Vintage FGH

From Good Homes opened up an old door at the newly managed Stanhope House, bringing together people who hadn’t seen each other in the band’s ten year hiatus. Since FGH has played in venues like the Wellmont Theatre in December of ’09, and Tuxedo, NY in May 2010, there have been large crowds for the reunion. In the 250-capacity Stanhope House you couldn’t go the whole night without making eye contact with everyone in the crowd. The positivity and excitement from the audience must have shined on to Todd Sheaffer, Brady Rymer, Patrick Fitzsimmons, Dan Myers and Jaime Coane because the music was up to par like they never broke up and took a ten year break.

The first set started off with a high-energy rendition of “Parachute.” The sing-along aspect to the FGH repertoire rose for the first of many times during “Go Wild,” leaving singer-songwriter-guitarist Sheaffer in control of leading the crowd to scream along to the lyrics. Other songs were executed in a way focused more on instrumentation such as the upbeat “Butterfly & The Tree” and “Into The Black,” which was a ground shattering piece with deep bass bombs from Rymer. The mood lightened up during songs like “Charlie Hogan,” and “Coming On Home,” but in between, the heavy-rock flavor lingered during “Way To Go Pam,” highlighted by beautiful sax lines, and Sheaffer’s colorful articulation of the unique lyrics.

The second set began with the laidback, jazz esque “Dance A Hole,” leading into a mixture of jams, ballads and sing-alongs. Fitzsimmons was on fire all night, banging out a jam inducing beat during “Suzanna Walker” and playing on the mellow side on “Place Where Song’s Begin.” A funky New Orleans-esque influence caused an improvisational frenzy during “It’s Getting Dirty,” while he laid down a hypnotic beat including all of his drums on “I Only Want.” The set continued with a bang, and during comical fan favorite “Ballad of Todd and Tracy,” they dug into “I Am A Mess,” a funky-groove that Sheaffer still plays with current project Railroad Earth. “Raindance” could only be described as overwhelming with the band showing they can overpower a crowd with emotion. The second set ended with Rymer leading “Second Red Barn On The Right,” where he stole the show through his enthusiastic vocals and pristine bass playing.

Vintage FGH

To satisfy the crowd one last time, they offered up the highly requested Sheaffer narrative “Grandmas Apple Dumplings” for the first encore, which shook the floor and snatched up the last of the crowd’s boisterous energy. However, the band wasn’t done as they went into Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic,” a pleasant cover made interesting by Dan Myer’s saxophone. Closing with a bang for From Good Home’s meant Sheaffer screaming – a sound not often heard at Railroad Earth or From Good Homes’ shows – to “Bow Wow Wow” as he encouraged the crowd to scream at the top of there lungs along with him.

If the smiles on the faces of the crowd didn’t do it for you, then the impressive musicianship surely had you on your toes. It was an honor to see a band playing in their original local area after reuniting in the past year at a place ten times larger than The Stanhope House. It’s stunning that this only the sixth time they’ve played together in public since reuniting (including a secret barn show this past May). Their music leads one to believe they’ve been on tour regularly, working out there repertoire after a decent hiatus. The two shows in December at the Wellmont Theatre will certainly prove once again that these musicians can incorporate stellar songwriting with top-notch jams in the their style of “hick pop.”

Private equity buys into care homes: Wall Street goes long on grannies

Nursing homes may not provide the profits that buy-out firms expect

THEY are best known for eyeing glittery targets such as swanky retailers and landmark buildings. But private-equity firms have also recently shown interest in a much less glamorous business: nursing homes. Since 2005 there have been at least 46 buy-outs of nursing-home operators worldwide, according to Dealogic, a research firm. Private-equity firms now own three of the five largest chains of homes in the United States, including the biggest, HCR ManorCare, which was bought by Carlyle for more than $6 billion in 2007.

The buy-out firms reckon there is money to be made from the ageing of populations in rich countries. In 2009 Americans spent $104 billion on nursing-home care, up 20% from 2005, according to Kalorama Information, a research firm. Since people are living longer but not necessarily healthier lives, demand for residential care will keep increasing. Nursing homes have stable cashflows, since much of their revenues come from government reimbursements and are thus relatively immune to economic downturns. …

From Good Homes

From Good Homes have announced that the band’s Reunion will continue with a weekend of shows at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ on December 17 & 18.

The Wellmont Theatre was the site of From Good Homes’s reunion in 2009 over 2 sold out shows after a 10-year hiatus, of which Relix Magazine said the band’s “playing still feels as fresh and invigorating as it ever was.” Since the initial 2009 Reunion, the band has headlined The Mighty High Festival in Tuxedo, NY and performed a headline show at The Music Box at The Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City over this past Labor Day weekend.

“We’ve had such a great time gettin’ back together and playing last year, so it just felt right to return to the Wellmont and crank it up again,” says bassist Brady Rymer. “We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response, and it has been amazing to reconnect with fans and friends we hadn’t seen in a long time. We’re planning to ramp up the energy and spirit a little further and get the Wellmont shakin’ even harder this year!”

Tickets for the shows are $28 in advance and $33 on the day of show. Purchase tickets here
. More information is available at www.wellmonttheatre.com and www.fromgoodhomes.com
. There will be a limited number of “Weekend Passes” offered until they sell out, which will allow fans to see both shows for $50.

From Good Homes is also doing a “secret show” at the Stanhope House in Stanhope, NJ on November 24th. They’re playing under the name Jefferson Township, which they did back in ’09 at the Mercury Lounge before their Wellmont Shows.

The genesis of From Good Homes dates back to a high school band, when childhood friends Todd Sheaffer, Brady Rymer, and Patrick Fitzsimmons came together in rural, Northwestern New Jersey. Originally called “Old Crow,” and later evolving into “The Dogs,” the core line-up remained. With the addition of Dan Myers in 1988, and Jamie Coan in 1990, the band From Good Homes was fully formed. Named after a judge’s explanation for leniency after the young band broke in to a club to finish their set, the band “from good homes” released five albums during their career – 3 of which were released by RCA Records. Their upbeat approach, solid songwriting, and unique sound allowed them to quickly develop a dedicated following on the touring circuit. The band performed over 1,500 shows across North America, including tours with Dave Matthews Band, Ratdog and shows with Bob Dylan, Guster, Widespread Panic, Hootie & The Blowfish, Blues Traveler and many more.

Bringing together rock, jazz, folk, celtic and jam-band influences under one umbrella, rooted in Todd Sheaffer’s inspired songwriting, From Good Homes forged their own, instantly lovable music. Their unique style prompted one critic to affectionately label the band’s blend of influences as “Hick-Pop.” After disbanding in 1999, band members went on to embark on individual projects. Todd Sheaffer formed the bluegrass-influenced Railroad Earth, which has released six records and continues to sell-out shows throughout North America. After starting a family of his own, Brady Rymer began a career making music for children and families; his most recent release Here Comes Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award in the Best Musical Album for Children category. Drummer Patrick Fitzsimmons has had a very successful run as a singer/songwriter, releasing five records independently and touring regularly in the Northeast. Saxophonist Dan Myers runs a production company, Dirt Floor Studio, and has worked on records with Adam Green, Sam Champion, as well as with Rymer and Fitzsimmons. He also appeared as a guest soloist on Live Trax Vol. 16, the latest live release from Dave Matthews Band. Multi-instrumentalist Jamie Coan continues to write, perform and record and currently plays with the bands Red Top Ramblers and Sweetgrass in the Charleston, SC area and also performs as half of the Folly Beach Rhythm Section, which backs up Samuel David Owens.

From Good Homes is:
Todd Sheaffer – lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Brady Rymer – bass, vocals
Patrick Fitzsimmons – drums, vocals
Dan Myers – saxophones, melodica, vocals
Jamie Coan – acoustic guitar, violin, mandolin, vocals

Google Instant Previews Homes In on Users’ Search Targets

As fast as Google, Microsoft Bing and Yahoo search engines are, they are still predicated on the traditional model that users type in queries and get a bunch of links. Hopefully one or more of those actually fulfill users’ requests for information. Google Instant Previews guesses users’ queries as they begin to type them, helping users search much faster than before. Google Instant Previews marks the search giant’s next evolution of rapid-fire search, offering users visual snapshots of search results. This gives users a better idea of what lies behind the query, helping them filter out the noise from results of value. Instant Previews comes as Google battles newcomers, such as Blekko, as well as question-and-answer sites, such as Quora, Hunch and Facebook Questions, in an increasingly crowded market for digital information search. Google Instant Previews is rolling out gradually in 40 languages, but while you’re waiting, eWEEK offers this tour of them here. – …
