Vanilla Ice: “I Dumped Madonna For Being Too Sexy!”

What would the Chinese want from Renault?

I’ve had an interesting email from someone with a theory about the Renault espionage story. The Chinese, the author tells me, are determined to become EV leaders and not find themselves in the position of playing industry catch-up, or having to work with foreign firms for technology transfer, as they have been doing with fossil-fuelled ICE automotive technology over the past few decades.

What is being sought for China, the theory goes, is something like the Project Better Place proposed system of battery swap stations (Chinese government not keen on fast charging). Better Place has an exclusive agreement with Renault and Renault is developing cars with the battery swap capability – and that’s what the Chinese are interested in. And they want to ‘leapfrog’ the ICE, taking full advantage of their huge domestic market to gain an international competitive advantage in electric vehicles and dominate the industry at a global level.

Interesting theory.

Let me add a few things to the mix. One, China imports a lot of oil and that’s surely something that rapid growth of the ICE car parc isn’t helping (as well as air quality). Two, has the ICE learning process facilitated by joint ventures with foreign carmakers largely run its course? The big players are arguably more able to stand on their own two feet now and there is also a clutch of smaller independent Chinese OEMs. A shake-out over the next few years will leave the industry still leaner and with a low-cost structure by international standards. The Chinese firms have their own brands, know how to make cars and have an understanding of the manufacturing processes so it’s about execution now. Do they need the foreign partners? Debateable perhaps, but not as much as they did in the early days.

And three, now that there is a big group of car users relatively new to car ownership, the government can play with regulations and taxes to make electric vehicles more popular when this big group comes round for replacement purchases. Could they be weaned off of ICE cars to EVs? Would a network of battery swap stations and vehicles that could take advantage of that help? Could a ‘state enterprise’ possibly play a big role in the infrastructure side of things and would that be something that might be licensed internationally to countries that are friendly to China, too?

Predicting the Arctic’s summer fate is not so simple

MARCH is the maximum month. In March 1979, the first year for which satellite records are available, the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean covered 16.4m square kilometres (6.4m square miles). By the time summer was gone, the ice was down to about 7.2m square kilometres. Every March since, the ice has returned to an annual maximum, but never again has it been as large as the one observed that first year. Every summer, it shrinks back down, and the minimum has for the most part been getting smaller and smaller. In 2007 it was just 4.3m square kilometres. At first, polar scientists watched the planet’s icy pulse with academic interest and justifiable pride in their new observational capabilities. Now they monitor its every hiccup as if it were a patient on life support. But that does not mean they know how to interpret what they see.

This year they noted that the Arctic ice cap had a late-winter growth spurt, reaching its maximum on March 31st, the latest date ever recorded. By the beginning of June, the ice cover—as defined by the percentage of ocean covered by at least 15% floating ice—had dropped far below what is usual for the time of year. Both observations, by themselves, sound as if they should contain meaningful information about what to expect in the rest of 2010. They don’t. …

Kitchen Hack: 3 Easy Steps To Create Healthy Frozen Yogurt

Editors Note: I’ve had frozen yogurt lots of times at ice cream stands and from grocery stores. I never thought to try and make it in my own freezer though because I assumed it was more than just frozen yogurt. It turns out I was wrong! Thanks, Celes, for the tip! I took mine out mid-freeze and gave it a brisk stir for a slightly creamier consistency. Delicious!

Looking for a quick snack you can whip up at home? Want some delicious after-meal dessert without feeling guilty?

If you (1) like eating ice cream (2) are lazy to make it and (3) are calorie conscious, I have the perfect solution for you. Being a calorie conscious individual, I’m particular about eating high calorie foods. Imagine my exhilaration when I found this simple kitchen hack that not only lets me prepare ice cream with absolute ease, but allows me to eat without worrying about calories. Each serving is only 100 calories. Get ready to enter ice cream haven :D.

What You Need

Just 3 things: (1) Yogurt (2) Freezer (3) Spoon (for eating later). It can’t get any easier.

Step 1: Pick your yogurt

Do you like your ice cream plain? Or do you like fruits in it? Nowadays yogurt comes with fruit variants such as blueberry, apple, peach and strawberry. I always pick the fruit variants because it gives added crunch and flavor to the ice cream. My favorites are mango and peach, strawberries and mixed berries flavor.

Brands like Yoplait, Danone and Marigold will have more than enough options for you to choose from. They are about 100 calories per cup, which makes for a delicious low calorie ice cream :) You can even have 2 if you want, though I find 1 is sufficient whether as a appetite filler or after-meal snack.

Step 2: Put it in the freezer for 2 hours

Typically yogurt is placed in the refrigerator to keep it chilled. Since we are making yogurt ice cream, we’re putting this in the freezer. Depending on the size of your container and type of yogurt, this’ll take at least 2 hours.

In the meantime, go surf around lifehack.org and check out the past articles.

Step 3: Get your delicious ice cream

Check if the yogurt has hardened into ice cream by squeezing the container. If it can be squeezed, put it back in the freezer for a while longer. If it can’t, that means it has hardened into ice cream.

If so, remove the seal. Use a spoon to poke into the ice cream. If it’s too hard, leave the yogurt at room temperature for about 15 minutes for it to soften first.

Enjoy your delicious yogurt ice cream :D. Go ahead and have one snack every day of a different flavor. Since it’s a healthy food and only 100 calorie per serving, there’s no reason to limit it in your diet. This is a kitchen hack I use almost every day and I love it.
