Tea Leaf Green: Summer Shows Looking West Out June 8

NEW ALBUM OUT IN JUNE
APPEARANCES AT WAKARUSA, OYSTERFEST, ALL GOOD AND ROCKS OFF

Tea Leaf Green by Josh Miller

Tea Leaf Green has announced the release of their first studio album since 2008. Set to be released on June 8, Looking West will be available on iTunes, in the band’s online store, and at all of their upcoming shows.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to make this record,” says Trevor Garrod. “It’s almost as if we’ve loved these songs too much and were afraid to encase them forever in a studio album. These songs are messages in bottles washed up on foreign shores, alien transmissions from distant worlds, memories from our fading youth, and reminders of our endless and repetitious search for love and freedom.”

A special pre-order of the album is available now at the band’s online store. Everyone that pre-orders the album will automatically be registered to win a signed copy of the CD and one grand prize winner will receive a 4-pack of tickets to the headlining show of their choice and a private meet & greet with the band. They are also offering a special bundle sale option of a copy of the CD and one of the new TLG shirts for $25, or $22 for a digital download and t-shirt.

Tea Leaf Green will celebrate the release of Looking West on June 16th at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. To mark the occasion, the band will be performing the album in its entirety with a stripped down acoustic set. Every ticket purchase will also include a free copy of the CD. For more info or to purchase your tickets to this special show, visit tealeafgreen.com.

Hip Hop Legend Rakim: New Album

Hip Hop Legend RAKIM Drops New Single “Walk These Streets”

Long Awaited Album THE SEVENTH SEAL In Stores November 17, 2009

Rakim

On October 27, 2009, the man many call The God MC, Rakim Allah, or just Rakim, released “Walk These Streets,” (peep it below) the new single off of his much anticipated new album The Seventh Seal. Produced by Needlz for Dry Rain Entertainment, “Walk These Streets” features Maino and Tracey Horton. Additional guest artists featured on The Seventh Seal, which drops November 17, 2009, include Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Styles P, and others, including Destiny Griffin, Rakim’s own daughter. The artist’s Ra Records shares the imprint in a joint venture with Tuscan Villa and SMC Recordings and is distributed through Fontana/Universal Music Group. Rakim is currently on the road previewing the album and testing out new material at intimate venues across the United States.

Since its release, the album’s set-up single “Holy Are You” (stream below) has won praise from critics and fans alike. USA Today states, “The God MC previews his long-awaited The Seventh Seal with a lyrically adept reminder of how he earned the name,” with Billboard proclaiming “Rakim is in top form, richly merging self-mythologizing reflections on his legacy with religious imagery.”

His first full album of new material in almost a decade, The Seventh Seal is Rakim’s contemporary observation of the hip hop culture he helped define. While staying loyal to his New York roots, Rakim has created a body of work that encompasses the very best of regional, underground and mainstream styles that are reformed and delivered through his intricate lyricism and the seemingly effortless flow for which he is revered.

The artist states, “The Seventh Seal is my own revelation… my way of taking the best of what hip hop has to offer, what we as a culture and a community have to offer, putting my stamp on it and leading us forward while constantly respecting what we’ve already accomplished. When you’ve been blessed with a career like mine, you develop a deep relationship with the music, and that love is recognized by the true heads that share it with you. You’ll see us keep building as we break through each Seal… showing the best of what I can do in many forms, bringing the energy and having fun, but first I’m laying that foundation and give my longtime fans the conscious fire they expect.”

Guthrie Family Rides Again

ARLO AND KIN SET OUT ON MASSIVE TOUR INTO 2010

Arlo Guthrie

“The Guthries are the first family of American folk. They practice what Woody preached.” -Vanity Fair

“[Woody] Guthrie music is alive and well, and that the legacy is in good hands.” -Robert Price, New Jersey Herald

This month, folk music icon Arlo Guthrie will begin his trek across North America with three generations of Guthries for “Guthrie Family Rides Again.”

The concerts on the upcoming “Guthrie Family Rides Again” tour will feature Arlo’s standards as well as a selection of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics recently put to music by such distinguished artists as Billy Bragg, Wilco, Eliza Gilkyson, Janis Ian, Wenzel, The Klezmatics, and others. With many notable musicians from around the world contributing to keep the work of Woody Guthrie alive and well, the Guthrie Family will pay tribute to these artists as they perform some of the newly composed tunes.

“Guthrie Family Rides Again” spotlights three generations of Guthries including Arlo’s son Abe, who has contributed keyboards and backing vocals to his father’s live shows since the ’80s. His daughters Cathy, Annie and Sarah Lee Guthrie, all of who have their own bustling music careers, will support by singing songs and accompanying on acoustic guitars. Sarah Lee’s musical partner and husband Johnny Irion (a JamBase faveÂ…learn more here) will lead songs and lend his stalwart guitar playing. The youngest generation of Guthrie kids will join in the fun on select songs.

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock, Arlo’s family-run label Rising Son Records released Arlo Guthrie: Tales of ’69 (Release Date: August 18, 2009). Recorded just prior to Woodstock, the recently discovered lost tape highlights Arlo live in concert in Long Island, NY and features nine tracks including an epic 28-minute talking blues tale as well as three previously unrecorded songs.

Also coming up on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, Smithsonian Folkways will release Go Waggaloo, a 13-track disc of children’s music from Sarah Lee Guthrie & Family, featuring her husband Johnny Irion, their two daughters, and a host of other family and friends including her father Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Pete’s grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger. Guthrie presents thoughtful yet playful recordings of traditional songs and new compositions, including three songs featuring lyrics by her grandfather Woody Guthrie from the Smithsonian Folkways archives never before put to music and eight songs written by Sarah Lee and family. This is Sarah Lee Guthrie’s first children’s recording and her first recording for Smithsonian Folkways, home of 42 albums featuring Woody Guthrie and more than 200 children’s recordings by Pete Seeger, Ella Jenkins, Lead Belly and many others.

Trampled by Turtles: Tour

Trampled by Turtles Announce Extensive Fall Tour

Trampled by Turtles

Rising roots band Trampled by Turtles are headed out on a 40+ date fall tour. The coast to coast run is highlighted by headline shows at Minneapolis’ legendary rock club First Avenue, New York City’s hippest new theater 92Y Tribeca, and two nights at Denver’s Bluebird Theater.

Separating the band from the pack is the contrast of their lightening fast punk-influenced barn-burners and their lonesome Townes Van Zandt-inspired ballads. Artvoice Buffalo had this to say: “Their most recent release, Duluth, mirrors the raw intensity of their live performances, which are sure to leave audiences simultaneously raising hell and crying in their beers.”

Why not writing a story is innovation

Discussions about journalism innovation usually focus on technology: Twitter, RSS, Flash, Django, data visualization, and all the other cool stuff that’s making online news so rich.
But there’s an equally important conceptual aspect of journalism innovation. Newsrooms have to rethink the kind of stories they cover and the way they tell those stories, or all the [...]
