WD Ships New 600GB High-Performance HHDs

With a faster spindle speed of 10,000 rpm, WD’s new VelociRaptor hard drives aim to replace slower, smaller drives in all kinds of machines, including gaming platforms, high-performance blade servers, high-end PC workstations and Macintoshes, and standard rack servers.
– Western Digital, which wants to be known as WD, on April 5 started shipping
the fastest, most capacious 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive it has ever made.

At 600GB, the VelociRaptor VR200M doubles the capacity of the original version,
which was released in 2008. A 450GB model is also available.


Brocade Offers High-Performance, Efficient Ethernet Switch

Brocade is looking to give service providers a switch that will offer the performance they want in a compact and energy-efficient form factor. The NetIron CER 2000 Series switch offers 1 Gigabit Ethernet and 10G Ethernet capabilities in a 1U form factor with almost three times the performance of a comparable Cisco switch while taking up 33 percent less space and consuming 66 percent less power, Brocade officials say.

Micron Introduces 2 New High-Performance Flash Chips

Micron is manufacturing a multilevel cell enterprise NAND chip for added storage capacity and a single-level cell device for added performance. The company is sampling both new enterprise NAND devices with systems makers and controller manufacturers and is expected to be in full production by 2010.

IBM, LSI Unveil High-Performance, Energy-Efficient Embedded Processor

IBM officials say the PowerPC 476FP processing core will be the highest performing and most efficient embedded processor core in the industry. IBM is aiming the new processor core at SoC product families in such industries as communications, storage and defense. LSI also using the 476FP in developing a configurable L2 caches that is tightly coupled to the core.
