Storage Software Market Numbers Improve Slightly in Q3, IDC Reports

EMC, which led the external disk hardware market in the third quarter by a 2-to-1 ratio over No. 2 IBM, also led the overall storage software market with 23.4 percent revenue share in the same period, according to IDC. Symantec, with its Veritas storage software brand, claimed second position with 17.8 percent revenue share, and IBM was in third position with 12.2 percent, the research company says.

the worldwide storage software market basically mirrored the storage hardware
market by enduring another decline in year-over-year growth in the third

Google Nabs Teracent to Improve Display Ads

Google purchases display ad specialist Teracent for an undisclosed sum, showing the search engine is going after market share enjoyed by Yahoo and Microsoft. Teracent uses machine learning technology to pick and choose from thousands of creative elements in display ads, including images, products, messages and colors. Teracent might seem like a small purchase in the wake of Google’s $750 million bid for mobile display ad provider AdMob, but the deal underscores Google’s commitment to boosting its display ad market share.

US President Barack Obama congratulated Hamid Karzai on his re-election as President of Afghanistan and asked him to improve governance, besides eradicating corruption. Congratulating Karzai over telephone on his re-election on Tuesday, Obama told the Afghan leader that his administration needs to be more serious in its efforts to eradicate corruption. Later, Obama said that Karzai assured him that he understood the importance of the time of his re-election. “But as I indicated to him, the proof is not going to be in words, it is going to be in deeds,” Obama said. Informing reporters about his call with Karzai, Obama said at his Oval Office, “I spoke with President Karzai and I congratulated him on his election for the second term as President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.” Although the process was messy, the US President said he was pleased with the final outcome as it was in accordance with Afghan law. This, according to him, was important not only for the international community that has invested so much in Afghan success, but most importantly, is important for the Afghans that the results were in accordance with and followed the rules laid down by the country’s constitution. “I did emphasize to President Karzai that the American people and the international community as a whole want to continue to partner with him and his government in achieving prosperity and security in Afghanistan,” Obama said.

IBM Preps New DB2 Feature to Improve Performance for Power Systems

IBM has developed new software called DB2pureScale for IBM Power Systems with the intent of increasing database transaction capacity while cutting costs and risks faced by businesses with growing systems. Changes To Listing Rules To Improve Market Efficiency

SHORTER trading halts and prompt disclosures of information relating to
employee share options are some of the key changes in listing rules
announced by Singapore Exchange (SGX) yesterday, in its bid to improve
market efficiency and transparency.

The revisions, following a public consultation in May, will take effect
from Dec 3.

Said Ms Yeo Lian Sim, SGX’s senior executive vice-president and head of
risk management and regulation: “These listing rule changes will not only
improve market efficiency and shorten trading halts, it will also add
clarity and promote accountability of listed companies.”

SGX said it would be shortening trading halts to a minimum 30 minutes,
instead of the current 60 minutes, to “minimise market disruption”, citing
“increasing familiarity with market practices and wider availability of
information”.

But Mr David Gerald, president of the Securities Investors Association of
Singapore, said the shorter minimum trading halt would make it harder for
retail investors to make informed decisions.

They would have to monitor the information more carefully, he added.

On employee stock options, SGX wants issuers to announce promptly each
grant of options as well as other information such as the date of grant,
the exercise price and the number of options granted to directors,
controlling shareholders and associates.
