Smashing Pumpkins Headline Sunset Strip Music Festival

TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE TOUR ROLLS ON THIS SUMMER

Billy Corgan

Organizers of the Sunset Strip Music Festival have confirmed that The Smashing Pumpkins will headline the street festival on Saturday, August 28, with a live performance on the legendary strip, which is being closed to traffic for only the second time in its history. Smashing Pumpkins wrap up the third annual SSMF, set to include a special tribute event for Slash at the House of Blues on August 26; live performances at The Roxy Theatre, Whisky A Go-Go, Viper Room, Key Club, Cat Club and House of Blues on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights; plus more than 50 bands, two outdoor stages and a full day of music in the venues on Saturday, August 28.

As in year’s past, the SSMF will honor a figure who is synonymous with the sunset strip for their contribution to the history of The Strip as well as the music industry. This year’s honoree is Slash. Previous recipients of this honor have been Ozzy Osbourne (2009) and Sunset Strip club owners Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine (2008).

General admission, VIP and 3-Day VIP tickets for the event will go on sale Thursday, June 17 through Ticketmaster at 10 AM PST. Street fest tickets will be $49.50 in advance ($65 day of at box office) and VIP street fest tickets, which include access to a private tented area with full no-host bar and seating area, are available for $100 in advance. A limited number of three-day “VIP” passes (which include entrance to Slash’s tribute on August 26, the clubs all three nights + access to VIP tent at street fest) will be $250. There will also be individual ticket sales for the sunset strip clubs on Thursday and Friday nights. The SSMF is donating a portion of all tickets sold to the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN), a charity personally selected by honoree Slash. LAYN’s mission is to end homelessness, one kid at a time, by providing shelter, food and counseling for the abused, neglected and abandoned.

Alec Ounsworth Headline Tour

ALEC OUNSWORTH ANNOUNCES FIRST HEADLINING TOUR

Alec Ounsworth

Anti-Records is proud to announce Alec Ounsworth‘s first headlining tour ever. The dates will be in support of his critically acclaimed new albums: Mo Beauty and Flashy Python’s Skin and Bones. The tour begins with five shows opening for Cold War Kids and then Ounsworth and his band will do 18 headlining dates across the country.

About the band’s debut performance at 2009′s CMJ, Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote that they “set aside the brittle Talking Heads tinges of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for slightly more old-school approaches – meaty electric-piano funk with a New Orleans mambo flavor, bounding Rolling Stone guitar rock, and, from his band, guitar solos straddling blues jabs and post-punk dissonance.”

Ounsworth’s band is Matt Sutton, Peter Modavis, Brian Ashby and Jonas Oesterle. They will be playing songs from Mo Beauty, Skin and Bones, as well as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s catalog. Mo Beauty was recorded deep in the heart of musical New Orleans with an ensemble of local heavyweights including George Porter Jr. of The Meters and drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic, and was guided by veteran producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Replacements). The album is a stunning union of powerful rhythms and imaginative arrangements in the service of evocative literary songwriting.

The Low Anthem: Headline Tour

THE LOW ANTHEM SET FOR FIRST HEADLINING NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

The Low Anthem

Rhode Island trio The Low Anthem will embrace an exciting new decade by headlining their first North American tour in March and April and making their U.S. television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman this Thursday, January 14. They will also spend much of February supporting The Avett Brothers on the road.

2009 was a benchmark year for The Low Anthem: they toured for the larger part of it behind their Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, which was named Magnet‘s #1 Album of 2009, UNCUT‘s Americana Album of the Year, and Boston Music Awards‘ Album of the Year. The record figured prominently on year-end lists in Paste, MOJO, Q Magazine and right here on JamBase. It was also a New York Times Critic’s Pick, and NPR‘s Bob Boilen coined the song “Charlie Darwin” one of the best of the year. The nearly ceaseless tour included stints with Ray LaMontagne, Elvis Perkins and Josh Ritter, as well as festival stops at Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Newport Folk, among others.

On a short break from the road, the band has been busy working on the follow up to Charlie Darwin, holing up in an abandoned pasta sauce factory in Central Falls, RI. The band is no stranger to recording in unique spaces, having ferried 27+ instruments over to Block Island, RI in January 2008 for the recording of Darwin.

On January 31, The Low Anthem will also premiere their new weekly radio show on WOXY called the “Trala-Lala Radio Hour w/ The Low Anthem.” The show will be at 10 a.m. ET on Sundays and 8 p.m. ET Mondays. They will keep up their radio streak with a performance on KCRW‘s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” when they come through L.A. on tour.

In keeping with their forward momentum, Ben Knox Miller also recently collaborated on Anais Mitchell‘s upcoming album, Hadestown, alongside Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Greg Brown, Ani DiFranco and the Haden Triplets.
