Fujitsu Deploys Japan’s Fastest Clustered HPC System

Fujitsu says the new supercomputer system achieved a LINPACK benchmark performance of 97.94 teraflops. Compared with other cluster systems included in the June world Top500 list, the system’s performance ranks first in Japan and 34th in the world, Fujitsu says.
– Fujitsu on
Aug. 7 revealed that it has completed deployment of a new clustered
supercomputer for Japan’s
Institute of Physical
and Chemical Research, or RIKEN, that the company claimed was benchmarked as
the fastest HPC system in Japan.

Fujitsu said the new supercomputer system achieved a LI…

Dell Workstation Features AMD ATI GPU

At the Siggraph 2009 show in New Orleans, Dell introduced its M6400 mobile workstation, which is powered by the ATI FirePro M7740 graphics accelerator from AMD. The announcements a day after HP unveiled configurations of its Z800 workstation that run on Nvidias Tesla GPUs, highlighting an increasing interest among workstation and HPC customers in systems running on graphics processing units.
– Workstation vendors continue to bring GPU technologies to their systems.
A day after Hewlett-Packard officials said they were offering their HP Z800 workstation with the option of running up to two Tesla GPUs (graphics processing units) from Nvidia, Dell announced Aug. 4 that its Precision M6400 mo…

HP Workstation Comes With Nvidia Tesla GPUs

HP is offering configurations of its Z800 workstation with Nvidias Tesla graphics processors. The move comes at a time when Nvidia is aggressively pushing GPUs into the HPC field, and other chip makers in particular, AMD and Intel are looking to expand their graphics chips capabilities. In addition, hardware makers like Appro are offering CPU and GPU technologies in their systems aimed at the HPC space.
– Nvidia continues to find new homes for its Tesla GPUs.
The graphics chip maker Aug. 3 announced that Hewlett-Packard is now offering its Z800 Workstation with up to two Tesla GPUs aimed at the HPC (high-performance computing) space.
Nvidia officials see the embrace by HP as the latest indication o…

SGI Continues Push into HPC, but Without Itanium

Two months after Rackable Systems closed the deal to buy the old SGI, officials with the new SGI are touting a product road map that shows a future not only for Rackable servers, but also for the legacy SGI hardware. SGI officials also are saying both Rackable hardware and legacy SGI hardware are attractive to the HPC space. However, the next-generation high-end Altix system, code-named Ultraviolet, will be powered not by Itanium processors but by Intel’s upcoming processors code-named Nehalem EX.
– When Rackable Systems closed its $42.5 million acquisition of Silicon
Graphics Inc. in May, officials touted the new company as one that could play a
significant role not only in the data center, but also in the supercomputing
space.
Two months later, officials with the new SGI now
Silicon Grap…
