Trusting charities: Faith, hope and charities

The public trusts charities more than any other type of organisation. But measuring do-gooding risks shattering some illusions

FEW institutions in the modern world enjoy more trust than charities—a trust given both by rich people who give them money and by the wider public that may benefit from their work. A recent survey by American Express shows that 70% of Americans trust non-profit outfits more than government or business to “address some of the most pressing issues of our time”. A survey by Merrill Lynch of rich people found that over 94% trusted non-profit organisations (business won a 68% rating and government a paltry 32%).

Trust in do-gooders extends well beyond America. This year’s “Trust Barometer”, an annual survey of attitudes in six countries by Edelman, a PR firm, found that non-governmental organisations, or NGOs (as non-profits tend to be described outside America), were more trusted than governments or businesses. That was true even in China, where trust in NGOs had been low only five years earlier. …

Greeting cards: Message of hope

Card companies believe technology will bring a smile to special occasions

MOTHER’S DAY, which this year falls on May 9th in many countries, is a time to give thanks and count blessings—not least for greeting-card companies. Americans alone will spend $671m on cards for this Sunday, according to the National Retail Federation. John Beeder of American Greetings, a card company, claims that his industry is “somewhat recession-proof”. The thinking is that people spend more on cards when they don’t have much cash to splash on gifts.

Maybe. Card companies have fared better than some other makers of consumer products in the downturn, but they have not been unscathed. American Greetings’ revenue fell by 3% in the year to February, to $1.6 billion. Hallmark, America’s largest greeting-card company, saw sales tumble by 8% last year, to $4 billion. Crane & Co, a privately held firm that sells classy stationery, suffered a double-digit decline in sales in the recession. Its second-bestselling item in 2009 (after notecards) was, unusually, high-quality paper for resumes. …

  • Palm Stock Hits a Low, but Hope Remains

Palm shares have fallen to their lowest since March 2009, with some analysts cutting their price targets. Others, however, are still optimistic that Palms assets, and the Verizon Wireless network, can, in the long term, again make Palm a major smartphone contender.
    – Palm seemed to have done everything right with its comeback kid, the
Palm Pre. But despite this, with sales slowing, financial analysts have
been downgrading the wireless handset makers stock.

Since peaking in September, at $17.75, Palms stock has fallen to
