The String Cheese Incident: Halloween Thoughts

By: Dennis Cook

Tickets for SCI’s October 29th are still available but Ticketmaster currently experiencing problems with date. Tickets for the October 30th show can be purchased here.

Moseley as SRV :: Halloween ’02
By Todd Radunsky

The String Cheese Incident hasn’t played a Halloween run since 2006 in Las Vegas. Hunger for a fresh All Hallows’ Eve Incident amongst their faithful, ever-colorful flock has been strong for years, and the band will soon feed that appetite on October 29-30 at the fabled Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA.

We snagged bassist-singer Keith Moseley to discuss the upcoming show, what the holiday means to SCI, the band’s new archival Rhythm of the Road series, and the group’s future plans.

JamBase: When did Halloween become such a big deal with you guys?

Keith: I think probably from the beginning we’ve always tried to make Halloween something special with the idea of being costumed and throwing in a bunch of fun cover tunes we don’t ordinarily do. We’ve often run with a theme and had special guests, but it’s always been about getting a little wacky and doing something special for the fans on Halloween.

JamBase: Is it fun for you to get into costume? It’s not something one does at most gigs.

Keith: We love it! It’s a chance to get silly and break from the norm. I’m thinking back to the year we did the Shrine in L.A. and did the dead rock star theme. I did Stevie Ray Vaughan and Kang did Hendrix and Travis was Freddie Mercury. When else do you get Travis up front with fake buck teeth and tights singing Freddie Mercury? It’s always a blast to do that kind of thing.

Travis as Freddie :: Halloween ’02
By Todd Radunsky

Has it become a challenge at this point to keep coming up with new angles for Halloween?

A little bit but there’s a huge library of fun tunes to cover and we’re pulling in some fun ones this time for sure. It’s always fun to prepare a special event and we don’t seem to have run out of creative ideas yet. We still have some fresh ones this year!

What is it like to preside over a giant size event like this, with enormous balloons and acrobats and so on? What is it like to be onstage making music while all this wildness goes off around you?

It’s super cool. We get to be the party hosts for the coolest gig in town, wherever we are, be it a Halloween show at Hampton or a New Year’s event. It’s pretty amazing to get to host that sort of event and know we’re blowing peoples’ minds over & over again with a fantastic show.

What’s the level of fan involvement in these sorts of shows? There’s no question that String Cheese has one of the most loyal, engaged fan bases out there.

We do, and Halloween, as far as fan involvement, has traditionally been that they come dressed. Put on your funnest costume and be ready to have a good time. A huge majority of the fans in attendance are in costume, so it becomes a larger than life event. At Hampton to have 10-12 thousand people in costume plus what the band throws out there, well, you can’t go wrong. It’s a guaranteed good time.

I’ve talked to a lot of musicians about this and the consensus is that there’s something different about playing to a costumed crowd. You can’t do your normal show when there are ghouls and devils and fairies riding the rail.

It just ups the fun factor. The crowd gets into a headspace where they want the band to be different and take chances. At least for us, they definitely expect something different and maybe silly or risky from the band. And we won’t disappoint. We’re not afraid to laugh at ourselves on Halloween. We’re all about high entertainment value.

Is it freeing as a musician to have a space like this, where you can think, “Well, I might fall on my face but I’ve always wanted to try this musical idea.”

Sure. For us, on Halloween anything goes. We’ve covered Nirvana to Queen to Phish to The Doors. It definitely ups the fun for everyone.

SCI Halloween Show :: Vegas ’05 :: by John Smirtic

How is it playing as String Cheese now that you’re only performing together a handful of times each year as compared to years & years of being road dogs?

It’s kind of fresh and exciting to have taken a break from the Cheese and then come back to prepare for Red Rocks and the Horning’s run. And we’ve been in rehearsal for a couple weeks now for the Halloween run. It feels great because nobody’s burnt out. At this point, we’ve reestablished a large part of our catalog from the tunes we played this summer and we’re reeling in even more of the tunes for this Halloween run, which will feature even more tunes we didn’t this past summer. So, it’s been great to feel we have a handle back on a lot of the catalog. And that coupled with the new tunes for Halloween, it just feels really fresh and exciting.

From what footage I’ve seen of the Cheese’s recent performances, I’ve picked up on a palpable sense of brotherhood onstage when you’re together now. There’s something going on in the way you look at each other, and you all seem very grateful that this experiment you started a long time ago is still going.

Absolutely. There’s nothing like taking some time off to give you some perspective on what you have. We’ve gotten out of the grind of being out on the road and playing a 100-plus shows a year and being away from our families. Now we’re at a really unique place where we’re able to just do select events with lots of prep time for the shows. I think we do look at each other onstage like, “Wow, I’m really excited to be part of this, to be part of such a great scene and great band.” Since December ’93 when we first started doing this, we do look back and think, “Wow, look how far we’ve come. Isn’t a treat to still be together and hosting events like this.”

It’s gotta be a kick in the ass to think you’re staring down 20 years of this thing.

It really is cool. In the beginning we only dreamed it would be something like this, that it’d be a career that would span this many years, this many shows and so many friendships along the way and incredible memories. It’s something you dream for and to realize it makes us feel super thankful and appreciative of what we’ve got.

The flipside of that is we absolutely know we have to come out and deliver now. There’s absolutely no room to play a bad show or have an off night. We know that by only doing select dates we have to come out and hit it out of the park every night. So, we’re trying our best to do that.

Kang Halloween Show :: Vegas ’05
By John Smirtic

This situation also provides the band a chance to reflect on what’s come before. I just listened to the first installment of the new Rhythm of the Road series. It’s gotta be fun to look back and decide what shows you want to represent you as a band.

Right, right. That one’s the Tabernacle from Atlanta in 2000, and that was has always been a fan favorite in terms of older shows. I had heard that and when I went back and listened to it as we mixed and mastered it, I realized there was a LOT of energy in that show. I can see why it is a fan favorite and I’m proud to put it out. That was 2000 and we were breaking into some bigger venues. My wife Kristen and I had just had our first kid, and that was her first show coming back after retiring from being the merch lady. So, I was really excited to see her again. We had our buddy Tony Furtado sitting in. We’ve been friends with Tony forever and he can really bring it! I think there’s a lot of obvious enthusiasm and energy to that show and I think people are gonna love having a chance to revisit it.

What do you see as the studio future for the band? I think the past couple studio albums by the Cheese are easily your best thus far.

I do, too. I think we’re all just maturing as musicians and songwriters, so the last couple albums have been really satisfying for us. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to get into the studio in 2011 and do a release. We do have new material. We featured a couple new songs this summer and we’ll continue to work new material into the repertoire. We’re all excited about bringing in new material and working it up.

You guys have a real nose for good material lately, the kind of tunes you’ll be able to play with and evolve over a long period of time.

That’s just part of the maturation process. When you’ve been doing it as long as we have you naturally begin to filter things out and you learn what you like and don’t like and maybe get more of an ear for a crafty pop hook or what’s likely to make a great jam. It’s exciting to bring new stuff in and see what the band do with it.

Wanee Festival :: 04.15.10-04.17.10 :: Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park :: Live Oak, FL

Herring & Bell – Widespread Panic at Wanee 2010

The instantaneous and non-sourced information available to us in our constantly chattering culture should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt.

Just one week ago, in the more hysterical corners of social-media networks, Wanee 2010 was deemed a disaster in the making. Anonymous histrionics and hypochondriacs matter-of-factly declared that the addition of Widespread Panic and the aggressive marketing of promoter Live Nation had bludgeoned this once sere scene into an oversold clusterfuck of brown-acid-at-Woodstock proportion.

In reality, Wanee 2010 was far removed from these dire predictions. Yes, this year was bigger, no doubt; younger and rowdier, too. Feeling the shoulder-to-shoulder squeeze at George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic Thursday night at the Mushroom Stage, or a simple glance at the sprawling crowd covering the entire Peach Stage field, was proof enough that the crowd was roughly double the size of last year.

Yet, blessed with beautiful spring weather, graced with an incredible lineup and handled with superb logistical skill that kept big-crowd headaches and hassles to a minimum, Wanee 2010 was a success on all fronts. Inseparable from the festival experience was a long weekend of camping in one of the most beautiful places on Earth and partying with the festival circuit’s most eclectic mix of like-minds, a crazed commune that is equal parts biker rally and magic carpet ride, camo and tie-dye, Bud tall boy and heady green tea.

So, if you don’t have fun at Wanee, you just ain’t doing it right.

Wanee 2010

In light of all the superlatives that could apply, this year’s festival will be summed up by a “Best of Wanee” approach, and we encourage you to post your own favorites!

Best Surprise Shredding: Godfather to the Southern jam scene, Col. Bruce Hampton fittingly held court Thursday afternoon on the Mushroom Stage as Wanee kicked into high gear. Yet, Quark Alliance guitarist Perry Osborn stole the show, ripping his way through the improvised madness typical of a Hampton show, shining especially brightly on “I’m So Glad.”

Best Reason to Put a Moratorium on Grateful Dead Covers: Though this is clearly an Allman Brothers festival, the Grateful Dead’s spirit and music permeated everything, and covers of the band were performed by seemingly every act. But, is this a good thing? Anyone that endured the cringe-inducing vocals of Papa Mali on “Wharf Rat” would argue it is not.

Best Way to Shake a Hangover: Jumping in the beautiful, brisk black water of the Suwanee River mid-morning will take one’s headache – and breath! – away.

Best Song Sandwich: Gov’t Mule‘s late night set closing sequence of “Mule” > “Whole Lotta Love” > “Mule” was a thrill, and Panic‘s flawless segues in “Chilly” > “Pleas” > “Chilly” were pure sickness, but when considering that the Allman Brothers opened their festival with “Mountain Jam” Friday AND finished the classic marathon instrumental on Saturday night, we have to give top honors to the Brothers.

Ivan Neville & JoJo Hermann at Wanee 2010

Best Black Crowe Sighting: Has Luther Dickinson morphed into Chris Robinson?

Best Tease: The aforementioned Mule medley also included a deft touch of “Loser,” but this Wanee award goes to ABB/Rolling Stones/Sea Level alum Chuck Leavell, a Southern gentleman and leading conservationist to boot. In a rollicking set featuring Randall Bramblett on horns, Leavell moved his band through “Dead Flowers,” “Rip This Joint” and “Here Comes the Sun” (dedicated to “Brother George”) before sailing into “Southbound,” where he worked the 88s for a few rolls of the Allmans’ instrumental “Jessica.”

Best Buckeye Shout-Out: Seemingly lost in a land of Gators, ‘Noles and Bulldawgs, a pasty fellow in an Ohio State cap, fists raised, shouted, “Akron, Ohio, baby!” during The Black Keys‘ set. While the connotation (and location) of Akron was unclear to most in attendance, and despite the fact that the town’s best-known musical act plays a hyper-modern blend of the blues that is a bit jolting contrasted to the Allmans’ innate grace, these Wanee newcomers delivered a well-received set, closing with a blistering “Till I Get My Way.”

Best Sit-In: Stiff competition in this category included WSP’s JoJo Hermann (keys) and NMA‘s Cody Dickinson (washboard) joining The Funky Meters for Professor Longhair’s “Red Beans” and Warren Haynes manhandling “North” during Panic’s Saturday set closer. But, sentimentality and craftsmanship win out in a nod to blues legend and longtime Allmans runnin’ partner Johnny Winter, who joined the ABB Saturday night for a haunting take on Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying.”

Gregg Allman – The Allman Brothers at Wanee 2010

Best Vocal Harmonies: Performing a set of hits by Sly and the Family Stone, one of their primary influences, Dumpstaphunk‘s Ivan Neville and Tony Hall became perfectly in sync as they nailed the vocal bass rhythm that is the defining groove on the classic Sly hit “Dance to the Music.”

Best Jam: Coming out of “Black Hearted Woman” on Friday night, the Allmans wove in the Dead’s “The Other One” jam. Building on the primal, driving rhythms of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, the scream, wail and twirl of Haynes and Derek Trucks‘ guitars created an epic crescendo to close this set.

Best Moment: Trading verses with Haynes, WSP frontman John Bell sweetly sang of a scene sketched by one of his heroes, Van Morrison, during “And It Stoned Me” on Saturday night during ABB’s set. With imagery evocative of rainstorms, pickup trucks and fishin’ poles, the verse was perfectly set against Wanee’s magical backdrop. Add in the lines, “There were bottles, too/ One for me and you/ And he said, ‘Hey, there you are!’” and there’s no denying the soul-stirring feeling of good friends sharing great times. And for fans of Panic and the Allmans, there’s an element of unrestrained bliss that only music can create in knowing that the union between these two cherished bands is now sealed forever.

Best Performance: The Allman Brothers on Saturday night. The music was superb, from Gregg‘s powerful pipes on “Ain’t My Cross To Bear” to the frenzied guitar jams of “Nobody Left To Run With Anymore” to the surreal spaces created in “Dreams.” Yet, this set encapsulated so much more. Taking the stage twice after Widespread Panic, a headlining act that most bands would never follow, the Allmans firmly planted their flag in the quasi-terra firma of the Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park, staking their claim to a growing festival they fathered, a scene they created and a legacy they have earned. Truly, the land and the kings are one.

In the tradition of a decade of legendary SCI Halloween Incidents, and at a venue that holds its own as an East Coast favorite, The String Cheese Incident’s 2010 Hulaween weekend at Hampton Coliseum promises to be an over-the-top event that only SCI could invent.

Year’s past have offered a “Joan Shivers’” Red Carpet welcome at Hollywood’s Shrine Auditorium, an ode to Michael Jackson’s Thriller in Las Vegas, and many more memorable events.

The String Cheese Incident’s recent live release, Trick or Treat (SCI Fidelity Records / October 2009), best tells the potent musical history of SCI’s “Hulaween” Incidents. Known to perform special concerts comprised heavily of cover tunes each Halloween, Trick or Treat offers selections from SCI performances recorded at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse (1998), Philadelphia’s Electric Factory (1999), Portland’s State Theatre (2000), New York City (2001), Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium (2002), Sin City’s Cox Pavilion (2003), and Madison Alliant Energy Center (2005). February’s announcement that The String Cheese Incident would perform select summer dates ended a three-year break from touring. Anticipation for these summer plays is high, as demonstrated when tickets to The String Cheese Incident’s Red Rocks and Horning’s Hideout shows sold out just minutes after they went on sale.

For this next era in the band’s career, SCI stays true to its roots by nurturing their community and creating live musical experiences rather than just concerts. In 2010, look for SCI to continue to think out-of-the-box about their musical journey – hosting special events instead of the typical tour-routing, exploring new ways of releasing recordings, and building on their reputation as innovators of fan participation.

    Furthur To Play Odeum CO Grand Opening on 03/05 & 03/06

    FURTHUR WILL PLAY GRAND OPENING OF THE ODEUM COLORADO MARCH 5 & 6, 2010

    Furthur

    The Colorado metro area’s newest entertainment gem, The Odeum, was formally unveiled December 3. On grand opening weekend, March 5 & 6, 2010, Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead will officially open the venue.

    Tickets go on sale Saturday, December 10 and can be purchased here.

    About The Odeum Colorado:
    Odeum Colorado is a re-launch and remodel of the former Broomfield Event Center, right off Highway 36, just 15 minutes from both Denver and Boulder. Colorado is blessed with some wonderful venues; however, the metro area has needed a great mid-sized venue set up primarily for live music with the ability to host non-music events as well. The Odeum Colorado, scale-able from 3500 to 6500 attendees, configures for a myriad of different events. The Odeum Colorado is perfect for intimate performances by superstars and just as perfect for up and coming bands to take their next step as their careers grow. To create the venue Colorado deserves, we brought together the best and brightest minds to remodel the facility into a warm, inviting and fun venue.

    The patron experience starts with the environment and our mission for the Odeum is to create the best environment for a mid-sized hall in America. The venue expects to host between 50 and 100 events per year and continue to grow every year. Attractions will include other non-musical events like one-off sporting events, family entertainment shows, non-profit and charitable events as well as some events hosted by the city and people of Broomfield.

    About Furthur:
    Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir are embarking on a musical adventure with their new band Furthur. The 24 date tour begins February 5 in Miami, Florida and will find Lesh and Weir revisiting some of the same historic venues where the Grateful Dead performed back in those thrilling days of yesteryear: Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA, Barton Hall at Cornell University, Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY, Auditorium Theater in Chicago, and Radio City Music Hall in New Your City.

    Fans can expect Lesh and Weir to push the musical envelope with jaw-dropping improvisations and loving renditions of Grateful Dead classics, with an all star band that includes keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, percussionist Jay Lane (RatDog), drummer Joe Russo (Benevento/Russo Duo, Trey Anastasio), and guitarist John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra). New and old fans of the Grateful Dead will be entranced as Phil and Bob take the musical journey “furthur,” exploring some of the Grateful Dead’s most beloved songs in a tour that promises to keep the feet stomping and the bodies shaking.

    Complete Furthur tour dates available here.

    FAA Flight-Plan System Crashes Again, Delays Hundreds of U.S. Flights

    A software configuration problem in one of the routers within the FAA’s telecommunications infrastructure system in Salt Lake City shut down its flight-plan and traffic-flow system Nov. 19 for about 4 hours all over the United States, the FAA says. The routing problem also shut down the system’s second node in Hampton, Ga.

    Guthrie Family Rides Again

    ARLO AND KIN SET OUT ON MASSIVE TOUR INTO 2010

    Arlo Guthrie

    “The Guthries are the first family of American folk. They practice what Woody preached.” -Vanity Fair

    “[Woody] Guthrie music is alive and well, and that the legacy is in good hands.” -Robert Price, New Jersey Herald

    This month, folk music icon Arlo Guthrie will begin his trek across North America with three generations of Guthries for “Guthrie Family Rides Again.”

    The concerts on the upcoming “Guthrie Family Rides Again” tour will feature Arlo’s standards as well as a selection of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics recently put to music by such distinguished artists as Billy Bragg, Wilco, Eliza Gilkyson, Janis Ian, Wenzel, The Klezmatics, and others. With many notable musicians from around the world contributing to keep the work of Woody Guthrie alive and well, the Guthrie Family will pay tribute to these artists as they perform some of the newly composed tunes.

    “Guthrie Family Rides Again” spotlights three generations of Guthries including Arlo’s son Abe, who has contributed keyboards and backing vocals to his father’s live shows since the ’80s. His daughters Cathy, Annie and Sarah Lee Guthrie, all of who have their own bustling music careers, will support by singing songs and accompanying on acoustic guitars. Sarah Lee’s musical partner and husband Johnny Irion (a JamBase faveÂ…learn more here) will lead songs and lend his stalwart guitar playing. The youngest generation of Guthrie kids will join in the fun on select songs.

    In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock, Arlo’s family-run label Rising Son Records released Arlo Guthrie: Tales of ’69 (Release Date: August 18, 2009). Recorded just prior to Woodstock, the recently discovered lost tape highlights Arlo live in concert in Long Island, NY and features nine tracks including an epic 28-minute talking blues tale as well as three previously unrecorded songs.

    Also coming up on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, Smithsonian Folkways will release Go Waggaloo, a 13-track disc of children’s music from Sarah Lee Guthrie & Family, featuring her husband Johnny Irion, their two daughters, and a host of other family and friends including her father Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Pete’s grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger. Guthrie presents thoughtful yet playful recordings of traditional songs and new compositions, including three songs featuring lyrics by her grandfather Woody Guthrie from the Smithsonian Folkways archives never before put to music and eight songs written by Sarah Lee and family. This is Sarah Lee Guthrie’s first children’s recording and her first recording for Smithsonian Folkways, home of 42 albums featuring Woody Guthrie and more than 200 children’s recordings by Pete Seeger, Ella Jenkins, Lead Belly and many others.

    Subjective Reality

    wave-2

    Then and Now

    When I was a teenager I thought thirty-somethings were dinosaurs. Fossils. Relics. Now I think they’re teenagers. In the eighties I wanted to be a hundred kilos of muscle and five percent body-fat. Now I’m more interested in finding the ultimate cheesecake. When I was a kid I worried about my non-Catholic friends going to hell. The last time I went to mass was twenty eight years ago. I guess I’m over that. Once upon a time I wanted to please everyone. Not any more. At one stage, I thought I had pretty much figured out the whole God thing. I now realise how arrogant that was and how little I know. There was a time when I pursued society’s version of success. These days I’m more interested in my version. For a long time I chased happiness. Now I gratefully accept it. At one stage my life was full of problems. Now it’s full of lessons. For a while there I hated silence and solitude. Now I crave it. In my early twenties I thought that situations and other people created stress in my life. Now I know that I am the creator of stress. And calm. I once obsessed about what clothes I wore. Now I spend most of my life in ten dollar flannel shirts and army shorts. At one point in time, standing in front of an audience terrified me. Now it excites me. There was a phase when my body was my identity. Now it’s just where I hang out. Not long ago I had no idea what a blog was. Now it’s the vehicle by which you and I connect. The meaningless has become meaningful. But only because I made it so.

    Opening the Door to Subjective Reality

    It’s true to say that the world I inhabited in the eighties and nineties is not the one I inhabit today. And when I say world I am not talking about some physical place or point in time. Neither am I talking about our culture. Or economic climate. Or our collective mindset. Or societal standards. Or fashion. Or technology. No, I’m talking about the ever-changing landscape that exists inside my head. The world I create and the world I inhabit day to day. As I sit here alone in my home office, it is silent. There are no people and no distractions. Just me and my thoughts. But where I’m sitting right now is not my world, it’s my location; Craig’s office in Hampton, Australia. As you may or may not know, your house number and street name have nothing to do with where you live. The message I’m now sharing with you is coming from my world. My world being the place from where my creativity arises. My world being the filter through which I observe humanity, process information, consider my observations and interpret the behaviour of others. It’s my escape when the external noise is overwhelming. It’s the place where I can explore, listen, consider, choose, feel and create. It’s a world nobody can visit unless I invite them. It’s where ideas are born and dreams are turned into plans. It’s the one place where my singing sounds good, my jokes are hilarious and my body doesn’t ache.  And while my world is the place where thinking happens, it’s also where I can escape thought and discover who I am beyond the cerebral noise. It’s the place where I can overcome fear and the place where I can transcend the sum of my life experiences in the physical world. In my world I have the capacity to overcome conventional wisdom and to explore who and what I might become beyond the self-imposed limitations, beyond the group thinking and beyond the weight of expectation.

    My world is unique. As is yours. My world is self-created. As is yours. Knowingly or not. Intentionally or not.

    The Stories we Tell

    While I am influenced and impacted by the three-dimensional world in which physical me resides, I am not determined by it. I will create and inhabit my own reality because I have that choice and that power. As we all do. Every day people tell themselves stories which help them deal with, process, react to and understand certain aspects of their life. In other words, they manipulate their internal reality in an effort to help them manage their external reality more effectively. Kids alter their subjective reality when they create an imaginary friend. To the adult looking on, the imaginary friend is nothing more than a childhood fantasy but to the child, the friend is a legitimate and very real part of their (self-created) world. So much so that the arrival of such a friend often brings an observable positive change in the emotional state of the child. Without ever being taught the skill, kids somehow find a way to make themselves happier. Now that is clever. That is powerful.

    The Last Bit

    Coming to the realisation that you have the ability to create your own personal reality - despite your situation, despite your circumstance, despite your history and despite your environment – is one of the most important, liberating and empowering discoveries you will ever make. When you choose to create your own reality, the sky is the limit. And no, this is not some weird-ass, abstract philosophical concept but rather, an invaluable skill – if you choose to make it that. On the other hand, if you decide that this message is nothing more than self-help mumbo-jumbo-fluff, that’s exactly what it will be. For you. Can you imagine living in a place where there are no problems, only lessons? Or a place where every day is a good day because you make that decision? Or what about a place where the only approval you need is your own? I know that for some of you this concept of finding your way to happiness and calm by learning to manage your internal environment might seem like an improbable, overly simplistic and somewhat impractical solution to (what appears to be) a very complex problem or situation. For a long time I was of the same opinion.

    Now I know better.

    Phish 08.14.09 Hartford, CT

    Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Comcast Theatre :: Hartford, CT

    Trey – Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Hartford, CT

    Textbook blue skies and a drawn-out sunset accompanied our walk towards the Comcast Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut. It is in fleeting moments like these, within both the waning humid days of summer and the near end of Phish‘s summer tour, which the mind tends to wander in and out of a reflective state. After a great run of performances that did not disappoint in the eyes of most, one can’t help but hope that Phish has a little something extra in the tank to raise even their own musical plateau steadily onward.

    Over the past few shows, there has been an almost formulaic nature to the setlists; often large selections of succinct songs have dominated first sets. On this evening, however, we were greeted with a full ranged onslaught that surpassed expectation. After climbing the wide staircase towards the lawn, a collective sea of roars attempted to will an early commencement. Firecrackers soared from what looked to be an off limits area behind the upper green wall, and it was this and other random playful acts of mischief that allowed the time to go by until the band arrived on stage just before 8:45 p.m.

    The opening licks of “Punch You In The Eye” set the tone for what would be a playful night. Moving intently through the structured portions, Trey Anastasio‘s guitar play gave and took subtly in coordination to his own dancing feet. The view from the lawn was interesting enough, but the sound space was heavily littered with distracting shouts and emphatic fan declarations. The song progressed into a patient funk, pulled further towards Jon Fishman‘s concluding hot-n-tot drum rolling. Where some recent takes of “PYITE” have ended abruptly, this version eased away from us like a wave pealing off a distant shore.

    Mike – Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Hartford, CT

    Making my way off the hill and under the pavilion, it was almost as if a whole other show was taking place during a short “NICU.” The beginning of “Colonel Forbin’s Ascent” took many by a pleasant surprise. White beams of accented light displayed Chris Kuroda‘s handiwork in almost unison to Trey’s lyric: “When the dust had cleared, the colonel lifted up his head, and was driven to his knees by a blazing beam of light.” As we all climbed towards acquiring the Friendly Book, the lyrically epic journey clashed in darker red and white washes. Meandering chord play by Anastasio paralleled an overall jam that was looking for cohesiveness. Eventually, this night’s battle for the Colonel’s ascent persevered towards the subsequent “Fly Famous Mockingbird,” and it was Fishman’s arrhythmic play that led the way towards one of the more cinematically unique rock opera jams I have heard Phish play this year.

    Anastasio’s sustained guitar wails during the opening moments of “Birds of a Feather” pulled us into a more hard-edged groove. After a series of smaller peaks, the track could have taken a turn towards incoherent space, but this evening’s foray, while not really pushing any envelope, persisted with a mature and fun style. And throughout, it was Fishman’s energizing drum whacks that gave the song much integrity. All in stride, the familiar concluding theme for “Birds of a Feather” appeared. The flow didn’t cease until the very end, where Fishman’s staggered beat interrupted where the final chorus usually interjects, adding a couple extra measures in just for fun to finalize the musical treat.”

    The casual nature of “Lawn Boy” allowed many of us a moment to cool off. Perched at the edge of the stage, Page McConnell seemed to beckon a sweeping breeze that flushed out the front concert space. Prompting the usual Mike Gordon bass solo, McConnell conversed with the fans in the back: “How about you in the lawn? Let’s hear it for Mike!”

    Page – Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Hartford, CT

    The previous interpretation of “Forbin” > “Mockingbird” added intrigue to what could occur during the ensuing “Stash.” What unfolded traveled around many different themes. One second we were enthralled in some sort of middle eastern spy mystery, the next excursion would captivate through darker spaced thrashings. At times it didn’t seem to be really occurring in front of us at all; through the meandering sound/image play various sonic voices were heard communicating in twirls. Eventually, similar motives collapsed and surfaced to a more distinct group discussion. The layered sludge subtly became confusion once again, only to reform towards what was left of the communal “Stash.” This one was a wild ride, and it was comforting to know they were seemingly “going for it” this entire evening.

    “Ladies and gentleman, about to perform his first vacuum solo of the tour,” Trey comically announced during “I Didn’t Know” before sitting himself behind the drum kit, “a recent Juilliard Master’s Vacuum Program graduate, the one and only Jon Moses Quagmire Dewitt Hampton!” After the ensuing vacuum solo during “I Didn’t Know,” the newer Gordon track “Middle of The Road” was an upbeat number that efficiently bridged the time appropriately between two monster tracks. Although the vocal harmonies need some fine-tuning, the song shows potential even in its early stages.

    The set one closer, “Character Zero,” has left many yearning for more in some of the recent attempts. A serious guitar-focused rock song at its core, “Character Zero” can almost be seen as a moment of truth whenever pulled out towards the end of a set. In the middle of a pocketed fury, Anastasio appeared to stretch his low-gauged guitar strings to the limit alongside Fishman’s fevered fills as tonight’s excursion was fun and aired out. By no means the pinnacle of the show thus far, this set ender did manage to leave us all with fists in the air looking forward to what they could possibly pull out for the rest of the evening.

    Fishman – Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Hartford, CT

    As set two opened with the familiar demonic bass warps of “Down With Disease,” the Hartford crowd erupted under the epic forward tumblings of light and sound. With a vast palette of inspiration before him, Kuroda kept up the pace in unison and we were once again flushed away by some ferociously progressive rocking and rolling. McConnell’s funky ivory work about ten minutes in broke the space continually wider in a form of transitory release. Eventually pure beauty emerged before us, and Anastasio’s solo sounded very similar to a “Reba” jam. If it weren’t for a somewhat harsh segue into “Wilson,” this night’s “Down With Disease” would have been seen as a flawless start to the killer second set.

    While short, “Wilson” was compactly sweet. Anastasio exhibited a wrath that was consistent throughout the whole evening. There was a small pocket where the track could have broke past the five-minute mark, but eventually the band had its sights on the next track’s larger premise. One of those numbers that is so deeply rooted within the DNA of Phish, the often-contemplative meanderings of “Slave” encouraged both feelings of past reflection and forward evolution. The playing field for all band members felt even. Given this moment of restitution from the crowd’s perspective, it bent the imagination to think of what the view felt like from the artist’s perspective as the ten-minute take both soared and resolved with the grace of a gravity-stricken feather.

    Page & Trey – Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Hartford, CT

    After a number of recent epic road trips throughout the vistas of Colorado listening to Farmhouse, the adventurous beginnings of “Piper” brought a smile to my face. Inspired by the previous excursions of “Col. Forbin” and “Stash,” this polyrhythmic cut had much potential. Two minutes in, Trey blitzed his will and concentration towards the heavens; leading the pack with a playfully piercing tone. Throughout this entire evening, it was as if they had been continually searching for this type of ascension. The flow was collected and concise nearing the halfway mark, still searching for that aspiring groove. A small scuffle between security and a phan brought my attention back down towards the people around me. Their invigorated movements confirmed that they too were seriously enjoying the now cryptic sequences. The mood turned completely on its side during “Water In The Sky.” Even the security guards, who had been hard at work all evening repelling the riff-raff, were seen handing out glow sticks to lucky fans with a subtle generosity.

    With the start of “Ghost,” one couldn’t help but feel content with tonight’s song selection. The effortless rock flow brought me back into introspective mode, and tonight’s excursion gave even more evidence that Phish 3.0 can offer inspirational muses. Some of the best moments with this band are the ones where they encourage you to go deeper within one’s own soul and psyche. During this short “Ghost,” the varied thought patterns scattering between each crowd member’s head could have been vast. If not for almost seizure inducing lights by Kuroda, many of us would have been too entranced to see grimaces upon the faces of the band members as the song transitioned into another of history’s gems.

    Phish :: 08.14.09 :: Hartford, CT

    The Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer” came out of nowhere, almost as if a last minute decision by one of the band members. (On an interesting side note, a couple of Talking Heads songs, including “Psycho Killer,” were played over the PA before the show.) The track itself began in its usually stuttered fashion, but by the end only the repeated plick and plunk sounds by McConnell and Fishman remained as the quartet regrouped with intention towards the obscure “Catapult.” The ensuing robotic “dance contest” between Anastasio and the crowd over McConnell’s continued plicks and plunks kept the evening flowing and comedic.

    “Does anyone else love this song as much as I do?” Anastasio asked. “I love this song. I’m waiting for the day until they play stuff like this on the radio,” he admitted while dancing over the sonic pulses. “Driving along, you know? Cranking it up?” Trey’s further ramblings about our most recent generation’s reliance of iPhones and DVD players over his elderly use of plain ole’ books made this ad-libbed version of “Icculus” very relevant, and shed our current time and place in a somewhat satirical light. With the stage soaked in a full range of reds after the structured portion, the set two closer of “You Enjoy Myself” sealed the deal. Although possibly cut short at the strike of midnight because of a late start, the tight improv section and ensuing beatbox-infused vocal jam left many of us fans in awe of what lay ahead for the evolution of Phish.

    Existing almost as a large magnifying glass hovering above, the opinions and critiques surrounding this vast scene by both the greater media and the waves of adoring fans are definitely a dime a dozen. But walking away from the Comcast Theatre with the encore of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” still lingering through my head, tonight’s shows did seem special. Although the curfew did seem to sneak up on us, we left the venue indeed resonating with that familiar and silently contagious buzz on a visibly very sleepy morning in Hartford. This feeling could not have been a fluke. And it will be further dissection and exploration of this emerging maturity of Phish that will keep many of us coming back for more.
