Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Apps Include Twitter, Netflix, OpenTable
Microsoft is pinning its smartphone-market hopes on Windows Phone 7, its competitor to the Apple iPhone and the growing family of Google Android devices. A vital part of the companys Windows Phone 7 strategy centers on mobile applications. As other smartphone platforms have demonstrated in recent years, a robust app library greatly influences users& Apple’s App Store and its hundreds of thousands of apps are frequently cited as a key draw, while Palms lack of apps is just as often blamed for that platforms failure to build a market presence. Taking no chances, Microsoft is preparing to launch Windows Phone 7 with apps from prominent brands already in place. Those brands include Netflix, Twitter, OpenTable and LucasArts’ "Star Wars." As time goes on, however, Microsoft also hopes that smaller third-party developers will gravitate toward Windows Phone 7 as their platform of choice for building and selling apps. Throughout the summer, Microsoft has been encouraging developers to think about ways to port both games and productivity applications onto Windows Phone 7, even offering a series of online tutorials. – …
ViewSonic Android Tablets Include ViewPad 7, ViewPad 10 with Windows 7
Consumer electronics gadget maker ViewSonic Nov. 1 introduced two tablets geared to challenge existing offerings such as the 9.7-inch Apple iPad and 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. ViewPad 7 offers consumers a 3.5G-capable machine with an 800-by-480 WVGA LCD screen. ViewPad 10 strikes at the iPad, as it is a 10.1-inch touch-screen tablet with a unique value proposition: It is configured to run both Android and Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium. Curiously, while the ViewPad 7 runs Android 2.2, the most current build available, ViewPad 10 runs the rather ancient Android 1.6. That means there will be some application limitations. Presumably, the availability of Windows 7 on that tablet is meant to offset the issue. The ViewPad 7 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2010 for $479, more than $100 less than the $599 Galaxy Tab on Verizon Wireless. The ViewPad 10 won’t ship until the first quarter of 2011, costing $629, or the base price of the iPad WiFi+3G models sold by AT&T and now Verizon Wireless. Both devices will face tough competition from Samsung, whose Galaxy Tab pricing on Sprint and T-Mobile is questionable, costing more than $1,000 over the terms of their contracts, and the iPad, which has shipped millions of units already. – …
