STI increases 0.5% to 2,903.65 at 10 a.m.

Singapore’s Straits Times Index increased 0.5% to 2,903.65 as of 10 a.m. local time. Three stocks gained for each that fell on the 30-member gauge.

Shares on the measure trade at 15.2 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.5 times at the start of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

Singapore’s Straits Times Index increased 1.6% to 2,834.57 at the close, its highest close since Jan. 21. Six stocks gained for each that fell on the 30-member gauge.
 
Shares on the measure trade at 14.9 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.5 times at the start of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market. 
 
Shipping companies: The Baltic Dry Index, which measures the cost of shipping commodities, rose 3.9% in London on March 5, taking a seven-day climb to 20%.

Singapore’s Straits Times Index increased 1.3% to 2,825.62 as of the 12:30 p.m. trading break, set for its highest close since Jan. 21. Almost five stocks gained for each that fell on the 30-member gauge.

Shares on the measure trade at 14.9 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.5 times at the start of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market. 

Shipping companies: The Baltic Dry Index, which measures the cost of shipping commodities, rose 3.9% in London on March 5, taking a seven-day climb to 20%.

Apple’s HTC Lawsuit Comes as Android Adoption Increases

Apple has filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against HTC, one of the primary manufacturers of smartphones that run Google Android. If Apple succeeds in what could be a protracted lawsuit, it could temporarily dampen the Android-equipped devices in the U.S. market at a time when some data shows Android enjoying an increasing rate of adoption among consumers. Apple has other lawsuits in play against Nokia, and is being sued by Kodak, over other patent-related issues.

Avaya Adoption of Nortel Data Products Increases Competition with Cisco

Transcu increases shareholding in Biomass Energy Corporation to 72.5%

Transcu Group says wholly-owned subsidiary, TTI-ellebeau, Inc. (TTIE) has converted its JPY60 million ($0.93 million) loan to Biomass Energy Corporation (BME), a Japanese gasification technology company, into 1,200 shares representing 50% of the issued share capital of BME.

Following the loan conversion, Transcu’s total indirect interest in BME increases to 72.5%, making BME an indirect subsidiary of Transcu. Prior to the loan conversion, Transcu held 45% of BME through Transcu Green Tech Pte (TGT).
