15 Great Movies That Were Never Finished

Athlete Announce U.S. Dates Black Swan Out Now

ATHLETE ANNOUNCES FIRST MAJOR NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN OVER TWO YEARS

NEW ALBUM BLACK SWAN OUT NOW

Athlete

Athlete will head out on the
road this spring/summer in support of their latest album, Black Swan, which was released on
March 2 through Original Signal Recordings in the U.S. The tour will kick off May 31 at Maxwell’s in Hoboken,
NJ.

Black Swan is a musical summary of everything Athlete has been through, the good, the bad and the ugly.
But although its songs burn with literate emotion, this certainly isn’t a downbeat record. In fact, the album begins with the hurtling FM rush of the glorious track, “Superhuman Touch,” which catapults the album to life with the
opening line, “I’m on fire and nothing’s gonna hold me back.”

Produced by the esteemed Tom Rothrock (Foo Fighters, Elliott
Smith
, Elbow, Beck), Black Swan positively
glows with snagging melodies, rich musicality and the band’s heartfelt tales. These songs together make Black
Swan
the strongest album Athlete has ever recorded. The reaction to Black Swan has been nothing
short of overwhelming both here and in the U.K. with Alternative Press stating, “If proper venues for a band
called Athlete are Stadiums, then this southeast London quartet have finally made an album worthy of their name… super-earnest reflections with melodies and arrangements direct and sturdy enough to bear the emotional weight.”
NME proclaiming, “Awash with gorgeous melodies, the best thing they’ve ever done.” And Q
Magazine
raving: “Strong results… from the rueful to the thunderous. A band reborn.”

Athlete first rose to prominence seven years ago with the spirited, electro-tinged, indie-pop of their Mercury-
nominated debut, Vehicles And Animals, Athlete have established themselves among the U.K.’s finest
songsmiths. The southeast Londoners have sold more than a million copies of their three hit albums (the other two
being 2005′s Tourist and 2007′s Beyond The Neighbourhood); packed out venues across the world;
picked up an Ivor Novello award; and topped both the UK’s album and airplay charts.

Athlete’s North American tour dates are listed below. Carney will support Athlete on all dates except Los Angeles June 21, Chapel Hill June
30, and Pittsburgh July 1.

The Feelies: Crazy Rhythms

By: Ron Hart

Straight outta Haledon, NJ, The Feelies were the complete antithesis of cool back when they officially formed during the year punk broke (1976, kids). Named after a deep reference from Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and dressed like the kids who ran the math club in high school, this quartet of North Jersey suburbanites were the outsiders amongst the outsiders of the NYC underground during the late ’70s. They hated gigging in the city because driving through the tunnels gave them headaches, drank coffee the way Jimmy Page downed Jack Daniels before shows, and were known to shave onstage with electric razors plugged into their amplifiers.

But once co-frontmen Glenn Mercer and Bill Million switched on their guitars as the terse, tight rhythm section of bassist Keith Clayton and one-time Pere Ubu/Electric Eels drummer Anton Fier kicked in their boxcutter-sharp, jittery grooves, The Feelies were an unstoppable force. Their sound was pure minimalism, taking the repetitive patterns of such modern classical composers as Terry Riley and Steve Reich and compounding it with a Bo Diddley groove stripped down to the studs a la the Velvet Underground, creating a sonic style as unique as their image. Originally released in 1980 on the UK-based Stiff Records, the group’s debut, Crazy Rhythms, is only LP to feature to Mercer/Million/Clayton/Fier lineup and remains one of the all-time great albums from the New Wave era. Now, after years of being out of print after the album’s U.S. label, A&M Records, got sucked up by the Universal Records machine, Crazy Rhythms is available once again for a whole new generation to enjoy its quirky genius thanks to Individuals frontman Glenn Morrow’s Bar-None imprint out of Hoboken, NJ, home of The Feelies’ favorite haunt, Maxwell’s.

Remastered and repackaged in a very cool slimline digipak (this is key, as the album’s cover art featuring headshots of the original members of The Feelies against a sky blue backdrop is one of the main selling points – just ask Weezer, who paid homage via the cover of their 1994 debut), the CD and LP of Crazy Rhythms only features the original 9 tracks – which includes such favorites as “The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness”, “Fa ce-La,” and their scorching cover of The Beatles’ White Album rocker “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey” – at the request of the band in order to maintain the integrity of the album’s initial issue. However, the CD does include a download card that features five bonus tracks, including the original Rough Trade 7-inch single version of “Fa ce-La,” demo versions of “The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness” and “Moscow Nights,” and live renditions of the title track and a cover of the Modern Lovers’ “I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms” from a March 2009 show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.

Also released in tandem with Crazy Rhythms is its equally-indispensible 1986 follow-up, The Good Earth, produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M. and one of the true cornerstones of that jangly, college rock sound we all love so much.

New York air crash search resumes

An image reportedly showing the collision over the Hudson River on 8 August 2009

Rescuers have resumed their search for debris and bodies from a helicopter and a small plane that collided and crashed into the Hudson River, near New York.

Nine people are presumed to have died in Saturday’s accident. Three bodies have been recovered.

The collision occurred between Hoboken, in New Jersey, and Manhattan, just across the river, on Saturday.

A pilot and five Italian tourists were on the helicopter. Three people, including a child, were on the plane.

On Sunday, New York Police Department boats circled buoys marking the location of the wreckage of the helicopter, by Hoboken.

The plane has not yet been found, officials said.

Map

They said poor visibility and river currents were hampering the search.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Saturday the emergency operation had changed from a rescue to a recovery mission and that the incident was "not going to have a happy ending".

He said it appeared the plane had flown into the rear of the helicopter, but stressed that a full investigation had to be carried out.

‘Huge crash’

Debbie Hersman, head of the National Transportation Safety Board, said that a helicopter pilot on the ground had seen the plane approaching the helicopter.

"He radioed the accident helicopter and told him: ‘One-lima-hotel. You have a fixed-wing behind you.’ There was no response from the pilot," she said.

The pilot on the ground then saw the plane’s right wing strike the helicopter and both aircraft "descended into the Hudson River", she added.

Television footage showed rescue craft heading to the site – about level with Manhattan’s West 14th Street – from both sides of the Hudson River after the incident happened.

"We saw the helicopter propellers fly all over"

Katie Tanski
Witness

In pictures: Hudson River crash

"We heard first a huge crash, a boom almost," said Melissa Green, who was having lunch on the New York bank of the river at the time.

"We turned around and saw these two mushroom splashes," she told the Associated Press news agency.

Other witnesses described seeing debris – including the plane’s wing – falling into the water.

"We saw the helicopter propellers fly all over," said Hoboken resident Katie Tanski.

‘Clear’ weather

The helicopter was operated by Liberty Helicopters, a sightseeing company that flies tourists around sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The light plane took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and was heading to Ocean City in the same state, an aviation official said.

The weather at the time of the collision, noon local time (1600 GMT) on Saturday, was said to be clear and mild.

In January, a passenger plane with 155 people aboard ditched into the Hudson River without loss of life, after apparently hitting a flock of geese.

Condo Fucks:Fuckbook

By: Ron Hart

Longtime fans of Yo La Tengo are well aware of the trio’s encyclopedia-like knowledge of music, displayed through their penchant for peppering their concerts with outrageous, leftfield covers of everything from Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War” to Jackson Browne’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High sex anthem “Somebody’s Baby.” So, the appearance of this mysterious side project, where they claim to be an obscure Matador catalog act from New London, Connecticut called Condo Fucks (perhaps a snide reaction to the corporate gentrification of their beloved Hoboken and the Lower East Side?) should not come as a surprise. Entitled Fuckbook (a spin on Yo La’s own indelible 1990 covers album, Fakebook), Georgia Condo, Kid Condo and James McNew blast through 11 glorious fast, fuzzy and frantic renditions of a wide array of AOR and post-punk nuggets from the likes of The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Electric Eels, The Flamin’ Groovies, Richard Hell, The Beach Boys, The Troggs and Slade. Fans of the kinder, gentler Yo La Tengo may be taken aback by the ferocity with which the trio attacks these songs. However, those who have braved their yearly Hanukkah residency at Maxwell’s will certainly understand.

Henry J. Stern: N.J. Corruption Soup: 5 Rabbis, 3 Mayors, 36 Honorables

“Everything was on sale – from politicians to kidneys.”

Timothy Karr: Taking the Wheels Off the Machine

Do the New Jersey Arrests Mark the End of an Era of Patronage Politics? Only 22 days in and the career of one of New…

US mayors and rabbis held in corruption inquiry

Two New Jersey mayors and dozens of political and religious figures were arrested today and charged in a massive bribery and money laundering scheme that included traffic in human body parts.

As part of an 10-year investigation into pervasive public corruption in New Jersey, hundreds of FBI agents fanned out across the state this morning to make arrests and search offices. Later, law enforcement vehicles crowded in front of agency offices as agents waited to unload their quarry.

Among those arrested following were Hoboken mayor Peter Cammarano III, Secaucus mayor Dennis Elwell, Jersey City deputy mayor Leona Beldini, state legislator Daniel Van Pelt, officials in the state capital, and several Syrian-Jewish rabbis who officials said laundered illicit cash through charities they controlled.

“The list of names and titles of those arrested today sounds like a roster for a community leaders meeting,” said Weysan Dun, a top New Jersey FBI agent.

The 44 people arrested today were snared by a single FBI witness who laundered $3m through networks with branches in the US, Israel and Switzerland, and paid more than $650,000 in bribes to the accused politicians, FBI officials said.

One northern New Jersey man, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, was charged with conspiring to traffic human organs. Officials said he promised to sell to the witness’s relative for $160,000 a kidney he had acquired for $10,000.

The witness at the centre of the investigation was himself charged in 2006 with bank fraud, and was familiar enough with the argot of bribery and international organised crime to win the suspects’ trust, court filings in the case show. In several of the cases, he posed as a developer interested in paying public figures under the table to expedite real estate projects.

The deals caught on video and audio recordings took place in boiler rooms, bathrooms and diners, with the suspects coaching the witness on code language to use in facilitating the transactions.

Offered cash to speed along a proposed real estate project, Cammarano promised: “You’re gonna be treated like a friend,” according to court documents filed in the case.

“Just make sure you expedite my stuff,” the witness told Cammarano. “That’s all I ask.”

After suggesting he hire Van Pelt as a “consultant” on a project, the witness told the politician he was a member of neither the Democratic nor Republican parties, but was a member of the green party, where “green is cash”, according to a court filing.

Many of the arrested come from a gritty, urban area of New Jersey directly across the Hudson River from New York City that in recent years has attracted young professionals driven out of New York by high real estate prices. Hoboken is most famous as the home town of singer Frank Sinatra.

New Jersey has a long record of political corruption, and the FBI said the new haul adds to dozens previous convicted in recent years.

“The victims in these corruption cases are the citizens of this state,” said Ralph Marra, US attorney for the state of New Jersey, “and the honest businessmen who don’t pay off”.

A tangled web

A huge corruption investigation leads to a string of arrests in New Jersey

A MAYOR, a rabbi, and an organ trafficker sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. But the mayors of the New Jersey cities of Hoboken, Secaucus and Ridgefield, a council president, two state assemblymen, numerous other public officials and political operatives, and five rabbis are not laughing. They are among 44 people charged in criminal complaints filed on Thursday July 23rd. The arrests were part of a ten-year federal investigation of both public corruption and an international money-laundering conspiracy. And, indeed, some organ selling.

The operation was huge. Three hundred federal agents of the FBI and Internal Revenue Service were spanned across New Jersey and New York to make arrests and raid homes and offices. The alleged money-laundering conspiracy seems especially shocking as it involved several high-ranking religious leaders, including the chief rabbi of the area’s Syrian Jews. With the help of an informant, who was charged with bank fraud in 2006, the federal agents infiltrated existing money laundering networks that operated between Brooklyn, New Jersey and Israel according to Ralph Marra, New Jersey’s acting United States attorney. …

Two mayors, rabbis and politicians are among some 30 people arrested in a major corruption and money-laundering investigation, say US authorities.

Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, and Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt are among those said to have been arrested in New Jersey.

Federal prosecutors said several rabbis were also detained in the states of New York and New Jersey.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker said it had been "an unbelievable morning so far".

Cars were said to be backed up four deep with suspects outside the FBI’s office in Newark, New Jersey’s largest city.

A news conference is scheduled for later on Thursday. </p
