HARD NYE in Hollywood

MAD BEATS IN AN INTIMATE SETTING

Congorock

Promoters of cutting edge electronic, rap and all things danceable, HARD, will present their final event of 2010 with HARD NYE. The year-end blowout will commence at the newly renovated The Music Box in Hollywood on December 31st.

French filmmaker/electronic superstar Mr. Oizo will headline the festive occasion. Supporting acts include Afrobeat/Disco House programming aficionado Brodinski, the talented French remix artist DJ Falcon, Fools Gold Records’ own fidget-house master Congorock, minimalist ghetto house blaster Harvard Bass, and HARD’s own Destructo. Featured in the funk room will be the 70s grooves of classic LA old school DJs Mike Messex and Sean Perry.

Unlike most HARD events this year, organizers have chosen an indoor venue for their New Year’s Eve bash. The smaller and more intimate venue will allow all guests to feel up close and personal to their favorite DJs all under one roof. Tickets are limited and HARD is encouraging everyone to purchase their passes early.

Broken Bells: First Tour Ever

BROKEN BELLS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER TOUR

James Mercer and Danger Mouse Hit The Road Beginning May 18 in San Diego

Debut Album Moves Nearly 50K First Week, Peaks at #1 on iTunes Album Chart

Broken Bells

In the wake of their new band’s self titled Columbia Records debut charting at #7 and selling just shy of 50,000 in its first week (and reaching as high as #1 on iTunes), James Mercer and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse have confirmed Broken Bells‘ first ever tour. The dates commence May 18 in San Diego and will include stops in 16 North American cities.

In addition to being the year’s highest charting debut album by an alternative/rock band, Broken Bells has met with an insanely and unanimously positive critical reception: Rolling Stone has hailed the album as “the year’s coolest left field pop disc” in a 4-star lead review, while Wired described it as “crazy good stuff” and Entertainment Weekly praised it as a “subtly savory sonic morsel.”

The mere handful of shows the band has played to date have fared likewise, selling out as quickly as tickets could be processed, and dazzling crowds in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Austin.

Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse.

Each a long-time fan of the other’s work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Broken Bells was pared down from more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded to the 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.

Mercer and Burton will continue to work as a band in the future.

Broken Social Scene: New Album

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM MAY 4

Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene will be releasing their new, as-yet-untitled album May 4 on Arts & Crafts.

Co-produced by the band and Tortoise‘s John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, with additional recording at Giant Studio and The Schvitz Studio in Toronto, the new album is the follow up to their acclaimed self-titled record, released in 2005.

The new record was written and arranged by the Canadian collective’s current lineup, which includes Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg and Lisa Lobsinger.

The album also features guest turns by a host of Social Scene alumni: Leslie Feist, Amy Millan and Evan Cranley of Stars, Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw of Metric, Jason Collett, Ohad Benchetrit of Do Make Say Think and Years, John Crossingham, Marty Kinack, Leon Kingstone and Julie Penner.

With their new album, the first following the acclaimed Broken Social Scene Presents… series, the band decided it was time to try something new. As a core six-piece who had spent most of 2007 and 2008 on the road, Drew, Canning, Spearin, Whiteman, Goldberg and Peroff spent early 2009 working on new material in Toronto. The pairing down of the band’s massive personnel list for the first time proved extremely fruitful; they created spacious songs written as a band by a band, resulting in more cohesive, melody-driven compositions than previous BSS outputs.

They then decamped to Chicago, recording outside of Toronto for the first time, which allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the recording process. In producer McEntire – a musical hero for many of the band’s members – they found a fresh perspective on their own sound, which continued to fuel the creative process, resulting in nearly 40 songs written in and out of the studio.

Broken Social Scene will also be playing select dates around their new album’s release.

Dr. Dog New Album/Tour

DR. DOG GEAR UP FOR ANTI- RECORDS DEBUT, SHAME, SHAME

SET FOR AN APRIL 6 RELEASE / BAND CONFIRMS 10-WEEK NATIONAL HEADLINING TOUR

Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog is very excited to announce the April 6 release of their Anti- Records debut, Shame, Shame. As a band that has traditionally built their spirited albums layer by layer in the undisturbed seclusion of their Philadelphia home studio, Dr. Dog realized that they would need to face the challenge of working in a professional studio and enlist the help of an outside producer (Rob Schnapf) if they were to continue their album-by-album evolutionary growth. The end result is the band’s most openly autobiographical release to date and peels back the layers of strings and horns of past albums to emphasize the raw immediacy of a tight unit honing their craft. Beginning January 27 in Troy NY, Dr. Dog will embark on a 10-week national headlining tour to premiere songs from Shame, Shame.

The stylistic reference points of Dr. Dog remain on Shame, Shame but with a darker tone. It’s an album whose themes of doubt, confusion and unanswered questions are soothed by bright harmonies, taut guitar riffs and soaring melodies. From beginning to end, Shame, Shame is a record destined to claim its place on the timeless margins, untouched by modern tastes and content to exist on its own terms. It’s the auspicious sound of Dr. Dog writing their exciting next chapter, one they’ve been working towards since they played their first notes together.

13 Movies Completed Post-Mortem

There are plenty of things that make movies great – from the acting, sound effects, and the stunning visual effects. But what happens if an actor dies before the movie is complete? As they often say, the show must go on. Here are 13 movies successfully completed after a star cast member had died.

Dr. Dog Sign to Anit- Set Big Fall Tour

Dr. Dog Sign to Anit- / Set Big Fall Tour

Dr. Dog has signed to Anti- Records. Here’s a note from the band.

From www.drdogmusic.com:

Hey Everybody,

Dr. Dog

Before we head into the studio for the next few weeks we wanted to let you know that we’ve gone and signed to a new label. The record we’re making now is going to come out on Anti- Records early next year. As you might notice, this will be the first time that we’ll release a record in the U.S. that’s not on Park The Van and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank the PTV guys for all of their love and support over the years.

Park the Van was basically started to help us release
Easy Beat which was our first “proper” album. The work that that Park the Van has done to let people know about Dr. Dog has been incredible. Over the past few years PTV and Dr. Dog have come a long way together and we’ve had a lot of fun in the process. We wish the guys at PTV and all of the great bands on the label the best of luck, and we’re thankful for what has been and will surely continue to be an amazing relationship.

Thanks guys!
