Strong earthquake hits Hungary

Hungary was hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday, the strongest in the country since 1985.

There have been no reports of injuries so far and some buildings suffered minor damage.

EU threatens Hungary over media law

European Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes has given two weeks to Hungary to show that its new media law is in accordance with the EU rules.

“Otherwise, it will face legal action,” said European Commission (EC) Spokesman Jonathan Todd.

Inquiry focuses on Hungary’s new media law

Hungary’s newly-instituted media council (NMHH) launched an inquiry into Tilos radio station in September, according to a letter from the council.
The inquiry relates to the station’s broadcast of two songs by American rapper Ice-T in its 1730h program. According to the letter from the NMHH, the songs’ lyrics were objectionable, and violated sections 5/B. § (3) and 5/C § (2) of the Regulations on Radio and Television Broadcasting.

“Hungary prepared to change media law”

With anger mounting over its controversial media law, new EU president Hungary appeared to bow to its critics, saying it will change the law if necessary.
Speaking to a select group of foreign journalists in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said his government is willing to cooperate if the European Union deems the law unacceptable in its current form.

Serbian caught smuggling Afghanis

A Serbian citizen described as people trafficker has been arrested, along with four Afghanis, one of them a 13-year-old boy.
Reports said that the arrests took place in Hungary, near the border with Serbia.

Serbians hurt in Hungary crash

Nine Serbian citizens have been injured in a traffic accident near Budapest, Hungary, said reports this Wednesday.
The Serbian embassy in that country said that one person was seriously injured.

Hungary to take over EU presidency

Hungary will take over from Belgium on January 1, 2011, as the country presiding over the EU rotating 6-month presidency. When it comes to the Western Balkans, Belgian FM Steven Vanackere says his country is satisfied with the results, and noted it support the start of producing the EC opinion on Serbia’s readiness to submit its application in order to obtain candidate status.

Protest closes two border crossing
