportunities for listening and viewing material from the Archive. Material digitized from the Archive will be made in the Library’s CONTENTdm digital collections system and in a separate, Omeka-powered system will form the basis of Virtual Terrapin Station, a web-based digital collections system which will provide access to digitized materials from the collection while at the same time allowing social interaction and the exchange of data with and from the public. The Finding Aid for the GDA will be submitted to the CDL’s Online Archive of California, and bibliographic records for all commercial GDA publications will appear in Library’s local catalog, CruzCat, and in OCLC’s WorldCat.

Under the general direction of the Head of Special Collections and Archives, the GDA Archivist will provide managerial and curatorial oversight of the GDA, plan for and supervise the physical and digital processing of all Archive related material, and promote the GDA to the public and facilitate its use by scholars, fans, and students.

The position is available for March 1, 2010.

BOB WEIR AND PHIL LESH IN MANHATTAN FOR NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY FUNDRAISER OCTOBER 21

The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead will be honored in New York City today (Monday, October 19) when the Empire State Building is lit up with special tie-dye colors celebrating the group’s appearance in the city later that week. The color scheme will represent the group’s iconic imagery and psychedelic influences.

On Wednesday, October 21, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will attend a fundraiser at the New York Historical Society as part of an exhibit celebrating the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band. The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society traces the career and achievements of a band that became one of the significant cultural forces in 20th century America. Through a wealth of original artwork and documents including concert and recording posters, album art, large-scale marionettes and other stage props, banners and decorated fan mail, the exhibition will explore the musical creativity and influence of the Grateful Dead from 1965 to 1995, the sociological phenomenon of the Dead Heads and the enduring impact of the Dead’s pioneering approach to the music business. Materials in the exhibition will be drawn almost exclusively from the extraordinary holdings of the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California Santa Cruz, established in 2008.

The Grateful Dead: Winterland, June 1977

THE DEAD SATISFY THE SAN FRAN FAITHFUL

Winterland, June 1977: The Complete Recordings Spotlights the Grateful Dead’s
Transcendent Three-Night Run in a Nine-Disc Boxed Set Remastered in HDCD

The Grateful Dead rolled into San Francisco riding a long streak of hot-damn shows during the spring of 1977, a legendary road trip that many Deadheads agree was a tour for the ages. The band didn’t disappoint the hometown faithful when it took to the stage June 7-9 at Winterland Arena – the Dead’s spiritual home – for one of the group’s most beloved hometown runs. As veteran Dead archivist David Lemieux puts it, “A lot of Deadheads say ’77 is their favorite year. And of these shows, the first night is a Top 15, the second is a Top 10, and the third is a Top 3.”

WINTERLAND, JUNE 1977: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS packs every note from those three transcendent nights into nine discs that encompass what might be some of the greatest live Dead ever. A worthy successor to last year’s extraordinary Winterland 1973 collection, this set surges and sighs with the inspired sound of rock’s most unpredictable dance band hard at work, in peak communion.

WINTERLAND, JUNE 1977 is presented in HDCD, mastered from the original soundboard reels and enhanced using cutting-edge audio engineering technology including Plangent Processes’ state-of-the-art audio-time alignment procedure. Handsomely packaged in a custom archival box, the set contains 68 previously unreleased tracks as well as an extensive, full-color booklet featuring rare photos, a thoughtful essay by Rolling Stone senior editor and Winterland veteran David Fricke, and a few other surprise goodies.

On sale now exclusively from www.dead.net for $99.99, WINTERLAND, JUNE 1977 will be shipped by the end of September. Fans who order the set before then will also receive an exclusive bonus disc featuring more than an hour of unreleased music recorded live May 12, 1977 at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre.

At the time of these recordings, the band included guitarist Jerry Garcia, singer Donna Jean Godchaux, keyboardist Keith Godchaux, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, bassist Phil Lesh, and guitarist Bob Weir.
