Building hardware: Going up
Fitting large buildings with lifts, locks and electrical systems is nice work
PEOPLE around the world who live or work in high-rise buildings are likely to travel on the first or last leg of their daily commute courtesy of one of four firms. Otis, part of United Technologies, is the world’s leading liftmaker, with 23% of the global market. The American company, Schindler of Switzerland, Kone of Finland and the lift division of ThyssenKrupp, a German conglomerate, together supply about two-thirds of the world’s elevators.
Liftmakers’ fortunes are on the ascent. China’s rapid urbanisation and economic expansion helped them weather the recent recession in the rich world. In 2008, a bad year, the world market was still worth €33 billion (then $47 billion). Demand for lifts and escalators is still booming. Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric, the fifth-largest liftmaker, reckons the market will grow by 30% by 2016 thanks to China—which could account for half of global demand—plus India and other emerging economies. …
Innovation in IT: The liquefaction of hardware
The rise of the virtual computer
IMAGINE a personal computer that has two souls. One moment it is your work machine, complete with a set of corporate applications and tight security settings. Then it becomes an entertainment centre, allowing you to watch any video and download any program.
Thanks to a process called “virtualisation”, such computers are now being created. Ever more processing power and clever software are allowing devices of all kinds to separate from their hardware vessels and move to new homes. If this process continues as some expect, it will change computing radically. And more than one IT company will have to rethink how it does business. …

HP’s Palm Pre 2 Features Speedier WebOS 2.0, Solid Hardware
Hewlett-Packard’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm is beginning to trickle down to the hardware and software level, with the upcoming release of the Palm Pre 2 on Verizon Wireless. While HP and Verizon have declined to offer exact pricing and a launch date, sample copies of the Palm Pre 2 are beginning to circulate at tech shows and other venues. The improvements to the Palm Pre indicate that HP is serious about combating Research In Motion’s BlackBerry, Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 7, the Apple iPhone and the ever-expanding family of Google Android devices. The Palm Pre 2 includes both a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch multitouch display. In terms of operating systems, HP WebOS 2.0 is supposedly faster than the original Palm WebOS, and boasts a high degree of integration with services such as Facebook and Microsoft Exchange. The Palm Pre 2 certainly feels more streamlined and "solid" than its predecessor, which received mostly positive reviews for its design but complaints from a subset of users over supposedly shoddy manufacture& i.e., the "Oreo effect," where the sliding mechanism would partially unhinge. Will the revived Palm Pre succeed in a crowded marketplace? That remains to be seen. But HP will reportedly port WebOS onto other form factors, such as tablet PCs. – …

Innovation@Intel: Energy-Efficient Hardware Accelerator
Today’s microprocessors need to compute more data than ever before, while maintaining a low power state for energy and battery life savings. Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is one of the most compute-intensive block ciphers for media content protection and data encryption on high-performance tera-scale microprocessor platforms. The exponential increase in data rates of real-time media processing and computational complexities of mapping modular Galois-field (GF) arithmetic and arbitrary permutations onto general-purpose microprocessors create substantial power and performance bottlenecks within the CPU core. Recently, at Research@Intel Day, in Mountain View, California, Intel Researchers demonstrated an energy-efficient reconfigurable special-purpose hardware accelerator targeted for on-die real-time encryption/decryption of media content in 45nm high-K/Metal-gate CMOS technology. The prototype chip showcases novel high-performance reconfigurable arithmetic logic and data-path circuits that are capable of performing the most commonly employed AES-128, AES-192 and AES-256 encryption and decryption standards at industry-leading throughputs up to 53Gbps while consuming only 125mW. Near-threshold voltage optimized circuits utilized on this chip enable the encryption/decryption performance to scale over a wide operating voltage range from 1.1V down to 320mV. An all-digital variation-tolerant true random number generator design targeted for secure encryption key generation is also demonstrated functioning at 2.4Gbps.
