Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert Will Be Dropped from Hulu
Comedy Central programs The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report will be dropped from Hulu starting on March 9, after a rights dispute between the network and the popular video streaming site. Hulu and YouTube have taken advantage of the growing trend in watching streaming video online, which in turn has led companies such as Microsoft to integrate Hulu feeds into their video pages and enterprise IT companies such as Omniture to create solutions for monitoring the spread of viral video clips across the Internet. Streaming video is also becoming a more robust source of revenue for both networks and sites such as Hulu.
– Comedy Central programs “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert
Report” will no longer be available on Hulu, due to a dispute between the
network and the streaming video site. The shows will be removed from the site
starting at 11:59 p.m. PST on March

Magazines take on Amazon: A Hulu for print
Magazines attempt to win back control of their digital editions
LET it never again be said that old-media firms are slow to deal with new technology. On December 8th Conde Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corporation and Time Inc invested in an as-yet-unnamed venture that will create and sell digital magazines and newspapers for the new generation of e-readers that is likely to succeed Amazon’s monochrome Kindle in the next year or so. It was as if a group of explorers had announced plans to settle a country that had not yet been discovered.
Consumers can already get hold of many publications on smart-phones and e-readers. But smart-phones have small screens, and e-readers render magazines as crudely illustrated black-and-white books. They cannot reproduce magazines’ distinctive fonts or elegant graphics. Worse, they are unsuited to advertising, on which most magazines depend. In the year to June, Meredith’s publishing arm, which produces Better Homes and Gardens among dozens of other titles, made almost twice as much from advertising as it did from newsstand sales and subscriptions. …

Microsoft To Kill Soapbox, Its YouTube Competitor
Microsoft has announced plans to shut down Soapbox, its online-video competitor to YouTube, by the end of August. Despite Soapboxs presence, Microsoft had only 2 percent of the online video market, placing it fifth behind Yahoo, Hulu, Fox Interactive Media and Google. As it readjusts its corporate strategy amidst a severe global downturn, Microsoft has killed a number of legacy programs, including Popfly, Encarta and Money Plus.
– Microsoft will shut down Soapbox, its online-video competitor to YouTube, by the end of
August. The decision follows weeks of publicly acknowledged debate over whether
to continue operating the portal, which delivered Microsoft a paltry share of
the online-video market.

Hulu to Match YouTube’s Revenue: Ten Observations For The Future of Media
An analyst at Screen Digest estimates that in “2008 YouTube will generate about $100m in the US, compared to about $70m at Hulu. Next year both sites will generate about $180m in the US.†That’s very significant because YouTube had 83m unique viewers in the US in September, while Hulu only had 6m.
