The Greek parliament has ratified Serbia’s Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the European Union, the Greek embassy in Belgrade announced today.
Greek Ambassador to Serbia Dimostenis Stoidis pointed out that the ratification is a practical expression of the commitment with which Greece has supported Serbia’s EU membership, as part of its Agenda 2014 initiative, designed to accelerate the European integration of the countries in the Western Balkans.

Bulgarian and Greek police have arrested 17 persons suspected of baby trafficking.
The arrests came as a result of cooperation between Bulgarian and Greek police and judiciaries. The operation was launched after a Bulgarian woman had contacted the police.

Bomb disposal experts have disabled a device sent to the Greek embassy in Rome, euronews reports. Police say it was similar to two parcels which exploded at two other embassies in the city last week.
Greek strike turns violent
Police have fired tear gas outside the Greek parliament as clashes broke out with rioters in a protest against a new wave of austerity measures. Protesters set garbage bins on fire outside two luxury hotels in central Athens and threw stones at riot police during the union-backed demonstration that attracted some 15,000 participants.
Croat hooligans burn Greek bus
Unknown hooligans, most likely Dinamo Zagreb FC fans, have attacked and burned a Greek bus. The bus was used by the visiting supporters of Greece’s PAOK FC.
Greek FM: Serbia in EU in 2018
Foreign ministers of Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece expressed support to the EU integration of the Western Balkans at a trilateral meeting in Sofia on Saturday.
Bulgarian FM Nikolay Mladenov, Serbian FM Vuk Jeremić and Greek FM Dimitris Droutsas also adopted a joint declaration on the European future of the region.
Greek budget deficit worsens
Greece’s 2009 budget deficit was worse than previously calculated, making it the largest in the eurozone, new figures have shown.
The country’s deficit last year stood at 15.4% of its annual economic output, said Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office.

A regional journalist association has expressed concern at a recent incident in Greece targeting reporters.
The South and East Europe Media Organization (SEEMO) said it was concerned at the recent assault on photo-reporters and foreign press journalists by security forces during the strikes in front of the Acropolis, in Athens, Greece.
Greek PM: Serbia’s future is in EU
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said in Belgrade that Serbia’s future is in the EU and that Serbia needs to become a member as soon as possible.
At the end of an event called Serbia on the Road to Europe – 10 Years Later, Papandreou said that in 2000, the people of Serbia chose democracy, in a peaceful way.

Singapore-listed Chinese shipbuilders outperforming rest of market on hopes for increased orders following China’s plan for U$5 billion ($6.6 billion) fund to help Greek shipping companies buy Chinese vessels, says Dow Jones.

Greek FM: Open up EU path to Serbia
Greek FM Dimitris Droutsas tokd the UN General Assembly that a path for beginning of Serbia’s accession negotiations with the EU should be kept open and clear. He pointed out that acceptance of his country’s initiative to have all Balkans countries in the EU by 2014 would contribute to progress and stabilization of the region.
Defense minister meets with Greek counterpart
Serbia’s Defence Minister Dragan Å utanovac met his Greek colleague Evangelos Venizelos in Thessaloniki on Saturday. The two agreed it was important for both countries to work towards peace and stability in the region.
Greece contributed to success of joint resolution
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou stated that Greece had contributed to the shaping up of the Serbia-EU joint resolution. He said that Greece had a big role in paving the way for resolving the issue.
Greek position on Kosovo unchanged
Greece has stated that its position on Kosovo is well known and that it remains stable, Greek media have reported. “We will continue to invest efforts, together with our European Union partners, aiming at the European integration of the region,†spokesman of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs Grigoris Delavekouras told a press conference.

Greek Deputy FM meets with K. Albanian leaders
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said that Greece is ready to support cooperation between Serbia and Kosovo. Droutsas, who left Belgrade for Priština after meeting with official in Belgrade over the last two days, met with Kosovo Albanian President and Prime Minister Fatmir Sejdiu and Hashim Thaci in Priština.
President meets with Greek Deputy FM
President Boris Tadić met with Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas, who is visiting Belgrade before traveling to Priština. Tadić told Droutsas that Serbia consulted European partners before submitting its draft resolution for Kosovo to the UN General Assembly, adding that there were no official grievances regarding the resolution expressed by EU officials.
