“KFOR troop cut dangerous for holy sites”

A Serbian Orthodox Church dignitary says the reduction in the number of KFOR soldiers in Kosovo is “worrying and represents a very dangerous process”. “The cut in the number of KFOR soldiers, given the permanent political and security instability in Kosovo-Metohija, is a very dangerous process,” Archimandrite Sava Janjić stated at the SPC Dečani Monastery, adding that the KFOR reduction can cause a security vacuum in the province.

“Relations between Serbia, Vatican excellent”

Vatican Ambassador in Belgrade Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Orlando Antonini, has stated that relations between the Holy See and Serbia are excellent.

He explained that this was mainly due to the fact that the Holy See, like many other factors in the international community, had not recognized the self-proclaimed independence of Kosovo.

Holy places: Unholy rows

Holy places should unite humanity. Too often, they have the opposite effect

ACROSS northern India, householders who were braced for a bout of violent sectarian strife are sighing with relief. The people most affected by one of the world’s biggest arguments over sacred turf, in the town of Ayodhya, seemed to accept the verdict, even if it was not quite what they wanted. On September 30th judges in the state of Uttar Pradesh ruled that the contested site should be split between Hindus and Muslims, with the latter getting a third.

“We must abide by the court’s decision and move on,” declared Mohammed Hashim Ansari, a 90-year-old Muslim who has been involved in litigation over the site since 1961. Such stoicism is impressive. As a boy, he had prayed in a fine sandstone mosque, the Babri Masjid, which had stood on the site since the 16th century. In 1992 Hindus tore it down. They believe their god-king Ram was born there. About 2,000 people died in the ensuing violence. In the run-up to the latest verdict, many feared more bloodshed. But India’s prime minister and other public figures hailed the compromise ruling and the calm reaction as a sign of maturing attitudes. …

Gut bacteria and obesity: Holy shit!

A new way of finding out how diet affects gut microbes

AS THE world’s fatties clock up the kilos, their excuses for being that way have piled up, too. Big bones, junk foods, genes or poor parenting—there are plenty of directions in which to point a chubby finger. In the past few years, a new potential culprit has emerged: gut bacteria. Human guts are full of bugs that help digestion and also stop their disease-causing counterparts from invading. In this age-old symbiosis, some bacteria are better than others at providing food to their human hosts—and also seem, by mechanisms yet unknown, to encourage those hosts’ bodies to store that energy as fat and to keep the fat on.

In the past, when food was in limited supply, these bacteria would have been valuable allies. In an era of plenty, though, they are problematic. In particular, work on mice suggests obesity is associated with having a high proportion of bacteria called Firmicutes, whereas the lean favour another group, the Bacteroidetes. Such work has also raised the suggestion that transplanting “lean mouse” microbes to fat mice can make them thinner—for a while. …

Hoots and Hellmouth: The Holy Open Secret

By: Sarah Hagerman

The family band plays the family key
Underneath the family tree
While gathering round in apple baskets
Well it’s hard to tell which ones are wombs
And which ones are caskets

A lethal combination of old timey charm and dark matter weaves through much of Hoots & Hellmouth‘s second full-length release, The Holy Open Secret (MAD Dragon). Although the band has a rafter raising energy that is imbibed with a divine fire – and a live show that will make you testify to the strength of plywood as they leap up and down on boards in lieu of drums – they definitely saunter in from the wrong side of the tracks, teetering on rails that lead towards Americana anarchy. The Philadelphia-based core trio of Sean Hoots (guitar, vocals), Andrew “Hellmouth” Gray (guitar, vocals), and Rob Berliner (mandolin, vocals), with producer Bill Moriarty (whose been behind the boards for other fantastic Philly outfits such as Dr. Dog and Man Man), utilize their kinetic muscle to the hilt on many tracks here.

From the rousing, untamed vocal interplay to the glorious mess of foot stomps, hand claps and beaten washboards to the emphatic strumming and picking, the assemblage of pieces snap together around their wildly bucking spine. Defiant punk rock shouts in “Root of the Industry” (“Hack your way to the root of the industry!”) are just as fitting as the gospel declarations in “Known for Possession”(“Brother, am I possessed?/ Well, I must say yes/ And so happy to be so”). “You and All of Us” is a rowdy, roadhouse howl, and “Watch Your Mouth” bops on an oom-pah-pah beat with a chorus surrounded by textured scats and chatter. But, there are breaks from the ruckus on dialed down songs like the plaintive “Dishpan Hands,” which paints a scene of domestic unrest that’s devastating in its simplicity, centering around a sink of dirty dishes:

I’ll get em done
And I’ll get em done right
Always looking to end a good fight
And I’ll show you the man I want to be
In the home I long to save

Peaceful ending track “Roll, Brandywine, Roll” meanwhile grounds us by the Brandywine River that flows through Southeastern Pennsylvania, closing the album out on Mother Nature’s watery whisper. Washed clean, you must say it was a smashing baptism, with mud smeared on the pews and the preacher stumbling through the aisle with stale whiskey breath. There’s something freaky about this revival, and you’ll definitely damn glad you drank the Kool-Aid.

9 killed in Gojra riots

GOJRA (PPI/Reuters/AFP) – At least nine people were killed in armed clash between two groups and police firing on the mob here on Saturday.
An angry mob marched towards a village of rival community in Tehsil Gojra District Toba Tek Singh where fierce clashes erupted between the two groups.
At least nine people including six women belonging to both sides lost their lives in armed clashes and police firing. Many others were injured.
On the orders of President Asif Zardari, the government sent Punjab Rangers to the riot-hit town to maintain law and order.
A heavy contingent of police was also dispatched to the troubled area to bring the situation under control.
The government sent Punjab Rangers to riot-hit Gojra to
According to Reuters and AFP, six Christians, including four women, were burnt alive and dozens were wounded in clashes in the town, officials said, adding 40 houses and a church were also burnt over the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in the town, officials said.
Tension has been running high between the two communities in Gojra over allegations that Christians had desecrated the Holy Quran.
Clashes erupted early on Saturday, with an exchange of fire from the members of the two communities.
Television footage showed burning houses and streets strewn with blackened furniture and people firing at each other from their rooftops.
Federal Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti alleged a mob “misled by extremists”, attacked a Christian neighbourhood and torched dozens of houses.
“We have received six bodies of people who died of burn injuries. They included four women, one man and one child,” Abdul Hamid, a Health Ministry official in the town told Reuters by telephone.
Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, who is also responsible for security matters of Punjab, condemned the attack and said an inquiry had been ordered.
However, he said, a preliminary investigation showed there was no desecration of the Holy Quran. “It was just a rumour which was exploited by anti-state elements to create chaos,” he said.
“I request both Muslim and Christian communities to show restraint,” Sanaullah said, adding the government would take strict action against rioters and also police who failed to stop the violence.
“Some people blamed the Christians for the desecration of the Holy Quran,” Minorities Minister Bhatti said, adding that the accusations were “baseless”.
He did not elaborate on the alleged desecration.
Police said that unrest between a group of Muslim and Christian villagers first flared late last month over a dispute over the Holy Book, which was later resolved.
Tensions erupted Saturday however, when the Christian group were attacked again and their houses set on fire.
“Today, according to our information… this is the same issue of alleged desecration of the Holy Quran,” Inkisar Khan, city police chief told reporters.
“All the dead are Christians. I was told that they were burned alive,” Bhatti said.
Television footage from the area showed police using teargas in an effort to disperse an angry mob.
Online adds: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has called Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif and directed him to take strict action against the persons involved in the Gojra incident.
Spokesman of Prime Minister Secretariat told that Prime Minister Gilani who is currently on Karachi visit telephoned Shahbaz Sharif as soon as he got information about the incident and ordered Chief Minister to take emergency measures to stop gun-battle in Gojra.
At this, Chief Minister assured Prime Minister that he had already issued directives to the concern administration and he was personally monitoring the incident.
Meanwhile, a meeting of renowned and prominent ulema of the country was held under Ittehad Tanzimat Madaris Pakistan in Lahore.
According to a handout issued on Saturday, the meeting was presided over by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which a resolution was passed unanimously condemning violence in Gojra.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of the Punjab government has said that the report submitted to President Zardari with regard to Gojra incident is not based on facts in which the Punjab government has been criticised unnecessarily.
According to a handout, Punjab government spokesman said that unjust allegations have been levelled in the contents of this report. The spokesman further said that in fact the Rangers were called on the request of Home Department of the Punjab government.
