Intel, Micron First to Sample 3-Bit-Per-Cell NAND Flash Memory on Industry-Leading 25-Nanometer Silicon Process Technology

Companies Announce Industry’s Highest Capacity, Smallest NAND Device Providing Cost Advantages for a Wide Range of Consumer Storage Applications

Intel and Micron announce first 3-bit-per-cell NAND flash memory chip on 25 nanometer process technology. Also known as Triple Level Cell, the 8 GB device offers improved cost efficiencies and higher storage capacities for USB, SD flash card and consumer electronics markets. SANTA CLARA, Calif. and BOISE, Idaho, Aug. 17, 2010 – Intel Corporation and Micron Technology Inc. today announced the delivery of 3-bit-per-cell (3bpc) NAND flash memory on 25-nanometer (nm) process technology, producing the industry’s highest capacity, smallest NAND device. The companies have sent initial product samples to select customers. Intel and Micron expect to be in full production by the end of the year.

The new 64-gigabit (Gb) 3bpc on 25nm memory device offers improved cost efficiencies and higher storage capacity for the competitive USB, SD (Secure Digital) flash card and consumer electronics markets. Flash memory is primarily used to store data, photos and other multimedia for use in capturing and transferring data between computing and digital devices such as digital cameras, portable media players, digital camcorders and all types of personal computers. These markets are under constant pressure to provide higher capacities at low prices.

Designed by the IM Flash Technologies (IMFT) NAND flash joint venture, the 64-Gb, or 8 gigabyte (GB), 25nm lithography stores three bits of information per cell, rather than the traditional one bit (single-level cell) or two bits (multi-level cell). The industry also refers to 3bpc as triple-level cell (TLC.)

The device is more than 20 percent smaller than the same capacity of Intel and Micron’s 25nm MLC, which is currently the smallest single 8GB device in production today. Small form-factor flash memory is especially important for consumer end-product flash cards given their intrinsic compact design. The die measures 131mm2 and comes in an industry-standard TSOP package.

“With January’s introduction of the industry’s smallest die size at 25nm, quickly followed by the move to 3-bit-per-cell on 25nm, we continue to gain momentum and offer customers a compelling set of leadership products,” said Tom Rampone, Intel vice president and general manager of Intel NAND Solutions Group. “Intel plans to use the design and manufacturing leadership of IMFT to deliver higher-density, cost-competitive products to our customers based on the new 8GB TLC 25nm NAND device.”

“As the role of NAND memory continues to escalate in consumer electronics products, we see the early transition to TLC on 25nm as a competitive edge in our growing portfolio of NAND memory products,” said Brian Shirley, vice president of Micron’s NAND Solutions Group. “We are already working to qualify the 8GB TLC NAND flash device within end-product designs, including higher-capacity products from Lexar Media and Micron.”

Pimps of Joytime: New Video

THIS SHOULD PUT YOUR BACKFIELD IN MOTION

While many toy with the funk, The Pimps of Joytime make it purr and buck like good men & women should. But like clear ancestors Prince and War, they mix it up with style, too. Their latest video infuses their strut with Latin soul so right it’d make Joe Bataan do a cartwheel. And Joe’s not a young man so you know it’s good!

The Pimps have a boffo new album, Janxta Funk!, arriving later this year that folks should put on their radar (JamBase got an early listen and can assure y’all it’s slammin’!). And the group is touring extensively this summer, playing two dates in Idaho this weekend and then heading to High Sierra Music Festival next week with stops along the way in Yosemite, San Luis Obispo and Santa Monica. Jerry Joseph | 03.25-03.27 | Big Sky Run

Words & Images by: Phil Santala

Jerry Joseph & The Jackmormons:: 03.26.10-03.27.10 :: Whiskey Jack’s :: Big Sky, MT

Jerry Joseph :: 03.26 :: Big Sky, MT

In a barnstorming blitz of ski towns Jerry
Joseph & The Jackmormons
returned to the greater Yellowstone area in promotion of their new live album, Badlandia. Fresh off the heels of a successful Stockholm Syndrome tour (see JamBase’s raves here), Jerry came out guns blazing, and firing on all cylinders.

Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon/Great American Taxi once called the Teton Valley the cultural center of the universe. The hub of that center would have be the Knotty Pine in Victor. “Fury” > “Frost Heaves” was a fitting combo for those of us who have lived in the valley and combated the deteriorating road conditions on Teton Pass this winter. But, it was the heavy handed “Hammer” followed later by “Soda Man” with an extended drum riff building the middle stanzas during the second set that really blew the hair back of those in attendance.

Just a few hours up the road, along a drive Jerry said he has enjoyed making much of his life, is where the band really hit their stride. Whiskey Jack’s at the base of Lone Peak is just a few miles (as the crow files) from Bandito’s, where Badlandia was recorded live last August. There must be something in the air or water in these parts that really gets the Jackmormons’ gears a-grinding. The Friday show was electrifying, and the Saturday show absolutely blew the roof off of the place.

The pace in Big Sky was set early with the third song Friday night, “Drive,” which often shows up in the tail end of a set, and typically a second set at that. I was able to witness a unique exchange during the “Altar in a Box” > “North” > “Altar in a Box.” As Jerry led the bloodthirsty crowd into “North,” chairs were practically bouncing off the walls. “Ask me if I give a…,” cried out Jerry, as “…FUCK!” wailed back from the majority of the audience. The two guys in front of me were absolutely floored by this exchange. “Wow,” one said to the other, “that’s not the kind of sing-along you get at Phish!”

Jerry Joseph :: 03.27 :: Big Sky, MT

The treat Friday evening was the “Brother Michael” > “Big Sky Country” > “Presence of the Lord/Rama Cita jam” > “Brother Michael” combo. “Big Sky Country” is a song by Chris Whitley, whom Jerry Joseph toured with in 2002. Whitley, who passed away in 2005, was a big influence on Jerry, and the nod was appreciated by the audience. The locals know that Montana is “Big Sky Country,” at least according to the state propaganda machine and our license plates. Hardcore Jerry Joseph fans from out of the area were also quick to point out that the song had not been played before to their knowledge, and if it had been covered, none in attendance had witnessed it. Another cover, Bob Marley’s “One Drop,” truly hit us from leftfield, rounding out Friday night nicely and propelling us ravenously into Saturday.

The capacity crowd at Saturday’s sold out show was in for some treats, too. During the “Revelator” > “Second Skin” opener, Jerry broke a string on his well worn, workhorse, “Support Your Local Hell’s Angels” guitar. He finished the first set on a new-looking blue substitute, though the sound remained pure Jerry. “Henry” featured magical teases from Whitley’s “Big Sky Country” and The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” in the middle of “Whatever You Got in the Basket.” But, it was the slow “Climb To Safety” that would really hold us over through set break.

Better still, the second set focused on music to get you though the night and not just a set break. The greater Yellowstone area – around Grand Teton National Park and all the surrounding mountains of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming – is the kind of place where life is like water. That’s just how the three day run closed, too: “Kind of Place” > “Light is Like Water” > “2 Balloons” > “Light is Like Water.” The combination got our feet moving before sending us out the door knowing that “Supper’s Ready” down the “Hallelujah Trail.”

Jackson Browne & David Lindley Album & International Tour

JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY COME TOGETHER FOR INTERNATIONAL TOUR

THE DUO RELEASE LOVE IS STRANGE, A 2-CD LIVE SET ON MAY 11

Jackson Browne

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. Comprising dates in the U.S. and Europe, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour follows the May 11 release of Love Is Strange (Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006.

The Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour begins with a month-long European leg kicking off in Bristol, UK on June 3. Other highlights include shows at the Stadpark in Hamburg, Germany (6/15), Casino de Paris in Paris, France (6/18), and Hampton Court Palace and Royal Albert Hall in London (6/8 and 6/29, respectively). More European dates will be announced shortly.

Stateside, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour gets underway July 20 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. U.S. summer dates run through the end of September; the first U.S. leg concludes at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta on August 15. Highlights along the way include the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (7/23), the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (7/24), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (8/5), and the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX (8/13).

Accompanying Jackson Browne and David Lindley on tour will be Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by members (since 2008) Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.

On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973′s For Everyman, and on classics including Late For The Sky and The Pretender (the latter two both on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983′s acclaimed El Rayo-X.

Prior to 2010′s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain-in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming 2-CD album Love Is Strange, “En Vivo Con Tino” – featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Set for worldwide release May 11 on Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, Love Is Strange was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter.

In liner notes Browne wrote for Love Is Strange, he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness, nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne. “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ‘stalking the wild Lindley.’”

Umphrey’s McGee | 01.22 & 01.23 | Colorado

Words by: Adam Cremeans | Images by: Spady Photography & Jason Woodside

Umphrey’s McGee :: 01.22.10 :: Belly Up :: Aspen, CO

Jake Cinninger :: 01.22 :: Aspen by Spady

Umphrey’s McGee barreled into Colorado, steaming from a short run through the west with stops in Arizona, California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah. These shows were met with high-praise as the band showcased a degree of improvisation and exploration that many Umphreaks felt defined this tour. The band’s sound has always been rooted in creative inventiveness, though something about these most-recent shows seemed to lift their energy to a new level.

Expectations were high as night fell on the small town of Aspen. The Belly Up has long been considered one of the more intimate venues in Colorado and with a capacity of just 450, the room feels more like a small jazz club than a rock venue. In addition, the sound system is often regarded as one of the best in the country as the club’s smaller dimensions result in supurb acoustics. With a sold out crowd descending into the club, a murmur of excitement flowed through the air as we staked out our respective places and settled in for a night of fun.

The band took the stage and opened with “In the Kitchen,” jumping right in with the same free-forming style from previous nights, segued beautifully into “Padgett’s Profile.” A loud “Rocker (Pt. II)” quickly mellowed out as the opening chords of “Dear Lord” quickly drew smiles from some of the older fans in the audience. If you are unfamiliar with this song please seek it out immediately; it is one of the first UM compositions and it beautifully reflects a side of the band rarely seen.

Ryan Stasik :: 01.22 :: Aspen by Spady

The rest of the set belonged to Joel Cummins (keys) and Brendan Bayliss (guitar/vocals) as both led the band through an exceptional “Uncle Wally” > “Great American” jam. “Syncopated Strangers” was played sharp and fast, striking a metal tone that stayed present throughout the whole show. A short return back in to “Kitchen” closed out the first set. During the break, the crowd milled around as few seemed willing to give up their space in the oversold venue.

A pretty standard start to the second set included a cover of Van Halen’s “Runnin’ With The Devil” and an aptly placed “Thin Air” to acknowledge the elevation. Things then quickly got interesting in the middle of “Phil’s Farm” as the band introduced a new jam technique which has been coined “The Linear” for now. Yet to be fully explained, this is apparently something comparable to the concept of the “Jimmy Stewart”, though, according to the band, it will “change each time it’s played.” Whatever it is, or becomes, remains to be seen but on this night the process was explosive.

A very upbeat version of “The Haunt” kicked the crowd directly in the teeth before Bayliss briefly switched to a mini-synthesizer, dropping the opening notes to the instant dance party of “Cemetery Walk II.” This has quickly emerged as one of the more popular Mantis tracks and the effect it has on a high-energy crowd is just plain fun.

For the encore, the band served up a concise version of “Sociable Jimmy,” which then gave way to a rocking version of “Hollywood Nights” that had the crowd soaring as Jake Cinninger (guitar/vocals) belted out his best Bob Seger impression. The show ended and the crowd spilled out into the gorgeous Aspen night as talk quickly shifted to Denver and anticipation began to grow for Saturday’s doubleheader.

UM S2 Series :: 01.23 :: Denver by Spady

For the hardcores that managed to get from Aspen to Denver by the 4 p.m. showtime, Umphrey’s McGee unleashed their fifth installment of their increasingly popular Stew Art Series (S2). For those unfamiliar, the band plays an all-improv set based on the suggestions of the 50 fans in attendance who text their requests. The most original texts are displayed through a projection screen and the band takes their cues from that. The concept is amazingly intimate and highly original. A meet-and-greet with the band and crew follows the show, where food and drinks are served. Some would think the $100 per ticket price tag would turn many away, but for the extreme Umphrey’s fan the experience is priceless.

What follows in the setlist below are the texts that appeared on the screen for the band to “play.”

Improv I (15:46)
Techno Bluegrass, Rastafarian Snoop Dogg, Sound Engineer’s Worst Nightmare, How Ryan Felt About the Steelers Losing, Sweaty Bunk Love, Mile High, Shirt Too Tight, Even For Joel, Wafuled, Myers Farag Duel, Save the Princess Part II, All Guns Blazin’

Improv II (15:12)
Wappy Dingleberry, Conan vs. Leno, Cemetery Walk Part III, Marc Brownstein vs. Jen Hartswick, Coming In the Back Door, Umphrey’s 1st Tour Bus, Iron Maiden Does Devo Song For Your Moms, Reaction to Aron Magner Sitting In the Front Row Holidaze Moos, Kris 7 Years With The Band

Improv III (21:17)
Panty Droppin’ Pop, Good Poker, Try to Confuse Jaco, NYE All Over Again, Umphrey’s McGeeLand Theme Song, Funky Neil Diamond, 1st Song You’ll Play When You Headline Red Rocks, Brendan Imitating Jake’s Style of Playing, Song For the 11 Chicks Here!, Joelless in Flagstaff Reprise, Twiser Reprise, How You Feel After Eating At Waffle House, Riders On the Snow Storm, Acapella, Summercamp Preview

01.23.10 | Fillmore Auditorium | Main Show

Walking up to the Fillmore on Saturday night it was surprising to see such a large crowd gathered outside, especially considering that Aspen’s Belly Up was so intimate. Overnight, Umphrey’s McGee had gone from playing the smallest venue of the tour to the largest. The Fillmore’s archaic will call area needs improvement and the large, slow line caused many to miss Cornmeal, if not some of the beginning of Umphrey’s McGee’s opener “Turn and Dub.” This song debuted on New Year’s Eve and is a reworking of the Mantis tune “Turn and Run” that the band collaborated on with Easy Star All-Stars‘ Michael G. The new rendition has a fresh, dub-like perspective and it really showcases how much more comfortable the band has gotten with the Mantis material.

Umphrey’s McGee :: 01.23 :: Denver by Woodside

The band then followed with a free-for-all “1348″ that had bassist Ryan Stasik going deeper, darker and harder through a “Jimmy Stewart” that bounced back and forth between dance beat and metal rock. Transitioning into “Bridgeless” and then back to “1348″ set an improv-heavy tone that saw the band going in and out of songs all night long. Cornmeal’s Allie Kral came out for the second time this tour, closing the set as she joined the band for an energetic take on The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” a song the band has had a lot of fun with over the last few years.

The band returned for a second set that opened with two of the most high-energy songs in the Umphrey’s catalogue, “Wizard Burial Ground” > “Wappy Sprayberry.” The former took on a sludge rock feel with duel-shredding guitars and frantic double-bass rolls by drummer Kris Meyers, while “Wappy” had Stasik again thumping bass-heavy dance beats. “Tinkles” and “Got Your Milk” kept things rocking and the band again revisited “Nemo’s Fat Bottomed Good Times,” the Queen/Led Zeppelin mash-up that debuted at this year’s Halloween show at Las Tortugas.

As the band returned for the encore, they thanked the audience, citing this was the largest Colorado crowd they had ever played to. The fun loving “Partyin’ Peeps” then started up and was followed by a version of Snoop Dogg’s “Ain’t No Fun” that saw the usually shy Andy Farag (percussion) with a mic in one hand and a liter of Grey Goose in the other. As the crowd sang along with the raunchy lyrics, former lighting director Adam Budney took the stage as DJ Pumpernickel to chime in on the song’s final verse.

Walking off, Cinninger picked up a handmade sign that had made its way to the stage – a sign that summed up the weekend in two simple words – and he proudly displayed it to the crowd: “Fuck Yeah!”
