South Sudan votes for independence

Some 99 percent of South Sudanese voted to secede from the north, according to the first complete results of the region’s independence referendum.

A total of 99.57 percent of those polled voted for independence, according to the referendum commission.

Unknown group in north “wants independence”

Radio KiM from ÄŒaglavica in Kosovo on Wednesday publicized parts of a document titled, “Declaration of Independence of Certain Kosovo Municipalities”. According to the radio, this came from an until now unknown organization, said to be called “the Alliance of Municipalities of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija”, Beta reports.

Daily: Sucess in stopping new recognitions

Daily Danas writes that Serbia’s diplomatic efforts to stop further recognitions of Kosovo’s independence have been successful thus far. About three weeks after the International Court of Justice gave its opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s proclaimed independence, there have been no new recognitions.

Bosnian PM: Kosovo challenge for RS

Bosnia-Herzegovina Prime Minister Nikola Špirić said that the confirmation of Kosovo’s independence by the UN could cause a reaction by the Republic of Srpska. He said that with a confirmation of Kosovo’s independence, the UN would “make the first move towards the road to independence for the Republic of Srpska (RS) and many other states that want independence.”

India won’t recognize Kosovo

India would not be recognizing Kosovo’s independence upon the opinion on Kosovo’s unilateral proclamation given by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). “We are analyzing the ICJ’s opinion on Kosovo. Our stance on the unilateral Kosovo independence declaration has not changed,” spokesperson for the Indian Foreign Ministry Vishnu Prakash.

Thaci “against supervised independence”

Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci said, after an extended visit to the U.S., that he wants the “supervised independence of Kosovo” to end.
“I am happy that out American and European partners said that the supervised independence of Kosovo is being successfully concluded,” Thaci said, adding to local Albanian language media in Priština.

Spain in fresh Kosovo statement

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said that Spain would continue to oppose the independence of Kosovo. “We will continue to support dialogue and a compromise between the two sides,” she said after the International Court of Justice gave its opinion on Kosovo Albanians’ unilaterally proclaimed independence.

“UN to give political interpretation of ruling”

In the wake of ICJ’s Kosovo case ruling, Serbian President Boris Tadić has announced a “clear plan of diplomatic activities”. The top UN court said in its advisory opinion on Thursday that the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence, which Serbia rejects as illegal, did not violate international law, “since there is no active provision that limits independence declarations”, but would not rule on the right to self-determination or secession.

China reaffirms support over Kosovo

Beijing announced today that it will continue to respect Serbia’s territorial integrity, and that it believes there is still room for new Kosovo status talks. The Chinese reaction came one day after the International Court of Justice ruled that the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence did not breach international law, as there was “no active provision that limits independence declarations”.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) today announced its advisory opinion on the legality of the Kosovo’s unilateral independence proclamation. “International law does not have an active provision that limits independence declarations, therefore Kosovo’s declaration of independence is not in breach of international law,” the court president, Hisashi Owada of Japan, said.

U.S. VP: Independence is irreversible

U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden said that “Kosovo’s independence is irreversible” and that economic progress and integration progress await Kosovo. After meeting with Kosovo Albanian Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, Biden said that the American administration holds the Kosovo government’s orientation towards implementing the rule of law in high regards.

PM: Kosovo not condition for EU integration
