Sat Eye Candy: Guns NÂ’ Roses

GOOD LORD, THEY WERE ONCE TITANS!

Rock is full of tantalizing “what ifs” but perhaps no single band has inspired more of them than Guns N’ Roses. What if Axl Rose hadn’t become a money squandering, megalomaniac control freak? What if Izzy Stradlin had stayed involved? What if the band that made Appetite For Destruction had gotten to evolve longer before the gold toilets and limos arrived? Ask anyone who was ground zero when the band roared out of Los Angeles in 1987 and the general consensus was one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll outfits ever was being born. But unlike the Stones, Zeppelin, et al. it quickly descended into madness, acrimony, self-indulgence and Olympian scale ego. It’s not to say that Use Your Illusion isn’t brilliant in parts, but in a single album’s time the over-tinkering fussiness that marks almost all of their subsequent work was already evident. The rawness and possessed invention of Appetite never surfaced again, devoured by the fame machine, lawyers, overblown, under-thought concepts and their own big, dumb mouths. And still, there’s more than a few who wonder what might have been for G n’ R if they’d been strong or smart to follow a different path. Would that band have brought us their own Sticky Fingers or Houses of the Holy? Might they still be making rock that reconnects one to the lascivious juju of Chuck Berry, Johnny Rotten and Elvis? It’s a mighty wistful “what if.”

Today is original Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler’s 46th birthday. It’s a bit of a surprise that he’s still with us at all given the life he’s lived, but one thing he’ll always have is being part of one of THE great moments in rock history, brief as it was. Truly a band that internalized the whole “better to burn out than fade away” mentalityÂ…and then lost control of the monster, which limps along still, powered by the residual love and excitement that remains from their late 80s heyday. Still, there’s some real moments and we’re gonna celebrate a few in honor of Steven’s bday. (Dennis Cook)

Where better to begin our stroll down seedy memory lane than “Paradise City,” a tune with all the sack swinging perfection of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” or “Black Dog.”

The creepy tingle that went up our collective spine the first time we heard this one is impossible to shake, the whole enterprise ringing with menace and bad intent, the sound of dreams crashing down into harsh reality.

An ugly little gem that evokes both 70s Stones and the New York Dolls.

Oh, Big Hair Axl, you were fun and wrote great, gritty love songs!

A cautionary tale about heroin that’s still so catchy it makes you understand on a non-verbal level why people dance with ol’ Mister.

Like most really great songs, the tunes off Appetite have a lot of malleability. The bands early dip into acoustic territory was one of the best things they ever did.

The ladies were right at the core of early Guns N’ Roses, represented by some of the rankest misogyny ever and an almost school boy sincerity and sweetness. We conclude our lil’ salute to the G n’ R that might have been with two about women, one sour and one as sweet as its title.

Lone madmen without guns

A pattern of senseless attacks in China’s schools

ALL month schools in China have been on what the state-controlled press calls a “red alert” for possible attacks on pupils by intruders. In one city police have orders to shoot perpetrators on sight. Yet a spate of mass killings and injuries by knife or hammer-wielding assailants has continued. To the government’s consternation, some Chinese have been wondering aloud whether the country’s repressive politics might be at least partly to blame.

In the latest reported incident, on May 12th, seven children were hacked to death at a kindergarten in the city of Hanzhong in the northern province of Shaanxi. Twenty others were injured. It was one of half a dozen such cases at schools across China in less than two months. Three attacks occurred on successive days in late April, when more than 50 children were injured. The deadliest killed eight children in the southern province of Fujian on March 23rd. The killer was executed on April 28th. …

Nawaz turns his guns on Asif

ISLAMABAD – Major Opposition party Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has warned the PPP-led Government of grave consequences if it did not resolve the judicial crisis immediately by withdrawing notifications about Lahore High Court’s Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif and Justice Saqib Nisar.
Insiders informed TheNation that partyÂ’s Central Organising Committee (COC), which met in the chair of PML-N Quaid Mian Nazaw Sharif on emergency basis here at the Punjab House on Sunday, discussed at length the judicial crisis that started on Saturday and decided a timeline for the Government to resolve the issue.
“The party has decided a timeline for the Government and will unveil it soon,” a participant of the meeting told TheNation, requesting not to be named, in a reference to the party’s future course of action.
Another participant of the meeting who also requested anonymity said the meeting had decided to take on the ruling PPP, particularly the President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani for their illegal and unconstitutional actions which led to the judicial crisis.
According to the informed sources, the meeting had brainstormed the issue with over a dozen legal and constitutional experts and decided to condemn the illegal and unconstitutional steps taken by the Government.
Later, the PML-N Quaid while addressing a crowded press conference declared President Zardari as grave threat to democracy. “Zardari is doing biggest disservice to democracy,” Nawaz said, adding that yesterday’s incident was an action replay of the dictator. “It were people of Pakistan and not the Government who restored the judiciary.”
He also blamed Prime Minister Gilani for deviating from his commitment with him during their recent meeting that Government would implement the recommendation of the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Nawaz Sharif demanded of the Government to withdraw the notifications without further delay and implement SCÂ’s recommendations, apex court verdict on National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and Charter of Democracy (CoD).
He demanded that those government functionaries facing corruption charges in the wake of SC verdict on NRO should resign. He said money stashed in Swiss banks should be recovered as it belonged to the people of Pakistan.
“PML-N has been steadfastly struggling for the rule of law and Constitution, therefore, we cannot compromise over the corrupt practices of the Government,” he said.
Answering a question, Nawaz said that people of Pakistan would not allow Pakistan Army to intervene in the judicial crisis, arguing such interventions can only be prevented through the independent judiciary, which, he regretted, was not being digested by the rulers.
To another question, he said his party would not keep silence and would keep close watch on the rulersÂ’ consequential steps, adding the PML-N will play its effective role in the greater interest of supremacy of rule of law, Constitution as well as democracy.
“If we do not play our role for independence of judiciary, people of Pakistan will be fed up of democracy,” he warned. He added his party would also contact other political forces to evolve a joint course of action.
Agencies add: Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) will not allow the government to go scot-free, Mian Nawaz Sharif has warned while terming President Asif Ali Zardari the biggest threat to the democracy in Pakistan.
“Today, if there is really a danger to democracy, it is through these kinds of acts by Zardari,” Nawaz declared. “The Government is attacking the judiciary to protect its corruption.”
The PML-N condemned the SaturdayÂ’s incident, as the event plunged the country into uncertainty as the Presidency crossed its limits, Nawaz observed. He said SaturdayÂ’s incident was an action replay of November 3, 2007, adding the government is targeting the judiciary to protect its corruption. The Army should play the role stipulated in the Constitution, he added.
Nawaz said he forcefully warned the government to ensure the supremacy of the Constitution, adding his party categorically rejects the autocratic method adopted by the government. He told journalists that he had asked Prime Minister Gilani a day before not to delay the implementation on the recommendations regarding judgesÂ’ appointment.
However, the following day, something else surfaced, he added, demanding that the recommendations of Chief Justice Chaudhry should be immediately put into action.
Nawaz said the PML-N wants to make it abundantly clear to the Government in unequivocal terms that it would not be allowed to go its way on judgesÂ’ appointments nor would it be spared the chance for corruption.
“We can make harsh decisions in the coming days and will protest in and outside the Parliament and mobilise the masses. We will not allow anyone to spoil the institutions for personal motives,” he said.
Had the Charter of Democracy been implemented, there would not have been these problems, he asserted, demanding President Zardari to bring back to Pakistan his wealth siphoned off into Swiss accounts; this is the hard-earned money of the people of Pakistan. The country has been turned into a circus, he added.
The people of Pakistan will take care of all affairs, the Army should not be dragged in; nor should the Army get itself involved in such affairs, he said.
